Fun topic.

Overall, the feeling of loading up in the morning with a full day to myself…road tripping to a practice track..with a cup of coffee as I drive. Can’t beat that.

Riding wise, I really enjoy the feeling of progression. You work on a certain technique or a specific corner & finally nail it. Good shit.

Also, there’s no better feeling than railing a corner wide open on a 2 stroke.

I enjoy everything except working on my bikes, my kids bikes, and their friends bikes. I'm a little obsessive about maintenance, even though I don't like it

I’m 43 and still trying to go as fast as I can.  As much as I try, I just can’t get myself to just cruise around.

Im a desert guy…and there is just something about going as fast as I can without knowing what is around the corner/bush/rock/hill…it’s an entirely different experience than anything else I’ve felt on two wheels.

I also still love working on technique and improving my riding that way…At my age I ain’t getting any faster, that’s for sure…so making my riding more efficient through proper technique is still a way to feel like I’m making gains even though I’m not going any faster…

I still get out to a few races (hare and hounds, Hare Scrambles, GP's, Enduro's) a year...though less and less with each passing year...fortunately I still have a ton of fun pushing myself on the trails....

Man that’s a good question.
Mx is my life.   Family & friends are intertwined in Mx.  My wife loves everything about it , my daughter is a huge fan and my son and I ride/race as much as possible . My lifelong friends are all from Moto.  I’m very lucky for my side gig I get to deal with some of the top people / places of Mx.

The end of the day at the track when no one is in a hurry to leave , few Coors , kids being kids and some ball busting with some friends is tough to beat.

I love everything about Moto and hope to never stop.   I hope my son will always ride with me and one day be faster than me.  I hope my daughter (13) will always be fan.

I'm 62.  I think desert single/double-track is my overall favorite riding, but I like everything.  I like sand whoops, I like twisty trees, I like rough double track.  On the MX track, I work on turns and general bike control.  I'll do the jumps, but as safely as I can.  The only thing I really dislike is hard enduro.  I'm too short and I don't like to beat my bike to death.  I still race enduros so a lot of my riding is enduro-prep.

Just throwing a leg over my bike is my enjoyment. Forgetting  about  everything while smiling under my helmet.

Not sure at the moment, tracks around here immediately turn into peg deep, slot car tracks nowadays, even regular practice days.

I'm 67, so I'm like alphado, just happy I can still ride. And a still love riding a track although my pace has slowed considerably over the last 10 years. My body lets me down sometimes as when you get older you don't have to do anything to get injuries. Sometimes you wake up with injuries and don't know how you got them. I still love riding my dirt bikes and have been since the late 60s. I know I'm getting close to the end of it and I think about it a lot but I don't like it. I wish I could ride for another 60 years.

Where it started.

Same here…from riding my ADV to racing in Baja or hanging at Day In The Dirt with really good friends…

Riding in my 60s keeps me stoked.

Im 60, 4 months into knee replacement, my riding joy? Sits parked in the garage, just getting back on the MTB, and hitting small jumps and drops, hope to ride the MX track this summer. Not any fun trails in Fl, my opinion. Prefer Durhamtown over Croom.

Even with this moto forum being racing specific. Where does your enjoyment of riding sit?

Meaning are you trying to ride as fast as humanly possible for yourself?

Do you prefer to freeride out in the mountains or deserts at your own pace?

Do you only care for jumping?

Do you only care for railing turns?

Dont care if you're slow or fast and just want to ride around on the bike at your pace and everybody else can back off?

Working on the motors?

Working on the suspension?

or even all of it?

So my question to all of vital is, what part of moto do you enjoy the most?

Im curious as to what people have to say, that is why im not including a poll. Bust out your typing skills.

Love to ride!

80% enduro sessions no racing trying to still keep a good pace. (For me).

20% vet moto track enjoying it.

Don't like wrench on my bikes at 45 as much as i liked it at 20

Gate drops.

Now mostly Vet/Evo MX and a couple of modern races , and 2 or 3 Supermoto Races.

Will ride maybe 2 or 3 times preseason to get back into it, at any tracks that are open, and then just races.

Did around 15 race days last year, will be the same this year, maybe a couple more.

I cant get enthusiastic to just ride.

Age 12 to 30- Riding in the hills and camping / desert riding with friends

Age 30-62-  Racing as many weekends as I could in addition to camping / desert riding.

age 62 to now (65) -Now I'm also in the just happy to be able to ride club.  Still doing a lot of camping / riding and now we've added dual sporting into the mix as well. We like to do road trips and use the dual sports to go exploring. Racing is still my favorite kind of riding but the last crash took a lot out of the family as well as me. Physically, financially and emotionally the risk vs reward racing motocross has kind of faded. It's cool I had a good run and got out relatively unscathed. I gots some trophys and shit I'm good Laughing

Lately the emtb is my go to ride. We go 3-4 days a week after work, I've some ex moto buddies we ride with and lots of different places to go.

59, totally a never-was level of rider/racer. Just being able to still ride and occasionally race is where I’m at and it’s great with me! I consciously slow down a tic every year, hoping to make another 10-15 years before hanging up my boots.

Just the pure thrill of twisting a throttle and going.  Made my soul smile the first ride and still does to this day.

I got into riding to trail ride with friends.

But then my incorrigible competitiveness got involved, and now I don't ride for fun: all I do is train and compete.  I'm obsessed with accomplishing certain competitive goals before I get too old.  It's taken the "fun" out of riding and replaced it with a passion that's rewarding in a different way.

My hope is that I can "peak" at a level I'll be proud of, and that on the downhill slope of that journey I can get back to riding for pleasure, maybe coach or get involved with organizing events, etc.  I'm looking forward to that as a reward for sidelining the fun and working hard now.

