Given the way this season is going and the fact he's had the red plate for 2 rounds, do you think he can win this title through consistency ala Dungey ?

Me personally ? I think he can and hope he does. Go  AP Yee Ha !

Poll

Can AP take this thing all the way ?

I'm a no, but not for any of the reasons stated.

I think we are really understating what "Diesel consistency" was. It was podium or win every single round. Not top 5; Not top 7; All podiums (26 consecutive), mostly 1st or 2nd. It was maybe not textbook dominance, but as close as you can get to it without blowing the doors off the competition.

This is what a "Diesel" consistent red plate looked like through round four (and beyond):

Nope, everything so far has been unusual. Mud tracks, short mains (triple crown), first race jitters. The rest of the season will be much different. And just not sure AP will do as well going forward. Disclosure, he's one of my favorite riders.

I think Dunge took that diesel moniker as an insult… implying he won titles through consistency and not speed. You need both…. and if AP wins the title, it will be because he has both, not because he dieseled his way there.

If Tomac, Jett, Chase op Webb get's injured maybee he has a change

He has done well in two mud lotteries and has received a gift from Anderson's punishment and is now a champion candidate, come on, be realistic. AP7 is like an Barcia or Ferrandis etc. can achieve good results but are not consistent enough..

Everyone in the title fight, except for Jett, has figured out that Dungey's method is a winning approach. You don't have to win every race. You don't have to win by 30 seconds. You don't have to pass RIGHT NOW... It may not have made a lot of fans or been spectacular but, it cashed a bunch of checks.

Let’s see how he does at Detroit next. The dirt really worked for him last year. He was so much faster than everyone else. Will that be the case this year?

If he podiums again this week. Then look out.

Never  underestimate what someones first win does for them.   Look at Webb in 2019.

Personally, I equally want to see Tomac get that third he was robbed of.and Webb get his third before they retire.

Chase and AP have time.

Jett....well, we all know he's going to be racing for 20 years and have 153 SX wins....

No way. Especially not with this kind of field behind the gate.

Valid point for sure. I didn't know what RD's results were when I posted that. I started with Given the way this season is going... based on the results so far. With that many past champs and the "most stacked field"Tongue in awhile we have a bunch of guys who can win each week, including AP obviously lol. there's a lot that can happen. I'm not Kreskin but it's a safe bet the results are going to be all over the map somewhat. If he can stay "in it" week in and week out he'll be deep in it near the end. If not you can pull this back up and say haha sumdummy doesn't know his ass Laughing   Who's had the red plate more than him this year I forget ?

Go AP7 you got Detroit. Keep those toes pointed in Blink

Aaron has held the red plate 2x as long as anyone else this year. Why not?

Oh yeah, here's potentially why not: Cooper, Tomac, Sexton, Lawrence. Still, anything can happen.

People who have the impression that Dungey dieseled his way to titles need to take a look at the vault to see how he truly dominated everyone but RV.

Well if nothing else at least we have one thread about the points leader and were talking about racing. This place was starting to look like daytime TV.

He could diesel himself to his best points result of his 450 career maybe, but I just don't think there's any realistic way he can actually win a title against the current field.

The only way my mind could be changed is if he contends for podiums these next few rounds. If he falls back to 5ths, 6ths, and 7ths in the races leading up to Daytona, it isn't happening.

He could if he "Goldenrod's" it the rest of the way. Not so much if he "Diesel's" it.

I'm a no. I can't see anyone winning less than 3 races and winning the title.

Be a story for the ages and completely cement his legacy as a peoples champ and mx folk hero icon...but more than likely he won't, cheering for him all the way though.

Big difference is AP has the championship pedigree those guys don’t (Ramsey has 1)

Id say he has a 1in 6 chance which aint bad. Look what happened last year. Coop and eli went out and sexton inherited the title.  It could happen.

Lawrence in 2024. Why can't Plessinger win? A couple injuries, broke bikes, he is solid top five every round so far. Better than any else yet. He could do it, he is not going to get slower. Trouble is Tomac, Webb, and Sexton will get faster too..

I don’t think AP will be the champ, but I can see the champ this year with only 5 wins

And lighting strikes in the same place twice sometimes.  Chase inherited a 250 SX title when Forkner went out with a broken collarbone and a 450 title last year from Eli.  So I’m cheering for AP, even if it is only a 16.7% chance .

I was never RD's biggest fan but i absolute hate the narrative around him. You're 100% correct. He didn't diesel his way to anything, he won a lot.
