sORRY TO GRAB AHOLD OF THIS THREAD A YEAR LATE BUT i WAS A BIT BUSY...Ooops...caplock gets me again...Hey Kamakazi...wasn't it '71 or '72 when Tom Schirle's dad sponsored Magoo, you and a couple of others with his company Valley Slurry Seal? He had blue and black bibs made with the rider names and numbers on them - like the Euro riders used. I've got a couple of photos of Magtoo that survived the fire I gotta get scanned and posted. One of my favorites is Magoo on a Maico in the air, totally crossed up and one hand up as he looks down between the seat and his leg. Maaybe checking to see if the barn door was open! Brad Zimmerman used that in Cycle Times on the last page when he started a "Save The Cross-Up" photo contest. I think it was the only one published before it went out a business. Tom's younger brother Brian was the same age as Magoo and they raced together, too and Magoo was at the Schirle's house one Saturday before the races riding Sting Rays in rhe halls of Encina High School next to their house and I was on my Sting Ray jumping off the steps in front of the Boy's Gym when they rode up and talked me into jumping off the raised planter box into the parking lot. I tried but crashed hard into the asphalt. They rode off wheelying and laughing. Gotta love it...

Hard to believe its been two years ago today....... October 5, 1959 – May 4, 2010

Danny " Magoo " Chandler was one of the very few guys that raced a dirt bike that was bigger then the race going on around him. From the very beginning he had a connection with the fans. And Danny had fans from the time he could sling a leg over a bike. Whatever that X factor was, Danny had it. Down to earth goofy ass hillbilly. He was a legend before he ever rode a national. How many guys can you say that about in an era of NO internet, cable tv, Nothing but Cycle news, MXA and Dirt Bike Magazine. It was word of mouth, all you had to do was see him ride once. He was almost a mythical creature to those that hadn't seen him ride.

In an era where all the top guys had nicknames and personalities to go along with them. Magoo was among the greats and wasn't afraid to rub elbows with the very best the world had to offer. And he accomplished that without winning championships. I'm not sure there's ever been or ever will be anything quite like him again.

If you were lucky enough to witness one of those days where it all just worked for him, Maybe one of those days at Plymouth, Est, Mcgills or even Dixon, Hell it could of been anywhere. Then you'll know what I'm talking about. There were days he did things on a dirt bike you didn't even know was possible and that no one else would even think of let alone try. And when it worked he was untouchable. I guarantee there were days it wouldn't of mattered if Decoster or mikola were there. They'd been running for second.

And when it didn't work........ well that's a whole other story. Danny could crash in ways that you didn't even know was possible. Rag doll doesn't even begin to explain it. The kind of stuff that would make Evil Kneivel cringe.

It was all for the fans, plain and simple, that's all it was about.... From the very beginning to the very end, He had the same sheepish grin. Making you happy made him happier.

So in closing I will say I hope you had the opportunity to at least once, cross your arms up on the side of a motocross track in front of the biggest jump around and turn a watch " Dazzling Danny Magoo Chandler " uncork the monster......!! Danny gave me a lifetime of memories all of which put a smile on my face and make me a kid again.

