Kinda like how people are brushing over the fact of riding illegally on federal land and getting in an altercation with a police officer?

Rent a pig throwing down might not be accurate.

Cut and Paste,

According to SCSO, the incident started when the two men were contacted by an armed security person for trespassing on the Bonneville Power Administration, which is federal land. SCSO said the area was "clearly marked by signage."

Security and the two men eventually made contact with each other and "a heated verbal exchange" started. It then escalated into a physical fight between security and one of the men. The second man got involved in the physical altercation with security.

Witnesses to the altercation told investigators the two men appeared to be aggressive or actually fighting with security. At some point, security fired his weapon and hit the two men.

One of the men was taken to the hospital, where he is still receiving treatment. The other man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Big maybe. If the young fellow that lost his father and ate some lead initiated the physical contact I am 99% sure it would have been indicated.

What a horrible thing to happen, a man with a kid on dirt bikes is shot. Who shoots a man with a child over riding dirt bikes on their property? Guy needs to be locked up !!

Since we don’t know the whole story, I’m assuming the answer to your question is a security guard getting beat up by a couple guys on dirt bikes?

It is incredible to me people posting here apparently cannot read.  This was not farmer Bob kicking them off his land by shooting them and has zero to do with the 2nd amendment.  This is on federal land and the "guard" was a federal agent.

How in the hell do you get into a physical altercation with a federal agent or any law enforcement?  I don't know, but it will not end well.  I highly doubt the agent just shot them for riding dirt bikes.

I have no idea what actually happened and we never will, but just trying to share this is not a gun ownership issue or citizen dispute.

If they're attacking my son, I'm going to protect him, even if it costs me my life.

Resolving issues without violence should always be the first goal, but mess with someone's kid, there's going to be trouble.

We need to see details on what happened.  It's possible the victim and his son handled the interaction poorly, but it could also turn out that the security guard is at fault.  If he is, I could give a F whether he's a federal agent.  He needs to be held accountable.

The rules of engagement in this country should be equal for everyone, whether or not they're in law enforcement.

If it's not right for a citizen to shoot someone, it should not be OK for law enforcement to shoot someone in that exact same situation.

Radical wrote:

For those who downvoted, I'm not offended.  But what do you disagree with me on?

I did, but looking back on it I probably shouldn't have.  I think the first sentence did it.  I find today's coddled, can-do-no-wrong children are a contributing factor to today's declining society.

Sorry if offensive and I love my son more than anything in the world but if he's resisting arrest, or starting something then that's on him.  I'm not running to his defense strictly because he's my son.  There are consequences to one's actions and sometimes it's more than deserved but that's the position you put yourself in.

I hate someone died as much as anyone especially someone in our small community.  But I'm not ready to fire up the torches at some guy who was doing his job when I have no clue what the circumstances were.

I seem to remember last year there was a rash of vandalism at sub stations around the northwest. I assume guys using the transformers for target practice. For a spell they were wondering if it was coordinated and a form of domestic terrorism. Just going off memory.

I'm not saying at all that that's what the guys were doing, but it does explain heightened security. In fact, ever since 9/11, the dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers got a LOT MORE SECURE. High powered cameras, guard stations, restricting the public from viewing fish ladders, boat locks and driving over the dams like a bridge. It really sucks to be honest.

I hear you and I needed to look it up myself.  If you go to street view (picture 1) there is no signage, no fencing, and there are plenty of walk paths and riding paths that go from the street into the property.  Picture 2 is the top view of the property and I circled the 'street view pic' in red and the moto trails in green.

Seems like a million miles from 'no warning signs or fences' to shooting somebody and their kid. Fuck!

Sad deal for all involved.

Grew up riding many of BPA  powerline trails and little tracks around the powerlines in Washington State in the 80's & 90's.  Never had any issues other than getting checked for a ORV tag from time to time by game wardens.  Always thought most of the powerline trails were recreational easements.  Perhaps a lot has changed up there,

You need to watch the video and read the witness statements.  The pictures you showed may be fine to be there, but where this occurred was littered with no trespassing and warning signs.  The witnesses specifically said it was clearly posted.....and regardless if they physically attacked someone and he feared for his life than using his weapon was justified.  This could happen with or without no trespassing signs.  You have a right to defend yourself and based on witness statements that is what happened.

This area and this parking/staging lot seem to be the area in question based on the news video.  You can see a well-defined track on street view.  You can also see the yellow no-trespassing signs.  All considering google street view does not necessarily represent current-day.

I can’t give you the answer you want but here is the difference in simple terms.  Federal owned land and private owned lands fall under a different set of laws and jurisdiction than private owned property.  Different laws, judges, law enforcement you name it.  I would guess in South African there are land/property owned by individuals and owned by the South African government.  Therefore law enforced by different entities if I had to guess.

I can’t say about a contract security guard on federal land providing security.  But a US federal law enforcement officer, federal Game warden or whoever federal are not to be fucked with.  They are the wrong bear to poke.  Same with trespassing.  Trespassing on federal land in this country is not always the smartest thing to do.

With all that said, if you read the article it says being investigated by local law enforcement if I read it correctly.  Which kinda says the shooting was not on federal owned property.

