Are you taking a beating on selling a used bike or adding to the collection

With 25’s coming, some already on the floor, along all the discussions we’ve had on new bikes.  Though I’d throw out opinions on selling, trading or adding to your collection.  Dirt bikes cost more than ever, used market has normalized for lack of better terms.  Maybe even tanked due to many new bikes sales needing to be financed.  My observation right or wrong appears we have a really large division between new prices and used value.

In my case I’m not sure I’m willing to taking the current beating required to flip a bike.  Wouldn’t change my life style if I did take a beating.  Buying at 9-10k and selling 12 to 18 months later at 5500-6000k isn’t exactly good money.  I’m thinking I’ll add to my collection.  My wife will have to get used to it lol.  I see 23 Hondas like mine  with a handful of hours in the 6k-7k range on Facebook, which probably won’t sell at that.  I bet dealer trade in would really be in the tank, but some do trade.

I think I’ll throw a Luxon triple clamp on my Honda, hang on to it  ride it.  Maybe look for a deal later in the year or next.  With all the updates and changes for 25 might be a good time to set back and wait to see how it falls out.

Comments please, Thanks Billy

Adding to the collection, lol.

For me, the quality of people showing up to buy your stuff is what scares me.

Thinking you can recoup any money with a used bike is wet dreaming. Enjoy what you have and when you are done with it sell it without looking back and move on to the next adventure. It's just the way it is with any thing you buy with disposable income.

That’s a valid point.  My last bike I flipped I took to the dealership and let them sell on consignment for the very reason you mentioned.  You meet a guy in Houston to sell a scooter, best meet in Cop shop parking lot.

Nail on the head.

Sold some stuff this week, literally had NO OFFERS, NO SWAPS in the advert in caps because I don't care if it puts people off and they don't get in touch... Good.

Still half the messages were about swaps (for dumb or broken shit nobody has any need for) or lowball offers. Then they're emotional when you don't reply 😂

I still can't bring myself to buy new motocross bikes these days, spoilt for choice with barely used options.

Just hanging onto a old CR. Continual maintenance, few  upgrades and, been nothing but happy not paying 10K+ to do the same thing in the woods I’ve always done.

Just adding to the collection lol. Selling bikes privately is a pain in the ass! And I definitely like having a couple of bikes set up differently.

I’d have taken the box of fireworks.  The way people shoot off fireworks in my hood, they are fireworks crazy come 4 of July.  About 10:30 on the night of the forth after the drinks kick in and they run out of fireworks.  I could trade that box of fireworks for a late model Corvette!

There is also the factor of if you NEED a new bike. I do not race any longer, and as a professional practice rider (and 66 yo), I found the new KTM frames, pre 2025, were not as comfortable as my 2019 frame. Found a 2023 GasGas MC350 roller on eBay for 4K, transferred my 2019 Husqvarna 350 engine, exhaust and wiring harness and suspension, sold all the GasGas and Husqvarna parts I did not use and added a few updates, new wheels, graphics and Ohlins and for not very much money, I had basically a new bike that was perfectly setup from the minute I started riding it.

Yes, it sucks selling anything, parts as well as bikes due to the completely moronic buyers out there. But, I am retired and it is like a hobby. Not as fun as it used to be, but it keeps me in new parts and the wife happy I spend hobby money to pay for hobby parts.

Now, if you race and practice every week, your bike is more than likely worn out, and a new bike is in order.

The OP sounds like he should do a refresh and wait a year to see how the new Hondas shake out.

Bought a 23 350 sxf with 10 hours on it to save the 3k new difference.
Sold my last 350 to a goon, and so far he’s looped it out, buddy wrecked it, and he’s banged it up a bit. bike is a mess. I wish I had just kept it.  got slightly lower than  what I was asking for, but damn. Sucks seeing something I took great care of getting trashed.

This weekend traded a 19 450 sxf, i bought in 2020 for 9500 otd, only 67 hrs and great shape got 5k, bought a new 24 FC 350 for 10k otd. Probably not the best deal ever,  but good enough for me.

Sounds like you did ok.  5k trade for a 19 doesn’t sound bad to me.  I’d guess 10k OTD for an Austrian is about average.

With dirtbikes anyway, most always you will lose money. So I always say, buy high, sell low and rather than count the $$ lost, count the smiles gained because every hour you ride it is a blast!!

Sounds like the goon will get a lot less than he paid for it.

I've always been stoked if my used bike gave me a good half or so down on a new one. Then finance the rest and get some installment credit for my score at $75 a month or so. Up until 3 or so years ago you never made money selling bikes, and that worked better for the ecosystem of dirt bikes in my un-educated opinion.

Last year I sold a 21' KX450 for $5000, it was very clean but Kawi's suck for resale. I'm glad I sold it when I did before they offered the crazy rebates on new bikes. I bought a 22' CRF450 with about 20 hours on it, also very clean for $6200. I felt I did good on this buy. Also bought a clean 03' CR250 to add to the stable for $3000.

I'd rather watch my dirt bikes rot then deal with someone trying to haggle.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don't buy used very often. I find it easier to walk into a store/dealership and get what I want vs. dealing with people.

Keep your 23 the 4-st new stuff is just gimmick marketing stuff. Not many going racing this yr except for Ltm in iL. . Millville last race didn’t hv 29-34 in the 125 class they had 10.  Wi. Av is down to 14-16 except for Aztalan near full gates.  Freight is scary bad a lot of corruption, theft , 50k + bankruptcies every week. Chicago & northern Indiana built 400 acre lots for the semi trucks to sit. From bankrupt co.s a million times worse than it was in 2008.  Yz125 & cr125,s r bringing good money yet. And that’s about it.

Whats the current market value of a 2002 CR 250 that still has original chain/sprocket?  I bought it 2 years ago and it has just been sitting in my garage.image-20240613141804-1image-20240613141816-2image-20240613141830-3image-20240613141852-4

Why are you still 1099ing it with the WVM? Market is tough for drivers, but that scene is usually  SAP paradise. Gotta be better opportunities out there

Sitting isn't really a good thing always, probably 2-2500 in WA
