Yamaha getting ready for electric MX

Yamaha have been researching hydrogen for internal combustion engines and fuel cells...

They are projecting long term all battery electric for future motorcycles, and using a mix of battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell for outboard motors...

I really don’t think hydrogen is the future. It’s a PITA to handle.  It’s a leaky little bugger.

Mike said what he thought after Moto Verte's Stark test. The fact that a major magazine has two distinct mechanicals with brand new 13000$ bikes and what they say about it should be put under the rug? I can assure you I didn't go to Spain to sabotage the bikes.

I keep asking for more details on these massive issues you talked about and You get mad and give limited info . I think everybody would like to know more details about the issues they had, what caused them and how they were fixed.

I have thought that Yamaha might be the first to have a full sized Varg like MX bike. Out of the Japanese , they are some of the more willing to jump in early, or take a little more of a chance with new tech or segments.  They have become a supplier of motors and controllers for MTB manufacturers , and make other electric stuff like another person posted.

The Yamaha branded EMTB's are some of the more affordable priced bikes when compared to others' with similar specs.  At least the ones I've looked at. I think a company like Honda or Suzuki that has many vehicles they could adapt a powertrain to be almost modular to work on motorcycles, atvs, sxs's and cars . They could  be able to make vehicles much less expensive than  pretty much anybody. They might be able to make say 6 or fewer different motors that could be configured to power pretty much any vehicle they build.    It could cut the number of parts they had to make down as far as powertrain. And they could be insanely profitable or offer less expensive options.

"I keep asking for more details on these massive issues you talked about and You get mad and give limited info . "

Talk about distortion of reality... Just can't believe what I read. I'd really like you to show me where and when I "got mad".

I gave you all the info I heard on the video and read in the magazine, I won't make up answers I don't know to try and satisfy you.

Out of four bikes, two of them wouldn't finish the day. That's a fact. I'm sorry you don't like it.

Once again, maybe it's bad luck. Maybe not.

Yamaha Global states a few interesting things, they are introducing 10 BEV’s in various categories over the next few years and that this bike is specifically to aid the development of various bikes. Along with this, he stresses the importance of a 'full season of racing' and that they have scheduled a mid season update on this bike. So based on this video it seems like a bigger deal than even I first presumed.

Exciting times.

Can you please just start a separate “e” forum? All it does is start controversy and arguments.  Which is great for interactions on the site but not beneficial to anyone as a whole. Not saying I don’t enjoy the debate but there needs to be a completely separate e bike safe space..

Then why are they posting in this forum? If there’s already a separate e bike specific forum why aren’t the mediators enforcing it?

The Japanese have been reluctant to introduce full ev, but the line about them thinking hydrogen combustion is the future is the fantasy of clickbait authors. Recently announced innovations in solid state batteries by Toyota (700 miles to a charge) have pretty much sealed the deal for Hydrogen powered transportation even though you can currently buy a Hydrogen car from them in the Mirai which runs on electric fuel cells not hydrogen combustion (much more efficient).

I think the Japanese are just reluctant to put all there research into just EVs.

I think they have correctly decided that the future is not going to be electric only, but a mix of electric , hybrid , hydrogen etc. , and some diesel still for decades to come.

A lot of the world  hasn't got an electric infrastructure up to the job of charging loads of vehicles.

There's way less hydrogen infrastructure than electric.

Yup and it’s way easier to run electrical lines than it is to ship cryogens all over the place.

Yamaha needs the new solid state batteries that Toyota announced. Made a manufacturing cost breakthrough. Like a 900 mile range, without crazy weight to boot! They says available for a '25 model year! Maybe game changer time.

How long has it been since Alta first introduced the Redshift? Am I to believe that the big five don't have the engineering firepower to develop something equal or better? They really need to screw around with trials bikes and pee-wees to develop something comparable to a Stark?

What do the big 5 know that Alta and Stark didn't/don't? I am of the opinion that if Yamaha wanted to introduce an electric motocrosser, they could probably do so without having to screw around with trials.

Alta only sold around 1000 worldwide.  So that's a small segment. KTM sold around 36K  2-stokes I think , in 2022 I could be off on that number my memory is not what it used to be.   I think that the Alta was not the wake up call that the Varg may be. If they have the claimed 18K pre orders. Stark themselves thought it would be great if they could sell 5k bikes.

I think that everybody underestimated the level of interest an electric MX bike would have with the current battery  tech somewhat limiting range. Now that Stark has shown that there is a much bigger demand , that may be the trigger to step up the R&D to bring out a bike.  But they work a few years ahead. So right now  they are refining  the 2026 and 27 model designs , and 2025 pre production bikes are likely being tested so they can finalize them.  If they took Alta seriously , they may have something close to being ready to bring out. But if Stark is the spark that starts the electric era , we may not see bikes for a few years or more. KTM seems to move a little faster than the Japanese brands. And likes to offer many options.  But I'm sure they are also multiple years ahead.

Why bring out a new model that could result in years of R&D on the Gas bikes going to waste.  And risk a similar issue of  bikes sitting at dealers like when the 4 strokes came out. Or risk that people may not end up buying the Varg in the numbers the Pre orders are at. I bet they are watching very closely. And waiting to see how Stark's sales of delivered bikes go.

Or they might be working on getting longer runtime, and waiting until they can get the time needed to do full races in the current formats.

The Japanese have been hesitant in using lithium-ion batteries due to the fire risk and reputational damage.

Honda has fully committed to EV, but only with solid-state batteries they are developing in-house

These won't be available until the end of this decade, don't expect to see an electric motocross bike from Honda until 2027-2029.

Yes, at the moment there is.

Just like there wasn't much infrastructure for charging EVs a few years ago, but now there is much more.

JCB and others are doing a lot of research for hydrogen use in heavy construction machinery & trucks, other people are seeing if it's viable for cars etc.

If it works out to be a good alternative to batteries , then infrastructure will follow, just like it did with car charging.

Like them or not, the Electric MX bike threads get a lot of views and interaction in the main forum.  That is what drives a website of this type. It is good for the site, and there is a level of interest . If the threads were all duds , they may be more likely to move them.

Moto related is pretty vague and more of a general title in my opinion. If it is related to Moto , and gets good views, interaction I do not see an issue.  I could see this thread being a stretch to be moto related, and the Sur-ron style bike threads. But Alta and Varg size bikes are as much motocross bikes as they are electric. And fit in both areas.

I understand that, I was talking about the threads themselves. And how they seem to do better in the Moto related VS the electric only section.  I was not trying to argue or anything. Just giving my opinion of another reason they allow Electric in the Moto related.

A healthy message board is kinda organized chaos , if everybody got along and it was always sunshine , butterflies and high fives. The engagement and views would drop . Keeping it on the line of respectful disagreements  helps it thrive. If you did not have the back and forth that happens the threads die.

I was trying to  make more of the point that Electric MX bike threads  fit the  area and also do very well , so they are overall good for the sites health.
