It’s probably more impressive since McGrath started racing dirt bikes in his mid teens not given a factory ride at 5 and training at a facility his entire life then showing up to the big leagues struggling to make mains and constantly getting hurt like some “prodigies” in our sport that where supposed to be the next big thing. He trained when he wanted to, took his factory bike out in the hills free riding filming badass moto movies those are things you’ll never see factory guys doing today.

Im glad someone posted this early. I was about to. The SX tracks of the 90's were brutal, especially on a 250. Even the AX tracks and the MX tracks all eventually wanted to copy SX layouts. Some brutal whoops and triples! I raced all of the 90's , into 2001. I hated hearing about fkn hondas and MC winning shit every damn week. But, he was the damn best, no question. Even though i still hate to admit it.
There's two problems with that take.
The first huge fatal flaw is that it assumes the MC who dropped in today did not grow up in the same current environment that people pretend would advantage current riders. You're basically saying that MC growing up now would never have worked as hard as the current guys and he would have just dribbled his talent away and never reached his potential.
The second flaw is that premise is nonsense. MC was an outdoor champion, and pretty sure when they still did two 40s. The 95 sweatbox national at Southwick is just a brutal, physical win by him.
Because an MC dropped in now would have grown up with those changes over time it's ridiculous to drop MC as he competed in the 90s into the current crop. The latter hypo is completely unreal and not creditable.

Pretty sure this guy's accomplishments are still relevant. No one will ever dethrone the King. Even with this beautiful Korean photoshop..
The other thing that stands out is that the "get hard" era of fitness really was triggered by RC probably losing his mind that he wasn't able to beat MC across a season his first two years in the premier class.

Or maybe even the KTM... I know that may be a stretch, but if it had a decent (or just any) linkage and the chassis was compliant to go along with the rocket motor, who knows.
Even with that bike, if he would have had an offseason with it, they'd have had a lot sorted.

This right here. I could be argued that Jeremy pushed Ricky to transform into the winning machine he became. Look at RCs 250sx results in '99 and 2000 vs 2001, he had to go find an edge to beat Jeremy.
im going to get absolutely roasted for this, but imagine when (if) it comes out that aldon was indeed pushing the special sauce to help pudgy wudgy freckle "get hard" to beat the king. the sport would turn inside out.
personally i think it's at least marginally more likely that this does happen at some point than we actually landed on the moon. for what that's worth. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
One reason the classes seem more stacked today is because you have several Supercross champions on the gate. It’s kind of hard to have multiple champions when one guy wins almost every title for almost a decade.

Hell dude the eighties gates were more stacked at times.
And RC didn't invent it. He just had a guy helping him with a more modern scientific approach to it. A lot of the best GP guys back in the seventies were animals. Hell, Brad Lackey went behind the friggin Iron Curtain as a teen and lived in a cabin in the boondocks in Czechoslavakia or one of those countries to learn how to train like them. In a sense Brad did what the Lawrences have done long long before they were born. Hannah much like RC later on figured out he had to get fitter than everybody else in order to win like he did. Then along came guys like Broc, David and Johnny O and RJ. Didn't Oshow race a supercross on Saturday and run a marathon on Sunday one time.
I've often heard that the real key to any "special sauce " isn't that it is necessarily performance enhancing in the moment or truly make you faster but helps immensely with recovery which obviously is an advantage in itself.
MC was a talented on the bike as anybody that came before him or since. He was a freak of nature!
Because of MC's dominance in SX, I think a lot of people tend to forget who he raced. Check out The Vault through MC's era, every year there was only a couple of guys in the top ten who didn't have a c-ship in either 125 SX/MX or 250 SX/MX very similar to now.
Kenny's not the only one, Colt Nichols has a pretty mean one, too...
