Retired Pro’s that could still make a main

After some time off, Justin Hill did well last week and it got me thinking..

Who could come off the couch and squeeze into a main event in the 450 class?

Brayton is an easy pick.. how about RV, Reedy, Dunge, Seeley, Alessi, anyone else I’m forgetting?

Bubba. He is looking slimmer and slimmer everytime I see him. Plus his natural talent makes up for a lot of things and he has much more than anyone else listed so far. Also Canard and Tickle if they are both still testing for Honda and Kawasaki respectively, shouldn't have a hard time making it in.

Jacob Hayes, Tyler Bowers, Kyle Regal, Jimmy Albertson, Matt Biscelgia, and all the other 30-35 year old dudes that are less than 10 years removed.

I know he's been off of the bike for a long time and cleaned up his act many moons ago but if we could get the Dogger a porch pass with some coke, strippers and a Vegas weekend, I'm sure he could at least make it to the LCQ at an event. This is a joke of course; I was a Ron Lechien fan when I was a kid. Josh Grant and Reed are the two I think could literally come off of the couch for a race.  Possibly Windham if he really wanted to prove a point.

Obviously the talent is there in all of the above names, but you have to remember how quickly the speed and intensity necessary to qualify in SX drops off with time and age. Remember Reed's last full season? He was going to LCQs on a regular basis. And he's a two-time champ and near the top of the all-time wins record.

Maybe qualifying for Nationals would be a more realistic ask, but even then it's no easy feat.

I'd be interested to know who everyone thinks is the OLDEST retired pro that could make a 450 main would be.

Say with 3-6 months notice. Mike Brown is still aggressive and isn't he 50 now? McGrath does still ride SX tracks for fun.

I always enjoyed seeing Junkyard Dog mixing it up in the Nationals in his later years.

A lot of these guys if you called them up to race a2 would struggle to win a lcq but I think 2 months notice and they could run in the main

Thinking about the time Travis tried and failed.  I can’t remember the year, maybe it was St. Louis?

The only retired riders that would have a chance are Dungey, RV, and maybe Canard, Tickle

Since I am just about the same age as McGrath, he is the one who I would love to see if he could do it.  I still race regularly, I know my speed has fallen off (even though it feels like I'm going as fast as ever), but I still mostly feel good out there.  Obviously, I was never near the speed of McGrath.  But there are guys in my age class who are way faster than me.  Since McGrath appears to still be riding regularly, and even races from time to time.  I don't think it's impossible that he could do it, if he spent 6 weeks to get into shape for it.

In 2018, McGrath raced a District 37 GP.  Josh Grant was in the same race, at a time when Grant was still making supercross main events.  Lap times were about 5+ minutes, and McGrath was about 10 seconds off Grant's lap times.  Grant was qualifying in the ~15th range for Supercross.  If McGrath was 2 seconds off Grant's qualifying times that would put him in the range of guys like Carlen Gardner, Catanzaro, Ryan Breece, Tyler Enticknap, etc.

Here's the results for that GP: http://www.moto-tally.com/d37/gp/results.aspx/2018/8/O7/LT

If I had to guess which of those names could do it right now…?

Tickle has been riding with El Hombre & appears to be the fastest he’s ever been: and, he’s in excellent shape.
