What a tremendous story. If you're a fan of the sport, this is a must listen. So many great nugget's throughout. Ian certainly seems to be a great dude. I had forgotten how he'd been involved in so many championships and pivotal moments/signings/developments in our sport. From World and MX Championships with Alby, to Suzuki and Decoster, developing the RM-250, signing and working with MC, TP, RC, RD and then on to KTM with Decoster, developing their 450, signing Dungey, etc.. Really good listen. I learned quite a bit actually.
Did he thank Ping for having him on?
I’ll have to listen!!
Really enjoyed the show. Always love hearing the stuff that went wrong with McGrath and Suzuki in 1997. What could have been.
Exactly! And to think McGrath had one week on the RM-250 before A1.. and still dam# near won the SX Championship!! Enjoyed the story about Decoster and Harrison going to see an Amishman out in the Maryland countryside during the 97' Budds Creek round to have one of McGrath's bar mounts ground down with his lathe. Apparently when Skip Norfolk took over at that particular race , he discovered(in addition to the carb slide issue) one of the mounts was a few mill's taller than the other.
Also, how about Suzuki paying RC double what he was making at Honda!! Doh!! I think they received a tremendous ROI on that move! Ha!

I’m always so amazed by the stories of the guys racing in Europe during the 70s-90s. Lol at Ian and Greg’s race shop being in a former pig barn.
WW2 created motocross.
That was AWESOME eh. What a great guy
That was a great show! What a story and just gutting it out. I love hearing the stories from the GP days, it sounds like it was just nomads roaming through Europe with MX bikes in their vans!
Will listen for sure, I enjoy these pod cast… still have to finish up Factory Phil”s….
Just finished the show. Thanks for the recommendation. What an amazing story working with absolute legends over decades yet still modest and reserved. I also appreciate that he didn’t hesitate to give opinions but did so in a way that wouldn’t be offensive even if you disagree. I knew nothing about Ian other than him being the team manager of RedBull KTM when in reality he’s had more of an effect on the sport than most top riders themselves.
Kudos to Pingree also for being a top notch interviewer who makes his guests relaxed enough to tell their own story without prodding and a bunch of leading questions. I’m pretty new to WT but it’s rapidly becoming one of my favorites. Insightful and very interesting without a bunch of hokey bullshit filler.
I know what I'll be listening to during work tomorrow...
Awesome pod. Ian and Roger always seem so intense at the races but at the end of the day they are normal guys who love motorcycles and have dedicated their lives to this sport. It's sad to see the current state of Suzuki after hearing all of the effort Ian and Roger put into those bikes and that team.
Super nice guy and knows his shit no doubt.
“So Ian coops had a few bad years what’s the secret to this year?” He had one bad year lol
Man...that was another awesome interview. Say what you want about Ping, he is one of the best interviewers out there today in our sport.
To be honest, I did not know anything about Ian. He comes across as a genuinely good person. What a career he's had. Nice to actually hear someone at that level of the sport mention faith too.

Can you provide a little further detail?
We have Jesus shoved down out throats virtually every podium interview. If that's your lifestyle choice fine, the rest of us don't need to hear about it.
Then don't listen. If a rider gets on the podium, they've earned the right to thank who they like, and if someone is being interviewed, they can thank whoever they like. That's not being shoved down your throat.
Pit Row
By your goofy logic, Tickle thanking his dog after his first win is shoving pet ownership down our throats. All they're doing is saying the words God/Jesus/The Man Up Above, they're hardly pushing anything down your throat...
On topic: This was a really good interview, and Ping and Ian both did a great job of not really rehashing stories from the Albie episode.
If you want to know more, I'd suggest asking/discussing it in private.

He talked a little bit about his Christian beliefs. He’s a solid guy who loves Jesus.
Ian’s a class act. Great listen.
Poor Wyatt, he’s never going to live down the 97 season 😂
Ha, no shit, different sized bar clamp risers?!?! Holy hell that's sketch.
The amish guy machining off a half a millimeter with his belt driven barn lathe story is off the charts though. Hahahaha
Sounds like you are doubting yer existence and purpose here on this earth. The Lord still loves you.
That was such a good show! What an incredible amount of experiences.
Thanks Mav. I didn't mean for my post to create a stir. It was not meant to be a discussion...just a simple observation of something I appreciated. It's sad that some people have to be so hateful over something so benign.
You can't be that naive
The reasons that you shouldnt discuss religion, are the same reasons I don't discuss masterbating.
It should be kept private, well most times.
Yes, Ian has certainly lived a fascinating life, in the right places at the right times.
It was a great interview.