(For perspective, I'm a 30-year-old with a full-time job, and this will always just be a hobby, regardless of the level I get to.)

Cool topic - enjoying the responses!

This is a great topic, and one I've thought about as I get older (51) and continue to enjoy this sport. When I break it down, for me motocross is actually several different hobbies all under the same banner:

1) Riding- Working on technique, watching the kids and trying to continue to evolve my style. Like some of you have mentioned, I seem to get more satisfaction from getting a turn right than doing jumps nowadays. I don't love the jumps any less though but my risk versus reward meter is definitely recalibrating as I age. And on those days when you get that flow and feel like you can just keep going and going...quite possibly the strongest drug on the planet.

2) Racing - For me this comes in two flavors, modern racing when I want to ride my limits and vintage when I want to jackass around on old bikes and just have fun. As I get older I'm tending to alternate years as to which one I focus on, but I think the older I get, the more I'll skew toward the vintage side. But riding without racing... just feels hollow to me.

3) Wrenching / Setup - Probably my least favorite part, but you gotta pay to play and I do most of my own work. This one is most rewarding on the vintage side, when I take a turdball zombie bike and bring it back to competitive standards.

4) Following Professional SX/MX - It's always odd to me when I meet people at the track and mention something about last night's race or last week's race and get sort of a deer in headlights look. I LOVE following the sport at the pro level. This is made even more cool by the small size of our sport, I know I bore my wife every broadcast with "I met him at a ride day" or "I raced with his dad back in the day" or "I bought my bike from his shop" (lookin at you, Brayton) or any other type of six degrees of separation. The level of connection that an everyday racer can have to all levels of moto is just insane.

5) My YouTube - No, I'm not begging for subscriptions! I put up GoPro of my races (vintage and modern), and occasionally do ride impression videos of old bikes when I have a chance to borrow one for a few laps. But here's something cool: it's entirely common for me to be at a practice or race and have folks come up to me and say "Hey, you're Mark!" and that they saw my videos because they were trying to learn more about what to expect at a certain track. So that's been really rewarding for me, I get to meet a lot of people and feel like I am contributing a little something back to my local scene. Last year a high school kid told me he watched my videos on his Chromebook in class when he was supposed to be doing work. Gotta love that!

6) Off the bike - And of course there's the whole training aspect. I don't do as much as I should, but it definitely takes some time and hopefully is contributing to me having a longer healtheir life as well.

So there ya go, at least six different hobbies for me wrapped up in this thing we call moto!

I like how you categorized everything. I never really looked at it in that way, but you broke it down in a way that makes you realize it’s a complete package type of sport. Pretty cool.

46 and I prefer to ride my ebike now, way less maintenance and admin to get everything ready and clean up. Moto has always been my passion, I'm still watching every supercross, motocross, bike review etc but just have way more fun send jumps and techy down hills on the ebike.

59 and still race just not quite as often.

i pick my spots. Try and hit Hangtown once a year with OTHG as one of them.

Practice days are just great fun and not as much of a time commitment.

I love riding at DT1 and there is a good group that show up most weekends.

Just bought a 26” bmx bike to start racing again at a nearby track.

zero plans on quitting.

Had blast building my SR and am already wondering what’s next?

I just ride to ride and enjoy myself. My days of trying to be the fastest is behind me. Plus I traded in my dirt bikes for a street bike. But I’m getting that itch for the dirt again because that is my first love.

I'm 31, I still want to go fast and race. I have a kid on the way so I'm not sure about racing in the future.

Pics from this afternoon’s ride. Nowhere near the adrenaline of moto but there is a skill set required and a penalty for effing up.

BD237104-C130-472E-BF7A-E42C358AE6E8.png?VersionId=Xa4lj0H6c 9RNYbJYIr1fi9u4EAD Currently my moto enjoyment sits out in the desert or mountains from 2 to 4 weeks at a time. My nickname became Caveman because I spend so much damn time out here 🤣. The crew I ride with have very goofy nicknames. Got bit hard by the off-road bug a few years back. Before that I was hitting practice track days real hard. Do an occasional desert race just to see if I can still go fast. Just hate to get up early in retirement 🤣…..Riding trip , family time at home for a few weeks , repeat. Since I can’t ride near my house anymore , I take my house to the riding areas 🤷‍♂️

63, Race some vintage MX, single track or trails in the mountains, ride a trial occassionally, just twisting the throttle when I get the chance.

One of the main things for me, is that when i put on my helmet, it takes me to a different world, which is the same world it took me to in 1974 , the first time i did it.

As others have said, it takes you away from the daily grind but for me its more than that , sitting in a holding area, waiting to go to the line, is the time i feel most alive, and when the board turns, you go into auto pilot and just go.  Now these days, as a Vet rider, while those days are a little more low key, getting to battle with guys having fun for the same reason never gets old.

And when you are at the track, age really is just a number, everything that makes you race, makes you the same as all the guys, irrespective of age.

When i get back to work after a weekend racing, and hear about the great coffee someone had at the Garden Store that you really gotta try, first thing Monday, i know that while they will never 'get it' .

So as i said, i have to be racing, i have buddies that ride trails and have great weekends away doing that , but it hasnt been something i ever wanted to do, seeing a guy with a $10k bike in a river with just the bars sticking out above the water , is a level of fun i can live without.

Whatever you ride, and wherever you do it , its all good, unless you are a wheelie boy, then you just flat suck.

All of my bike riding (moto and street) is shared with my son, and that's my favorite part of our 2 wheel hobby. We try to stuff each other on practice tracks, and drag race each other thru 3 gears at most stoplights.

Since I'm getting a lot slower it seems, I've really enjoyed just watching him improve more than riding myself. He's getting his first ride on his new Yamaha Saturday at Back 9, and it's all we've been talking about for weeks.

Love this sport...
