Bob would win.

If a rider could go unbelieveably fast on an overweight, air cooled, poorly suspended, and poorly handling bike that they would break in half by pushing the envelope to far, then they could certainly rip on the newer machines.

You don't think Barnett could put his head down and will himself to win on a 250F?

You don't think Baily and Glover would have the same legendary rivalry on modern 450 bikes?

If you don't think hannah could win on comparable equipment under any circumstancs through shear will you are nuts.

As far as training, yeah, there would be a learning curve to utilize advancements in conditioning,

But imagine flipping it where riders of today had to train and travel like those guys did.

Going from event to event in a box van. Training on the road. Finding whatever beat out unprepped practice track you could find in flyover country. Running in the middle of the day and having your trainer/mechanic pick you up 5 miles down the road.

Hell, put modern guys out there for 45+2, and with no blue flags and let's see how they do.

as far as a comparison of Hannah, and Barcia, there is none.

Hannah didn't go around just knocking the crap out of anybody that tried to pass him.

He was a little out of control sometimes, but I don't remember him just going around taking people out.

Howerton hit him first and it was on.

Bowen hit him first and it was on.

Decoster got a little aggressive with him, and it was on.

I saw him destroy stacked National fields with 45 minute motos. I’m pretty sure he would have no problem winning if he was racing in this era.

So how would the current crop do against Bob on the older bikes? I am sure Hannah would be more competitive on the new bikes that the new guys on the older bikes.

Hannah was a champion, he rode to win. Not always the fastest, but often the fastest to the finish line. Carmichael very similar. They just do what is necessary to win. No excuses. Champions are Champions.

Motocross is a mental game. Part of that mentality is "how fast is 'fast?'" Hannah is amazing, he definitely has "it," and he has the heart of a champion. But if you time-traveled him from 1978 to today, gave him a 450 and all the practice time he needed, then dropped him into the field, he'd realize that the speeds of the sport have changed dramatically. The constant flow of innovation and human tendency to "up the game" have made this a different sport.

He would not have a problem with fitness, intimidation, or belief in himself, but the speed of competition has accelerated far beyond what the pros were doing in the '70s. It would take him a few races before he understood how far he really had to twist that throttle.

The speed is faster now because of the bikes, nothing more. Same as the speed increased from 1970 to 1980 but Hannah could still win and did. Last win was in 1985 I think.
It would take him a few races, though.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Hannah's last win at the 1987 MXdN? (On a stinkin' 125????!Woohoo )

I don’t know if what Hannah did could be replicated today. He didn’t start racing until he was 16, and turned pro very shortly after.

But imo, talent is talent, and a champion is a champion no matter the era. He had more heart and desire then 99% of riders from any era, and that’s what makes a champion a champion, in any era.

Bob dominates any podium speech in any era!

He would have had his own all natural trophy girls - monster be dammed!!!

Larry Maiers would be his historical spokesman!

The original MAGA racer...

I used to hang out with Tony D and practice with him some. He was a very nice guy. Not the personality type you think would be a three-time champ. Total opposite of Hannah yet they were great friends. Super smooth rider.

Me too! Love them both. Hannah is very cool...you just have to understand his personality. People who say he was a jerk don't know him. He is not at all.

Bob won a SX event on a production bike against works bikes, then they raffled it off.
You won't see that ever again.

While were debating whether Bob could hang with todays guys (which is laughable) I just
want to note that I believe this pic is from the 78 Trans Am at Red Bud. It was the cover of the program in 79. I believe That's an honest to god factory Yamaha open bike and If I recall the displacement was like 380cc or something. It was trick Smile

This, absolutely. People who are comparing him to Barcia never saw him race. Bob is very brash in his way of talking, but on the track he was just a super fast guy who usually got bad starts. He’d come through the pack but with his speed he didn’t have to ride dirty.

Aside from fitness, talent, and desire to win, Bob had it all ….. personality, podium brass, and was signing autographs long after most left. That is greatness on top of speed that would carry over into any decade.

Hannah had the raw talent of somebody like K-dub... the training drive of Tomac... the pure speed of someone like RC.... and wayyyy more attitude than Dumb Dumb....

Hannah would be an absolute menace today....