God speed

I Love you and I'll see you again....... Chris Gomez

At a golden state race one year the weather was not cooperating at all. It was progressively getting worse as the day wore on….and it was still early if I remember right. I went down to the line dragging my muddy ass leg behind as I remember it was hard walking for a guy with a wooden leg. I was wrenching for Joey Schlag that day and he was a player in the 125 class and had a shot at a good finish. Danny was also in that class and as usual Magoo was a force to be reckoned with. Anyway the 125’s lined up and the board went sideways…simultaneously the weather, which was already bad as shit took a turn for the worse. The wind started howling and blowing like it was the end of the world…no shit, that bad. Just then the gate dropped and there went 40 screaming, muddy, slipping and sliding 125’s up and over the hill. When the scooters were out of sight and sound most of the spectators headed for cover, any cover would do if you couldn’t make it back to your pits. Garbage cans, fencing, rocks, trees and bushes…anything to bear the brunt of the attack by the weather monster. And let me tell you…it was an attack! I would say the winds hit over 80mph easily and the ungodly amounts of rain were peppering your face and body like bb’s from a bb gun…stinging like a sonofabitch. Myself and most others literally forgot that there was a race still going on and just a few folks decided try and watch the race, to see if it would be called or what, red flagged was something most of us were praying for that’s for sure. I was one of the idiots that stayed to watch at least a lap of the race to see if my boy joey was doing ok and maybe possibly be leading that sucker. Come to find out, most if not all of the racers headed for the hills themselves, pulling off, pulling over or just laying it down, trying to avoid the peppering rain and the pain that went along with it. Goggles were useless at this point I am sure. Trying to listen for the bikes coming around the 1st lap was futile at best and ludicrous at worst as the storm pretty much blew out any noise the scooters might be making. At this point I believe they decided to red flag the race. All that was left to do was flash the riders the flag on the 1st lap and bring that moto on home. Out of the blinding rain and off into the distance you could barely make out the faint sound of a lone rm 125…wide fucking open and grabbing gears…braaappp…BRAAAAPPPPPP…WIIIINNGGGG…BRAPPPPPWIIIINGGGGG, 2ND, 3RD, 4TH GEAR…BRAAAPPWIIINNNGGGG! Here’s fucking Magoo coming up and around the finish line, no goggles, no face mask, open face helmet , up on the pegs and fucking pinned!! Nobody else even close…2nd or otherwise…in fact nobody else if recall correctly was still racing or even had their scooters running. Magoo didn’t see the red flag (duh) and was still going for it…went another half a lap before realizing what had happened and heading back to the pits. I met Joey back at the van and I asked him what happened and he said he just pulled off the track as far as he could, covered his face with his hands and put his head down, trying to shield himself from the flying mud, rain and debris. Nobody…NOBODY could believe anybody even survived one lap let alone make it one lap AND attempt another lap in those conditions.
That was the day Magoo looked Mother Nature in the eye and said “screw you…I’m here, what you got?” I can’t help but wonder and hope…that’s the way he went out sitting in that chair, alone and face to face with Mother Nature one last time….

I love you Magoo…thanks for everything my friend.

bobbym

PS: found out the next day a small tornado touched down near the track and winds exceeded 100+mph
Very good post Bobby!! thank you for sharing I will never forget those days:) Lets all toast Danny!! when the first main event goes off in...

Hey...Bobby M and Jimmie R....I couldn't resist bumping this one when I ran across it... I remember that GS Race very well. I was the guy that fought my way to the finish line with the red flag. Magoo was upset when we stopped the race....Couldn't see why the race couldn't continue......Fred Dion

Just read your entire thread for the 1st time...today.

Nice. Really, just awfully damn nice way to tell the story of how he was...day to day...from Baylands to Marysville. For me...I met him when he walked up to me and told me...in a very nice way...

"That thing wants to be wrung-out and you CAN get all the way over that jump A LOT easier than landing on top of it." We were both on 1980 CR125s & he was the reason I learned to pull a really good 2nd gear start...and showed me how to just "go for it...it'll work!" It's not like I knew him real well, like you and your family; but, that's the funny thing...&... I'll bet you know this: you didn't need to be someone that he "knew". He didn't care. You were someone at the track & that was cool...to him. He shared "the moment" with EVERYONE! Hollister, Carlsbad, Sand Hill..."Hey, you want a Sandwhich?" (Peanut butter & Honey: the original Moto-Energy Supplement!)

He was just a racer. An amazing racer. He was just a "dude". An amazing dude.

The recent MXoN "Top 25" rating stories got me thinking...Danny was the first "MC"....or "RC". Think about it. Remember him "Sailing" down the hill at the '81 Golden State on his YZ125? Or tripling UP the steps? He "tripled" before we called'em "Triples"! He was "Extreme" waaaaaaaaay before "Extreme Sports". Then there was the '82 MXdN/TdN; which, didn't surprise those of us that had been watching him for years. Hell, he made Rick Ryan look "Mellow"! Super-bikers? Check. USGP? Done.