I feel bad for this all families involved, a life was lost.  Then again rights is right and wrong is wrong.  It’ should be easier to march than fight, especially with someone with a gun.

Apply your logic to illegals crossing into Texas in Big Bend national park, which is federal land.  They are entering illegally and are trespassing.  Confrontations occur daily.  Same rules still apply to everyone?  With respect to the incident that occurred, there simply isn't enough information to take any side IMHO.  I've seen dipshits riding dirtbikes at places they shouldn't have been and I've seen dipshit cops/LEO do stupid corrupt shit - or some that just make mistakes in the moment.  No one knows what happened.  And just because it was federal land doesn't mean anything, see first comment above.

If the illegals confronted the border patrol agents like these guys reportedly did, you better believe their chances of getting shot would increase.  These guys weren’t shot at for trespassing.  Sounds like they were shot at for getting into a confrontation with an armed guard.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

At this point we don't know what happened.  It could've been the riders who escalated things. It could've been the security guard.  We'll have to wait for details.  I'm not going to assume either way.

Let’s say this was posted in non moto section.  What if the two people shot with one ending in fatality were not part of the dirt bike community, never owned a dirt bike.   The security guard didn’t pull them over for riding a dirt bike/trespassing.  They were pulled over for backing up to no trespassing sign and dumped an old washing machine a car battery and 13 gallon kitchen trash bag full of shitty baby diapers.  A heated argument and physical altercation took place.  Security Gaurd felt his life was threatened and used his firearm.  If I had to guess and it’s just a guess.  Comments might be  like…..who would want to take a chance and get shot over dumping trash on federal land.

This is my point about one set of rules.

If the security guard felt his life was threatened, is he allowed legally to shoot the other person even if he happens to be the one who escalated the interaction?

If that's the case, how is that different from the dad or son feeling that their lives were in danger, because the cop was losing his temper?

It's not.

There should be one set of rules of engagement for all to follow.

My approach with LEO's is if they didn't want to shoot someone they'd have picked a different career, especially snipers, so always assume they'll shoot before a rational person would expect. There are good ones out there, but there's also a lot that I wouldn't trust with a gun ever.

This rings home for me because to get to our local river trails we ride  1/3 mile down some residential streets and then down a flood control ditch that's technically illegal. It's the only way to access the river though because the government never put in access points. I hear people say that the wheelie guys should get ran over by the cops and all I think of is my son and I cruising 20mph down to the trails and a maniac cop runs us down from behind...

A guy was shot by a sniper here in Wichita a few years ago during a SWATing. He was super confused and was pulling up his sweat pants. Four cops on the porch with him didn't feel threatened, but the sniper across the street did...

In my experience, most LEO's do a great job, and are there for the right reasons.

Confrontation and escalation are 2 different things here.  Of course they were confronted.  What we don't know is how things escalated.

Here's my armchair quarterback crime scene analysis after watching a few videos like this one below.

I'm leaning toward John Franklin and his son being good people.  John owned a business and took his boys to ride often at the local track where they volunteered time to help water the track, pick rocks from the track, etc.  The track owner described him as a great person, and so did another associate at an auto body shop.  It's possible John was a raging asshole who picked fights with everyone, but I'm not buying that.

If you zoom in from aerial view you will see a ton of turn tracks scattered around the property.  According to the track owner everyone has been riding there for years and there have never been problems with security.  He even mentioned the Sheriff's drive by without concern.  So I'm going to say they were riding at their normal spot (illegal) and got rolled up on by a puffy chested security guard (contractor) who came in really hot.  Most of you know exactly what I'm talking about. Some of these power tripping security guards have something to prove.  With that said, words were exchanged and things escalated quickly, i.e. "calm down we're leaving, we've been riding here for 20 yrs, what are you going to do, shoot us??"

Now I could be wrong, and for whatever reason the polite security guard was simply asking them very nicely to leave and the Dad and Son decided to jump out of their truck and start beating him for no reason.

Another thing that is troubling to me is why did he shoot both people. After he shot the first person why the need to shoot the other? Normally when the shooting starts one won't charge a gunman. These people where unarmed.

Maybe the kid gave him lip maybe he didn't. If you let that turn into shooting two people your not very good at your job and don't need to be carrying a gun.

Been in a lot of gunfights, have ya?

Every one of your posts is ignorant, self-righteous nonsense and you can't have a reasonable disagreement with anyone.

Only thing any of us "know" is based on the news and eyewitness statements - if you have ever been involved in ANY critical incident, you would know hardly any actual facts come from the news or the people they choose to interview.

It used to be that when you were the one technically doing the wrong thing, you had to be super chill and apologetic when you got called out on it. These days, everyone thinks they're so fucking amazing that it doesn't matter, you do the wrong thing and you do it with assertive prideful chest-puffing awesomeness.

"Lack of facts"...... pretty ironic coming from you....especially since you've been all about making up your own facts in this thread.

Do you find it ironic that everyone here thinks your an idiot but somehow you think you're the smartest guy in the room?

Go ahead.....let's hear your bullshit follow up that is going to deflect from the fact that yet again you don't have fucking clue what you're talking about......

This was not a LEO, it was a contracted security guard that likely receives much less training then a federal trained and employed  LEO.

He fired 3 or more shots.

I’m not taking sides, just putting that out there.
