Like the title says, what’s your favorite torque wrench.
Proto, EPAuto, Snap On, Craftsman, Icon?
I’m in need of a new one and, curious what the Vital experts have to say. No, that’s not sarcasm. Some people say, Icon (Harbor Fright) is just as accurate as a higher quality brand.
Mods, I figured since I’m inquiring about tools used for working on bikes this would be Moto Related.
If I’m wrong, please move it to the appropriate section.
Once again, thanks fellas.
....but seriously. I've got a digital Sears Craftsmen torque wrench I bought back in 1992, it has served me well.
I use some HF tools too and have never had any issues.
Get ready for the tool-snob responses.
I have a 48” pipe wrench. Is that enough for my seat bolts?
Not sure if they sell them in the states, but in Australia Warren & Brown is the go. Also cat branded ones are good quality, as in Caterpillar earthmoving machinery brand.
If you're going to use it on mtb bikes might want to invest in one that clicks in reverse. Funny story - in one of the e-mtb bike Facebook groups I'm on ( Trek Rail Owners World Wide ) there must have been over a dozen posts about owners snapping the UDH - Universal Derailleur Hanger. They all said they had been careful but the part snapped before they even clicked to the recommended 25Nm per the manual. BTW - the part is reverse thread! Someone eventually asked if their wrenches clicked in reverse ... you could hear the face palms going off. lol

The Cat ones mentioned above are manufactured by Snap-On. It’s a great way to save $ by buying the Cat branded ones as they’re much cheaper!
I personally use Snap-On and Norbar.
I got this 3/8 Snap On wrench off of EBay, stole it off the guy. Bid was starting at £175, I bid £250 at the dying seconds & I got it for the £175. Brand new in the box.

Have the icon digital in 3/8 and 1/2. Nothing has come loose or been too tight upon disassembly so theres that. Think you’d be fine for basic bike stuff. Inside motor stuff may want to double check against a proven calibrated one first.
I've been a moto mechanic for 20+ years. My dad was a Truck mechanic and owned his own shop etc etc so I've had tools in my hands from a young age. I was brought up to believe Snap on/Mac was the only tools you trust, in which my boxes have several of each brand. Back in the day that statement was true... but there are plenty of quality tools out there now. I bought a 3/8 drive Icon click torque wrench from HF a while ago. I like it, haven't had any issues with it. I've done my own comparisons with my digital snap on to it and it seems equal. Had it tested on the snap on truck and it checks out the same as both my click and digital Snap on torque wrenches. I know there are other brands out there that are just as good quality as well.
Mac tools for me personally
If I could afford a Snap-On or Mac I would, but I've been using the same 3 Craftsman torque wrenches for almost 20 years. I'm assuming they are accurate as I haven't had any issues? *knocks on wood*
I have a 1/2” and 3/8” Craftsman digital wrenches, as well as 1/2” and 1/4” click-type. I thought I’d like the digital but I’m not totally sold on them (seems easier to overshoot your target). Other than that I’ve been pretty happy with them. The 1/4” is great for cam caps and other low-torque fasteners.
Something I heard awhile back is that like a tire gauge, torque wrenches are most accurate near the middle of their torque range and least towards the ends. Hopefully someone will chime in to confirm or dispel this.
Hands down my favorite (spoke) torque wrench and I honestly don't know how the hell I survived without one in my toolbox.

Check out precision instruments made in USA. I have there 1/4” and 3/8”. 1/2” I have a U.S. made craftsman. I believe precision used to make them for snap on before CDI.

I have this one, it's spendy, but it's the best one I have

I use a Snap On digital torque wrench. Only Snap On product I own, but was worth the splurge.
I prefer click type over digital. There is a more clear and satisfying sensation when desired torque is reached IMO, where the digital wrenches start beeping faster and changing color approaching your target and it is easy to overshoot desired torque. I take batteries out of my digital ones after every use and one (CDI) requires a small screw to take the door on and off, so it's a PITA. The advantage the digital has over the click-type is you can see torque reading at any moment, but this is not all that important to most people and you can also do that with a dial-type.
Digital Snap On, I don't really buy any of their other stuff but these are great.
I have an older Craftsman (not digital) that is in fine shape also. If you want it let me know, I'll send it to you!

Thanks @Zeke! We at Fasst Company make that wrench completely in-house these days. Originally CDI built it for us. Currently all of our spoke torque wrenches are assembled and calibrated by two Loretta's champ Sophie Phelps who works for us while she's getting her engineering degree.
Just picked up a LEXIVON torque wrench 5-6 months ago. I’m rather surprised by the quality, seems bulletproof so far . Great buy, good reputation, not pricey at all like snap on or Mac
This for base/mid speed nuts.
Nothing beats tohnichi. And can get them cheap from Amazon JP. With the USD/Yen.
I am partial to my snap-on's but there not really justifiable anymore, the price skyrocketed these last few years. I bought before the increase.
Not sure if anyone else on here watched this channel, but I like what this guy does to test a bunch of different brands of torque wrenches. Might be worth a watch before choosing which one to buy.
I like the CRaftsman Digi-click. I have a couple different torque wrenches but i keep going back to the Digi-Click.
Here’s my favorite torque wrench, it’s a t-handle

Project Farm and The Torque Test Channel are two of YouTubes finest channels.
I almost destroyed my MTB forks because the torque reading for the axle is in inch-pounds. I almost tightened the thing to 80 lb./ft! From now on, I'm measuring in N-M.
I’ve got a couple older Proto brand wrenches I use. I like the click style but have a couple dial type for setting bearing torque on automotive rear diffs.
Luckily I have a friend that works for an airline in the metrology lab and I get them checked every year or so. The Proto wrenches are within the stated tollerence every time he checks them.
Where you guys sending Torque wrenches for calibration. I'm thinking after watching that video and 30 years of use, wondering if my Craftsmen is out of spec.
