I don't agree with the practice, but I couldn't agree more with your comment.

Cheating in motorsport is, or has been, present at almost all levels of almost all disciplines.

In all types of professional racing you are only cheating if you get caught. Why do you think NASCAR cars are so closely inspected with templates before it’s approved for races?

Pro SX and National sound inspections can be very ahhhh creative to pass the sound tests for that little sticker.

You know there are cheater bikes in there too.

There is no amount of cheating available that would give me enough of an edge to win.

What exactly is being asked? Do people cheat (which seems to be what is of interest when you rhetorically ask (so people never cheat in moto?)? Of course they do. That is a separate question from: should people cheat? The prima facie answer is “no” given that cheating is wrong by definition (it’s gaining an unfair advantage and we generally take fairness to be desired). But what if everyone else is doing it? That muddies the waters since it’s then arguably not cheating; rather, it’s re-levelling the playing field. I suppose that you could say that if everyone cheats, then nobody does. Just don’t cheat on your wife - unless she says it’s ok, in which case it no longer seems like cheating.

Given the above, it would seem odd to say “it’s cheating but it’s fine”. Usually, if you think what you’re doing is fine, you think that ultimately it is justified such that it’s not really cheating. So, as a general question, there’s little one can say besides “no, it’s not ok if it’s actual cheating”. What we can do, however, is look at particular cases and analyze to determine whether it actually constitutes cheating. Even this is something about which we should remain sceptical given the human capacity for rationalization. If you want badly enough to justify something chances are you’ll be successful.

I’ll add one more thing. If you genuinely don’t care if it’s ok or not, you might be a psychopath.

Cheating isn’t right at all. With that said, it really depends on how you see things morally on whether you are ok with it or not.

I can’t cheat and feel good about myself whether I win or not, nor do I have a want to cheat. If I can’t win straight up, I sure as hell won’t cheat to do it.

Others can cheat, not think twice about it and feel just as good winning that way.

In most racing there are cheaters and there are losers- In mx, skill is most important so no amount of cheating will allow someone to have beaten Eli this past season.

Cheating is very prevalent in any type of drag racing.

So, are you saying that if you win, you must have cheated? That implies Tomac cheated. Is that really what you want to say?

I reckon cheating is what you do when you aren't as good as your competition. You either don't have the talent or aren't willing to work hard enough.

In my opinion...if you'll cheat at one thing...you'll cheat at anything and everything. I have no time or respect for those without integrity.

Even when I was racing all the time...I saw the cheating. I was discouraged and thought about quitting. In the end, I didn't place so much importance on finishing position. It was me, the bike and the track. Constantly pushing to improve myself. Let the chips fall where they may.

Should I give you a thumbs up because I totally agree, or should I give you a thumbs down because she broke your trust/ heart?

I personally have never cheated. I have rode the wrong practice on purpose a few times but cheating is not for me. I just find it funny some people act like no cheating is going on.

Racing for me has always been about challenging myself to see if I can accomplish something. Cheating would completely ruin the challenge. I would rather race with a handicap. Winning on an out of date bike feels really good.

Haven't read every response but I'm against overt cheating such as cutting the track or even sandbagging classes.

I am all for an aggressive interpretation of the rules. Classic racing story is famed NASCAR tuner Smokey Yunick getting around new regulations on fuel tank size. He went with the mandated size of fuel tank per NASCAR regulations but then ran a fuel line that was 2" in diameter and 11 feet long. The fuel line was large enough to hold an extra 5 gallons of fuel. He also used to chill his fuel to just above freezing which would contract the fuel and as it heated in the car it would expand so he in effect put more gallons of fuel in the car than the fuel tank could physically hold.

I love stories of guys who are aggressive with interpreting the rules, I have no time for cheaters.