When he passed away...I was told...by surprise...in a business setting...there were 3 of us talking "moto"...we were sitting outside a Dyno-room in an attached office when a friend & business associate says...

"Hey, did ya heat about Magoo? He passed away last-nite in his sleep."

I started tearing up. Felt kinda embarrassed; and, then...I didn't. These guys had just lost a good friend from Moto under pretty damn tragic circumstances, themselves, a few years earlier. I got quiet. They were look in' at me with expressions that said, "Huh. Look at that. What an impact. Nice. Hey, sorry...but. It's OK)

I got to reflect on some of this stuff with them & share a coupl'a of laughs & stories. They, too, found Danny to be awfully damn...

"Important".

Like I've said else-where...for our crowd...

#42 is always #1.

You guys are lucky..
I mean, many of you have been so lucky to meet him, talk to him or even race him.
To me he was and still is an Icon, kinda Steve McQueen.
I still remember his first picture on our most important italian magazine showing this young guy jumping a probably full gas third gear jump landing on a flat area.
Almost out of control!!
It was the "Bologna's motorshow".
Of course he was the only one doing that crazy jump!
Since that day I started to follow him but was not so easy in that period without internet..
Second time I saw him on a magazine was in this picture:

That was in Arsago Seprio on the finish line jump.
I had never seen so much strenght and elegance on a leap.
Than he raced in Europe and little by little internet world has helped me to prove that I was right.
At least my imagination was right:
He has been a wonderful rider.
So I met Danny only on a magazine paper or on a dvd or youtube video but the sign he left on me will rest forever.
Thank you Danny even today wich is a normal saturday before my tomorrow dirt ride.
Somebody said you also had some defects.
Well,of course you had,you are a man.
Un caro saluto Danny,
Giuliano

Danny..... 4 yrs ago today the motorcycling world lost one it's most unique characters. Nowadays you'd be a brand name. Few Names can go a long side greats like De Coster, Lackey, Hannah, Magoo... Winning alone doesn't get your name on the list. Not bad for a local show off........ The one thing everyone on the list does have in common...... HUGE BALLS.

It's hard to believe it's been 7 years. I'm just really happy that I was able to put together the memorial get together at his home track that so many of his friends were able to attend. In today's world of social media I know his legacy will go on for many, many years. His pictures are being shown every day around the entire world. Rest in Peace my friend, rest in peace.

I don't really have much to share on this topic. I was born in 1985, the year of Danny's injury, so I never got to see him ride. Just clips here and there. I went out and bought the Magoo DVD yesterday after I had heard of his passing and I'm glad I did. I can see why so many thought so much of him. He looked to have heart like no other and I wish I could have had the chance to watch him ride. He really turned things around after his rough times and I admire him for that. I can only imagine what it would be like to be in his situation and I think he did a good job to make the most of it. Even though I was'nt alive yet to see him race, he seems like a hero in my book. RIP
Sorry to bump. magoo was a great man I know this even though I was born in 2007 and never got to meet him . my dad worked on that dvd and was friends with Danny. I have heard so many stories over the years. and all of them were great.

Poking around here in the HOF. Man...time flies....

I was one of the ones fortunate enough to see Danny race. He was truly a sight to behold...win or lose or yard-sale....he made this sport the epitome of excitement.

I was there in the Rose bowl when he pulled the stunt in the photo below. Saw it from the stands, nearly the same angle. Back then, that was unheard of....the stadium went ape-shit. I had to look up who won that race....but this image was forever emblazoned in my mind.

Great thread...great memories. Magoo = legend.

I got to see him in 500 support class at Unadilla. Unbelievable.

Never met him but I would say it's fair to say, at his peak he was the GoaT.

No one ever went 1-1-1-1 at the Moto/Trophe de Nations. No one but Magoo.
