On Pulp they were talking about a particular rider that was spinning up and angling off the grate to miss the rut on the start. They wouldn’t divulge into who it was but it seemed like everyone on the show knew who it was. Any guesses on who the factory rider was? Sounds like more than a few people weren’t happy about it.

After he gave the hint about the rider being aggressive I just assumed it was barcia.
Webb
It must have worked out either by the rider or the riders on either side as I don't remember any carnage right out of the gate.
The fix if you're the rider besides someone known to do that is to be sure to beat them out of the gate, it's that simple.
It sounds like it happens frequently. Not just a one time deal.

Sounds like a rider navigating the obstacles placed in front of him. Blows my mind people get mad about this.
This is a good snapshot of motocross journalism. The only 2 sports I follow religiously are motocross and Formula 1. If this happened in F1 it would have been spotted + submitted to the stewards and discussed in real time on the worldwide broadcast. Sometimes they make a decision during the race, sometimes they note the incident and review after the race. But this is all public info. The fact that people are dancing around naming names on a PODCAST is utterly absurd.
If this isn’t against the rules and said rider is using a loophole to their advantage, then all power to them. Wouldn’t want to be lining up beside them though.
Agree not naming the rider is ridiculous.
Is that how tomac pulled that massive holeshot when every gate had a huge hole just out of the gate in the ruts?
Yeah, the guy did something questionable in full view and they won’t say who it was…
Is this actually against the rules or no?
Haven't listened yet so it may or may not be the exact incidence they were referring to on the pod, but JT$ did an on-track report after Philadelphia about Webb doing this and then they showed the actual footage of it.
Starts at 13:52:
I thought I heard it was but I can’t say where or when I read it.
Edit: ando beat me to it. Good work.
This isn't new....
Leaning your bike after the gate drops to avoid the rut is not against the rules...lining your bike up at an angle to avoid the rut is...Webb did the former...
Side note - watch Jett’s front tire - doesn’t touch the ground until they are 3/4 toward the turn.
Thanks SPYGUY! They had to have been talking about Webb. I wonder why they didn’t want to mention his name on the podcast but JT mentioned his name on a piece for NBC. Weird.
They were talking about Barcia....
Pit Row
Yes, they very well may be talking on the pod about a different rider/incident altogether.
I can't see anything wrong with what Webb did.
That leg block by Barcia! Haha
Looking at the video again Webb doesn’t look to be angled. Maybe he just got out of it just with his lean. Maybe they were talking about Barcia? I’m going to watch for it now.
That rule is lame because technically every start is at an angle. You will never have a perfectly straight start that's exactly at 0.0 degrees...
Just ditch the stupid metal grates, holeshot devices, traction control, and starting blocks already. Put some skill back into the starts.
Wasn't there a picture earlier this year of Justin Cooper lined up way off center on the grate and at an angle? Pretty sure it was a star guy if not him.
This should be easy enough to police if people actually care.
On the show they were saying the officials will have guys straighten up if they notice early. But this particular rider was spinning up seconds before gate drop and getting crooked. Seems kinda risky. If you get too far off and your wheel drops off the side you’re kinda screwed.
We were referring to a rider that other riders mention quite a bit. It's purely rumor on that part so I didn't want to blow someone out without any real proof. Webb was clearly not who we were referring to as we literally did a whole piece on it for the SMX Post Show and SupercrossLive instagram (posted above). This isn't a new dynamic but it's becoming more and more of a talking point. The AMA is constantly policing it. I think it's a bigger issue this season as the ruts on the other side of the gate have been worse than usual with the inclement weather.

Knowing who it is, have you looked back at their starts to see if you can confirm it? Tell me who it is and I'll look lol
Great piece btw!
Seems like you should be able to do whatever as long as you are behind your gate🤷🏼♂️ I’ve never tried launching at an angle, I’d probably cross rut and crash lol
If they want to keep the start grates, make them narrower. An 8” wide, full length strip would force the riders into a launch “lane”. But it’d be better to just eliminate the steel and switch to concrete or dirt.
