Ping posted an Instagram poll asking who used earplugs when riding. I was surprised how many people said yes and they would never ride without them. Ping also said just about every pro uses them. Anyone in here use them and can tell me what it does for you
I would like to try them because I absolutely hate the sound of my yz 250f!
I use them 100% of the time. Once you’re used to it you’ll never go back
I use them. Started while riding my street bike to reduce wind noise and then started using during MX. To me the bike feels smoother, it suppresses a lot of the outside noises. I don’t use anything fancy just the disposable ones they give you at work. Give them a try, don’t like them just don’t use them next time out.
I says this exact sentiment from so many people. Just regular ole earplugs like you would use on a jobsite?

Yeah that was my question. What kind of earplugs. Thanks!
Yep. Just whatever is comfortable and pop them in. I use the foam ones
I love them and riding without them feels chaotic. It suppresses a lot of the "noise" and helps to keep me calm and the heart rate lower. I'm ADHD and they're somewhat soothing and allow me to concentrate better.
I'm struck by how many people swear by them. My next ride I'm trying it out
I couldn't believe how much they helped... stock 23 sxf450 is ridiculously loud and distracting when high in the revs... Best mod on that bike was ear plugs. Next best mod was quiteter pipe
Can barely ride without them. Ears ring for a whole day if I don't wear them.
I think you'll enjoy riding more and certainly protect your hearing.
When I'm racing I wear orange foam earplugs 100% of the time. I keep a baggie of them in my gear-bag.
On practice days, I listen to music with earbuds and a cheap MP3 player.
I'm working in my CNC shop now, wearing the same little MP3 player and earbuds with a podcast on.
Often times I wear 3M ear muffs on top of the earbuds if I have any extra loud machining operations going on.
Wore them all the time road racing loud ass bikes and it was 100% necessary at those speeds.
I'm now a 2 stroke enduro guy mostly and I didn't feel a need until one day I tried it and Holy cow I can concentrate better and ride the gnarly stuff better.
So IMO it's a cheap mod that works.
Do yourself a favor and ALWAYS use them. You will be thankful you did when you are old and can still hear. The rest of us old guys are partially deaf now or worse from unmuffled expansion chambers in the ‘70’s.
Can't ride without them. Can concentrate and in an odd way actually hear things better.
I use EarPeace (the regular Moto model).
Appreciate all the input guys.
I never used them until I started road racing. The wind noise at speed annihilates your ears. Even in supermoto ears hurt if you forget ear plugs.
I think if I had used ear plugs in all the years of motocross I'd have a bit less hearing issues.
I've ridden with ear plugs since 2005.
when I am behind some 450 with an aftermarket muffler that needs re-packing ( they need it every 6 to 10 hours), it's painful without ear protection...
I wear them religiously at work, hi fidelity ones while playing live music, and tried them on race day once and couldn't take them out fast enough. Don't know what it was, but I suddenly couldn't ride. I'll have to give them another shot on a practice day.
Pit Row
^ This, when I first started wearing them I actually felt like I was faster. Obviously not, but I’ll take whatever I can get.
All the time... Street, dirt, flying in air planes, concerts. You only get two ear drums, protect them whenever you can.
Another guy that started using them when I road raced and I will never go back. I'm shocked more people don't run them. I just buy like a 50 pack and keep them in my gear bag so I always have a fresh set.
Yes. Takes a few rides to get used to them. I have a screaming 125, just makes things quieter.
I’ll never attend live music or ride without them. Hearing is a beautiful thing, don’t fuck it up
I race XC for the most part and was hesitant to wear them because I didn’t think That I could hear the other riders, but I tried it and loved it.
I can hear the other riders and it seems to calm things down for me while I’m riding.
I wish someone long ago had instructed me on hearing protection.
As a result, the ears aren't so good - and I developed tinnitus due to noise exposure. Listen to these tinnitus frequencies that NEVER STOP in your head:

To avoid this ^^^, order these:

I keep several pairs in my work bag, backpacks/Camelbaks, in the garage toolboxes, in the my truck, my car, my nightstand, etc. --- HAVE THEM READY WHERE YOU NEED THEM AND USE THEM - YOU'LL BE SO GLAD YOU DID!
Lastly, I honestly like riding better with earplugs in. I can focus better and get into "the zone." Win-win-win.
I tried them once in AX and hated it, couldnt hear where other riders were behind me, so never knew if was about to get landed on or block passed. I need to try them outdoors.
I started using them about 3 years ago & wont ever go back!
Yet another here. And my CR isn't even that loud, certainly not compared to the superbike at speed.
I'm closing in on 20 years in the Army in June, spent a year as a door gunner on Black Hawks and was a around 3.2 MW diesel power plants since 2008. Always wore double hearing protection, but still have tinnitus pretty bad. I totally agree with using hearing protection at concerts and for riding.
Orange foam ear plugs at CVS $10.
Ear plugs reduce the noise, calms the brain, slows things down a bit, and allows you to think and ride much better.
