I've half expected Yamaha to do a Heritage (or whatever they'd call it) edition of the WRs, in IT blue.

Any shade of Blue is OK by me - since the 70s, with my own personal prototype BMX / DH / MTB frames, I've rattle canned them Ford Blaze Blue. Wasn't it the colour they did some of their engine blocks in? Anyway, it's the spray can that was to hand on the bench, in 72 /73, and I've stuck with that tradition ever since. I never do that colour for my riders though, it's all Mine...... Whistling

Also Star have so much more freedom than other race teams as in suspension and different components they can utilise, unlike teams like factory KTM who have a lot more constraints on what they can run. I think Yamaha and Honda will still be the leaders of the pack next season. Yamahas patent on the reverse cylinder engine has them ahead of all other OEMs in the engine department so until that patent expires and the rest of the crowd can do the same they have a huge advantage. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have done they are definitely a great bike!

So very far away from having a patent on the reversed cylinder head.
Patents like that are just design patents and won’t stop anyone from building a similar bike to the Yami.
I don’t think Yamaha has a big advantage over the others. Their straight intake is perfectly suited for EFI, yes. However, Honda’s layout has the same straight intake and KTM‘s injector design achieves pretty comparable results.
Or which huge advantage do you mean?

Honda has a downdraft style intake but it clearly is not as direct or close to the same angle. The shock/seat eventually become limiting factors in the conventional design.

The 2009 yz450f was probably the best bike I have ever owned. turning, suspension, power, and the durability most of all. It looked great too. I think maybe... the honda looked better but it was a great looking bike. I had the white/red one, it was better than the blue IMO.

The white plastic and black rims, what a sexy bike.
Even the stock shroud graphics looked great.

That’s exactly the point of the newer generation of CRF frames: the shock tower is lower so that the intake can be routed over it. The YZFs and CRFs intake setup and injector location are actually pretty similar now.

Those images do look close. Thanks for the side by side. My previous statement was based on what Brad Hoffman at Star said, in reference to the patent. So obviously he is talking as a Yamaha guy, but the Honda is a lot closer than I expected, after seeing those images that you posted.

You’re pic shows the 250f. That engine seems to have an even steeper intake.

I’m absolutely not going to buy one but I still can’t wait to see it lol.

Yamaha has done a very very good job hiding this stuff. I bet KTM is taking notes considering how much their FE’s leaked😂
