Why wasn’t Roczen really good in SX that year he dominated outdoors for rch?

I’m trying to remember why he wasn’t challenging for the title that year when he won like 20 motos outdoors.

I think tomac was still a little off due to his double shoulder surgery

Didn't he break or fracture his foot at one of the early rounds in SX? I remember he landed with his foot out and stubbed it pretty good. I don't know if that contributed to him not getting it done. But he sure rebounded outdoors!

He was challenging for that SX championship that year.

11 podiums (5x wins) and 2nd overall.

To put that in perspective with Eli, this season…

Eli this year had 11 podiums (seven wins) and 1st overall.

This had a lot to do with it. Slowed his momentum quite a bit for the series. He was still awesome, just not what he showed outdoors later that year.

Wasn't that the year he was leading in points but cased a triple it knocked him silly and somewhat out of the race? I think he crashed into a wall during practice or a race that year also.

It was the year before he crashed in to the wall mate.

He wasn't that far off, he basically had the same speed as Dungey that year, but a slow start to the season and also a couple of nights where he couldn't come through the pack after a bad start. Dungey was just really good and consistent in SX, always top 3 starts, only finishing once off the podium etc. So yeah, Roczen was good, but there is a reason Dungey is a legend in this sport. But.. I don't know what could have happened in SX if Kenny stayed on KTM.

I remember a lot of complaints about the RCH suzuki and also the beef with his dad and that team. They went to a lot of stock parts before the 2016 outdoor season right?

So.. in terms of wins and podiums I think 2016 was still his best year in SX, followed by the 2021 season.

I know this thread was posted to get Kenny shit talked on but you can basically describe Kenny as a modern version of prime KW but with the 2 outdoor titles KW should’ve had if not for racing the GOAT.

They have similar win totals, are always in the mix, and have style for days. I love watching Kenny ride, no matter if he wins, just as long as he’s not racing for 10th.

Same with Kevin. When he was in the top 5, I was watching. No matter what

People always complain about these, but I love threads like this!!
I often wonder similar things, and then when threads like this arise and everyone bring up these little points, I am enlightened.

Haven't read all the posts, but the one year he was leading I thought and then crashed on a big jump and hurt his back? Wasn't the same after.

That was brutal! The top guys make these jumps look super easy…until they are not…..I”m just amazed at how they can just forget about it & go right back at it…..KR is a certified world class MX/SX rider….the USA is very lucky to have had KR here for most of his career…..

1.) He was very good. Dungey was even gooder.
2.) Dungey probably would have bitten into Ken's dominance outdoors that year, too, had he been healthy.

It wasn’t at all.

Based on how slow he started and strong he finished it seems like he was nursing something possibly

He had a slow start and then made mistakes. I do believe this was the year they started on a modified bike and went back to stock bike and modded it from there. He also crashed out in Vegas and probably should have won had he had more patience, There was another that a mistake cost him against Dungey in a battle and This was Dungey at his best. You can’t have slow starts and make mistakes and expect to beat Dungey.

Yeah the stock clamps was the trick. Wasn't there a little drama between Ken and his dad and the team on bike set-up leading up to that?

Agree with the results angle of the comparison, but I’d really like to see KR develop the laid back and appreciative attitude that KW has. KR has absolutely earned respect, he’s on the list as an all time great, I’d just like to see him enjoy the last few years of his amazing career.

Because he always throws away a race in SX. He’s a better outdoor rider it’s not hard to figure out and he’s said the same. Why isn’t J Mart a 2 time SX 250 champ?

100 percent agree. I think if Kenny wants to continue to race there is a really cool path there for him. Same for guys like Marv. I want to see everyone ride until they are 35-38 like Brayton and Reed did. Nothing changes their early career accomplishments, they get to continue to make money, and we get to watch them longer.

As much as I love Ricky, RV, Dunge, I really wish we could have seen them all race another 5 years no matter the results. It would’ve helped grow this sport and probably left them happier in the long run. I know for a fact none of us would’ve hated more each of them. Same for guys like Bradshaw, JSR, etc.

RD5 was simply in Beast Mode that seasaon. He was fast and agreesive the whole entire time. Really seemed to gel with that 15 KTM 450.

He had a shitty start to the season but other than that wasn't so bad. Dungey was just a lot better

I think that was 2015, the first race of the outdoors he labored around outside of the top 5, had people wondering if he was going to drop out of the series, then suddenly got better. But Eli was peak Eli and Dungey was renewed.

Ken is was and will always be one bad dude. To me though the practice crash back in 2015 is where the fork in the road was. After that it seemed to have just been more crashes, injurys and health issues holding him back from his true dominant form.
