I have a chance to get a Varg. I’m REALLY wanting one but I’m also planning on trying to go to LL and race AMA Races in the Vet classes. I’m hoping DC sees this.
I’ve emailed every contact on MXSports site and no reply. I just want to know if they are going to allow them in the vet classes or any open classes. I just would like to know before dropping $14k on a bike I can’t race.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 let’s use the Vet Classes to test how the e-bikes fit in.
Vet classes should be open as hell. It's racing for fun! In any case, it's a pissing contest and should be treated as such! Vet Rules should be as flexible as the moto mom mud wrestling rules!
That’s how it is at local races but MXSports will most likely not let them race. At least not until the main manufacturers Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and KTM make one.
Should be able to it’s bullshit if not , I’ve seen some riders in Europe are aloud to race them now 👍

This issue seems easy to solve. Just make the 450 class Open. Open Vet, Open Pro Sport (already called that) Open B, C, A etc. Everyone says 450's are too much power already, so more power is irrelevant right?
^^^^ this
I called in to ask Steve about this fairly recently. From what I remember him saying, it sounds like MX Sports is out on electric for now (meaning next year.) Obviously things could change when the Japanese get involved.
This right here. They shut it down a few years ago when someone tried to race an Alta there in the vet class, which is an open displacement class. Rather than embrace new technology, they decided to not allow them to race. I would bet a lot of money that if it was one of the main manufacturers that had built the bike, it would have been allowed. And everyone wonders why this sport doesn't grow - because it's a good old boys club at the top.
You should be fine in the vet and open classes, I was told that the AMA is going to handle these on a case by case basis and they would likely be allowed in those classes without restriction.
"Likely" he's about to drop $14K on a likely?
The Honda CRF150 in the 85cc class kinda blows your whole theory.
But it shows how much pull Honda has. They created a new class for it.
I'm in the camp that electric won't officially happen until Honda says it will happen.
It's been that way with the AMA for 50+ years. The only caveat to that is that Harley's vote always overrides Honda's.
I don't think you are going to see DC around here anytime soon. That poor guy was lambasted pretty hard here because of the MATV situation last year, and I don't blame him one bit for not being here anymore.
With electric mx bikes being still relatively new I think it's going to take some time to sort out their place in this sport. I certainly wouldn't buy a Varg with the hopes of racing one at Loretta's just yet.
'open' means 'closed'?
Considering how bad the AMA messed up with the four strokes coming in and the displacement rules they really need to take their time on this and get it right this time we don't need to kill off the four strokes and what's left of the two strokes because everybody wants to race a faster bike!
My guess AMA is smart enough to wait till there are enough E dirt bikes to make a full class or classes. As bad as they did with 4 strokes, all but killing flat track. Which was once very popular. They are going to hold off on decisions for a while. E bikes may need to run a 15 min moto for example, should be in own class in my simple cowboy logic mind.
This has been discussed. https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Moto-Related,20/MX-Sports-amp-Electric-Motorcycles,1337093?mobile=false&page=0
Alta, Zero, Sur-Ron, etc. have never been allowed. The only electric bikes allowed are the "Micro E" produced by KTM/Husky/GasGas, which have their own class. (Edit: and Cobra. Thanks GrapeApe.)
Regarding "new and unproven technology" - electric motocross bikes have been around for over 14 years now: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/zero-motorcycles-hosts-first-ever-24-hours-of-electricross/
There has never been any timeline given to incorporate any electric into even the vet or open classes.
Cobra is in the Micro E class as well
Pit Row
They’ll just add another class for electric. Why not? They already have a million classes so what’s one more? All about the Benjamin’s for mx sports.
Stop the presses! There's a Moto Mom Mud Wrestling class at Loretta's??? Now I really want to go!
Pics?
No. Taken from the MX Sports Loretta's rule book.
DC will need to ask Honda/Yamaha/KTM, etc…and the answer from the overlords will be no..
Its not about what’s in the best interest of the sport of moto or it’s customers, it’s what’s in the best interest of those in charges pocket books..
But that can change. I really hope. I think the rule of them not being allowed in AMA is what killed Alta.
They could still fix 2 strokes but choose not to. I'd be surprised to see e-motocross bikes at any national mx or pro supercross events anytime soon. I'd bet we see an alternate league and racing pop up before electric motocross bikes are allowed even footing with 450s.
I kinda understand the “Pro” side of things. But in the open classes they should be able to race. Is there a CC limit in a vet class? Could someone build a 600cc bike and race it? If not, then what does it matter if e-bikes race.
Politics probably
There you go. Line up that Varg in the Mini E class.
So you want to give me your source where you have the chance to get a Stark Varg? Cause I’d like to buy if you don’t want it.
Honda would pull all support if they updated 2 stroke rules. I haven't heard anything about them doing the same for electric... haven't heard anything denying it either.
MotoAmerica allows Energica to compete in the Super Hooligan class. They haven't podiumed yet but appear to be evenly matched. Proof it has been done!
