Finally puts to rest that it was not Eli’s shock that was smoking earlier this year.
Did he have a mechanical that caused his crash and death?
The video the OP posted really shows how the shock was nothing but a spring at that point. It completely showed the wheel compressing and rebounding multiple times even though the wheel was about 4’ off the ground during the endo. The fact that he adjusted (and how quickly) to make it as far in as he did on that pogo stick was amazing.
Glad he sounds like he escaped major injury, that was ugly.
If KR94 has no major injuries from this….dude is made of rubber! Usually when your leg takes the brunt of impact, like his did, the ACL explodes….who knows… maybe he does not even have ACL”s at this point in his career…sucks… he was riding great. How these guys maintain their confidence is beyond me…who does his suspension?

This is an illustration of how a shock would work around the rest of the track if it were actually rebound assisting in a seat bounce.
I think it’s active ride.
Man that sucked to see, his first laps are just incredible. I wish I could see a compilation of his first laps footage. His teams are sitting on a goldmine.
Was this an air spring shock like Dungeys KTM? I know there was experimenting with air suspension around that time. Or was it a broken mount or actual shock failure?
Hope it's not as bad as it looked for Kenny.
Can see the circlip from the shock in this picture MXA posted
Here's what I know:
It's a picture of Mike "Too Tall" Bell standing next to his broke Yamahauler. 😉
That's not baby powder! 😯
Ricky Carmichael during the broadcasts has mentioned a shock malfunction a few times this year when he saw smoke/steam from a bike during a race.
I don’t recall him or other announcers saying this prior to this year.
Has he seen a trend in research and development with Triumph that made him comment on this during broadcasts?
Nuts to think such a small part is responsible to manage so much.
RC is a face for triumph. I doubt he did much testing for them. He’s mentioned shock failure two maybe 3 times and he was only right about 1 of them.
It's called the Jesus clip
I don't recall there ever being a shock failure that caused smoke or anything close to this and I have been riding/watching for more than 30 years. RC calling Eli's shock at Daytona was comical, but this one appears to actually be the shock., I hope we hear more details, but we all know we won't.....just like a rock hit Sexton's throttle body lol.
I agree, no way the shock itself would produce that kind of smoke but i suppose the perfect storm of spraying oil on hot exhaust could. Freak failure. Sucks for Kenny, the guy is ripping.
Pit Row
Vintage bike..... You never cease to prove how utterly clueless you are.
Sounds like the shock literally blew up. Will have to see the prognosis on the knee/ankle.
I mean all these guys are tough as hell and on amazing training regiments, but this statement is not particularly true. He definitely could have a torn ACL for sure. But they’re typically torn with sudden movements to the knee. Often in our sport by planting your foot in the ground. Foot goes one way and the rest of the body goes the other. Usually an impact like he took does not result in a torn ACL. But it is definitely not impossible.
I had a shock blow up all at once like that. Covered the whole bottom half of my bike in oil. Of course I don’t get my bike as hot as Kenny’s so it didn’t burn.
That has zero to do with HEP. Come back stronger posting
Had a shock shaft completely break at the bottom once. Just snapped. Sure hope Kenny comes back quickly. He was putting it to Jett. That was amazing to see.
Imagine if his oil didn’t gush out fast like it did and he made it through those whoops without any problem, only to be oil free by the time he hit the first rhythm section. As bad as it was it turned out alright.
Pumped Roczen should be relatively good after that crazy ride. He was riding well
W the actual F…?
So, is this caused by the shock bottoming out so hard that the shock body fails?
Better bottoming bumpers?
Stronger shock bodies?
Rider Ejection system compete with ejector seat and parachute?
Happened on my 1985 500CR and dislocated my shoulder when I landed.
I have been thinking about this since the 1st time it happened.
Is the shock body they are using 2 pieces that bolt together? Blown Oring?
Strangely enough, McElrath’s shock blew up at Nashville last year.
