Heard it may have been insurance related.

I can't see how it could be insurance or safety related when electrics had been allowed for years ? Also, if that was the case, why would FIM change the rules just 24 hours before the race? And why wouldn't FIM provide a reason?

On this thread it's hard to not get confused between FIM SuperEnduro and AMA Endurocross, the fact is that electric bikes have been allowed in both championships for years.

2024 AMA Endurocross starts in about 10 months so obviously plenty of time for last minute fuckery and money talks, I'm still hopeful to see the Varg first steps in this competition.

This comment earned me a suspension on thumpertalk. The site has gone so downhill they are down to one moderator who apparently bans people he disagrees with in-between writing HOA citations.

When did GuyB take over thumper talk?

I can't find the supplement rules for 2024, is the AMA about to pull a FIM clown maneuver, allowing electric bikes until 2023 then suddenly forbidding them once the Varg is released?

or they will change the rule to 18 kW of maximum output!

They had better fucking not because I’m hoping to do the full series next year to promote our YZ kit, if they pull that BS there are going to be a lot of pissed off people.

KTM is just mad that their frames are terrible platforms for E-conversions Laughing

As I said before Endurocross has had e-bikes for years, including one on the pro podium. No worries for letting them in. It’s even written in the rules that they are legal.

However I’d be shocked if Taddy actually races the series next season. He was out of the top 5 all last season on his factory 350 and rode like he didn’t even want to be there. Watching him ride the Stark looks even worse. I just don’t see it lasting that long. He’s definitely the best Endurocross/SuperEnduro there has been, but at over 40 I just don’t see it happening next year in Endurocross.

The new season's rules were announced the day before the first race, when Taddy had already received, in writing, permission from the FIM to race the Stark in the 2024 SuperEnduro series!

Not sure about Taddy but once you pull the rug out from under me you don’t get a second chance.

Supplemental rules need to be approved every year. Racing Electric bike with gas bikes is not a thing the AMA will be approving for 2024 at this time. Never say never but in the current climate it will be a no

Heard it may have been insurance related.

I eluded to this being an issue in professional racing as the popularity of electric grows and goes through growing pains.  I know it is not common, but batteries are dangerous, the bigger and more powerful, the more dangerous when things go wrong in charging, or damage due to crashes.  If anybody has ever watched Battlebots, you would see they literally have a trained and dedicated safety crew to handle battery related issues and fires - you would be amazed at how specialized the equipment is to handle these fires, it goes way beyond a flagger with a fire extinguisher.

I could be totally wrong, that is fine, but if it is insurance related, I would not be at all surprised if the "what if" scenario was brought up, and this was a learning opportunity for the promoters and teams.  As more electric bikes and classes evolve, I would not be at all surprised if there was not a new safety team required at professional racing events.  It may be just a small hurdle for this case with an moderately easy solution - learn from other electric forms of sports and racing.  I would bet my first born Formula E has a similar safety crew.

That’s fucking lame. But it is the AMA and we all know they are complete fucking idiots and RARELY do what is right for the sport of motocross/dirt bike racing.

If this is an E-bike related issue how many local tracks would have to ban them?

None. We're going to start building tracks in metropolitan cities and add charging stations because electric bikes are quiet.

You're right you need special training and equipment and safety requirements for electrics. One example is the FIM asked Stark to provide a dedicated fire marshal and so they did. They could also ask for dedicated charging spot, probably outside, which would not be an issue since the Varg only needs a standard outlet (or generator if need be). But mostly, electrics have been allowed in this championship for years, it was previously not a problem for them to compete so I doubt this last minute change could be related to safety. Or it would be very easy for the FIM to state what they require safety wise, but instead of that electrics have disappeared overnight from the regulations without any explanation.

As for insurance, well, the Varg has been racing France SX tour including indoors without any issue, first round of FIM super enduro was in France so I can't see the issue there neither?

It almost pains me to kill your buzzkill, as it looked so promising there for a minute and your joy must have been palpable, but it's called a "Release Form." They're written by attorneys in order to shield tracks from liabilities stemming from accidents and incidents and crashes of all sorts, including fires caused by something or someone trapped under a hot exhaust header. Not that anything like that has ever happened, because that would be something that would further kill your buzzkill, and we can't have that.

Anyway  - You sign one of those releases every time you enter a race, you probably just never read it. Once I became a track owner, I had one created for my track's LLC by a good bud who owns a very successful person injury law firm (because he would know). I asked him how iron-clad it was, and he said, "Let me put it this way: if someone comes out to that place and you shoot them in the head - they'll have to reimburse you for the cost of the bullet." My point being, the idea that the F.I.M. and/or A.M.A. might need to ban the Varg in order to shield themselves from a potential lawsuit - is pure folly. And the same goes for local track owners. People die on tracks pretty much every year now, and sadly, we're all too aware of this harsh reality.

Meaning what? He did the work pro-bono, and he OWNS a major personal injury law firm that deals with faulty release forms and improperly worded liability clauses and safety disclosures on a day-by-day basis.

But no, he took me for a ride and had no idea what he was talking about, I'm sure. And lemma guess - you do.

FIM is such a clown show. The CMA (Canadian motorcycle association ) which has been the FIM affiliate for decades are a match made in heaven .

Why is anyone surprised that AMA, FIM , whoever else, may have changed the rules regarding electric bikes ?

Perhaps they have discussed this with the current manufacturers & sponsors etc. and decided to stick with ICE bikes for the time being .

Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM,GasGas, Husqvarna ( and soon Ducati & Triumph) have put a lot of money into the sport, so of course they will have influence over rules.

Money talks, and of course the racing authorities are going to try and keep the biggest investors in the sport happy.

Stark are still just a start-up business at the moment.

I’m sorry do you work for the AMA?  I’m trying to understand your background and if you’re speaking from a position of inside knowledge or are just making an assumption.  If you do work for the AMA myself and a few others from the electric industry would very like to have a serious discussion with you about the future and how this issue can be handled productively for both sides.
