His dad John raced bikes until he was 38-years-old. He announced his retirement in 2000 at the age of 33 but kept racing occasionally, winning Mammoth's Kamikaze downhill in 2004 and 2005, when Eli was 13-years-old.
Eli's son is almost 3 and his daughter is 1, so they're not about to need a race dad.
Eli is only 30, turning 31 in November.
Based on his injury history he probably has the health to compete for a lot longer if he chose to.
Justin Brayton raced until he was 38, winning Daytona in 2018 a few days before turning 35.
Chad Reed raced until he was 38, winning his last race at 33 and his last podium at the age of 37.
Eli is at his peak and appears to be enjoying racing more than ever. If he retires he will probably hate it. Like his dad, he is wired for racing and to stop early might result in him coming out of retirement anyways.
What do you guys think, could he possibly Ironman his way into another five or more years?
Could he? Yes.
Will he? Unlikely.
He'll get tired of seeing Jett's rear fender
I agree but I hope we're both wrong.
I feel like he's timing it to go out on top. The way this season is shaping up he may be absolutely exhausted by the end of the year.
There would have to be a lot of reasons ($$$) to pull him back in for yet another go I think.

The thing that is cool about Eli is he is finally taking the mantle of the leader of the sport. Dungey was very comfortable being the leader and the face of the sport with the Wheaties boxes and ESPY's and everything that went with being a champion. Until last year about the MXdN time it seemed like Eli only cared about winning and training. Now he is accepting of the position he has as leader of the sport. With that being said he seems to be reenergized by it and I kind of expect him to race at least next year. He may sign a contract under the agreement of as soon as he doesn't feel competitive, or the fire is gone he quits no questions asked. If he races next year, I could see 60 race wins out of him.
Just for context if you really have nothing in your life better to do and want to go back to my past posts. I was a big critic of him and stated the year he won his first title that if he didn't win one his career would not be a success. If he wins this one start carving his face on Moto Mt. Rushmore. MC, RC, Eli, Bubba
Sure he could.
...but he should go out on top.
Risk of injury vs reward at this point, just not worth it.
At the beginning of the year, I would have said I could see another couple of years. That look on his face the night it was starting to rain standing in the tunnel though, I could almost see the look of Why did I sign up for this in his eyes. I hope he stays happy, This version of ET has been awesome. With that said, Finishing a whole season of SX, MX and the SMX finals may be enough to finish his fun off.
I knew he would ride Outdoors this year. His body language on and off the bike are very telling of where his mentality is at. No one has ever seen Eli as happy as the past year and a half. A happy Tomac is a dangerous Tomac. With another Historic Daytona Win last weekend, These boys are (possibly) about to get steam rolled the rest of the Supercross season. At this time I can see Tomac signing up for '24 Supercross and doing the same "on-the-fly contract" to if he will continue or not. He always said "If I'm competitive and winning races, I'm going racing"
Tomac to switch to HRC and win titles with three different 450 manufacturers and then ride off into the sunset? i can only wish.
Sure he could. Star appears to be a champions type no bullshit team, I could not see him elsewhere. Not feeling he would want to, the price to pay for winning is getting dearer, Cooper and Sexton are getting stronger, with a lot of fast 250 riders and AMs moving up. That said, I think we can all agree he could be competitive another 5 years if he wanted to. And the important thing getting a paycheck!
5 years is a stretch. BUT, realistically he's going to ride and sign season by season contracts until he can't win or it isn't fun anymore. But currently, he's doing both and isn't slowing down.
It would be cool to see him stick around and try and get closer to the 72 SX win record. Its a longshot, but he seems to be getting better every year still.
He's won national titles on 3 brands already.
I’m an ET3 fanboy, but I’d like to see him go out on top. I feel like Reed tarnished his legacy a little by hanging around outside of his prime, even though it’s cool to see these guys race
I'd race as long as they're willing to pay for my time, JT$ mentioned in 2019ish that Chad was still pulling in 300k+ a year. That'll definitely be worth it 30 years down the road if invested wisely.
I'm guessing Eli is doing quite well and doesn't need the 300K a year. Bet he'll step into some other form of racing after moto.
I think you're right. Doesn't Eli race $300k cars for a hobby?
Pretty sure his daughter is 3 and son is 1.
I would be shocked if he goes past 2024. I think he will stop after this yr but thats just a pure guess on my part. If goes out and wins 5-6 nationals and wins a few more sx and both titles he may just show up again next yr.
Pit Row
I'm guessing Reed had quite a lot in the bank as well and didn't "need" the 300k.
Honest question not trying to argue but why does everyone think it is a knock on an accomplishment to see someone race past their prime? It has no bearing on what they’ve already accomplished and if anything it is because of their accomplishments that they are afforded the opportunity to race well past their prime on good equipment. Then they get to leave when they choose which I think is all anybody could ask for. Just my two cents!
Exactly. I think the point of it was that when Chad was "way past his prime" he was still making more money than a racer without his past results and name, that was getting similar results would be getting paid. And Often you'll hear retired racers talk about how they turned down 30K to race overseas or similar or less amounts, and say how they wish they had done it back then.
If he's still enjoying it like Chad was, then why not keep racing as long as you want to and can? Yah his win percentage would drop as he slows down. But if he's loving racing and still wants to go race , his overall wins would still stand. Reed is still up there in overall wins. And I think the length of his career was impressive too. He was still fast enough to lead laps at anypoint. Maybe not win mains.
I'm no Eli Tomac. but if I could get paid a good amount , had a big pile of money in the bank, and did not have anything else I wanted to do, why not keep racing? I can see why he may want to stop, and go out on top. Not many racers are able to go out on top on their own terms. That alone makes him one of the greats. I would love to see him stick around. Just think about if we had the current Villopoto around when he was racing. How much more interesting would the podium speeches be? If Eli becomes as relaxed as RV and is still racing, that's a win for fans in my opinion . I think that the way his Dad has had him not start to train until he was older and his dads experience will have extended Eli's racing nomatter when he calls it quits. And with his Dad's experience I also think that when Eli stops, He will know for sure when its time. He can lean on his Dad for feedback. Not many people in the world could offer advice with similar real world experience than John. I'm loving watching him race this year. He is one of the few guys who listens to and answers the questions he is asked.
At most he races next year. If he wins out this year and especially if he leads us to another Des Nations win I say he's done.
Why would he not ? He is healthy and wins at a regular pace. Jett will be the next to challenge but who knows when it will click for him.
IMSA, LeMans, 24 hours Daytona
I'm sure Reed was making more than $300k a year in 2019. Dean Wilson just mentioned recently ( I'm thinking it was on Gypsy, not positive) that he's still making $500-$600k year being a top 15 guy. I know Wilson markets well, but I would have to think Reed would be making as much or more for having similar results
And bugling bulls in the Fall. The good life.
My speculative guess is that Eli himself has no idea what 2024 will look like, I really like that he's taking it one race weekend at a time and enjoying himself. IF ET3 goes back to back #1 in both SX and MX it would hard to not want to see him exit the sport at the pinnacle and on his own terms
Delusional
I think he's more likely to race until he's 70 than he is to switch teams at this point
The idea of legacy and "going out on top" is generally more important to fans than riders.
Sometimes racers just want to race.
There will be an end - personally I think Eli will continue until he's not having fun or doesn't feel he can win.
Keeping it open with short-term commitments like he has been doing is a smart choice. Even if things get tough with Sexton, Jett or whoever down the road, there will be opportunities to cash big WSX checks for years.
