(Full Interview Added): Cliff Notes from Feld / MX Sports Interview about SuperMotocross Championship

8/2/2022 3:12pm
All this talk of this new combined championship for me means if you only race one series you shouldn't be able to win the "SuperMotocross" championship at the end. Or else what's the point of it.

So this means the MXDN is back like it was before? Our guys are going to have a 5-7 weeks off of MX before the race?

Well, maybe that's where sport becomes product, as all professionals sports are - product. No way you eliminate top talent from the opportunity to compete. Maybe incentivize the money to be all in.

I sure hope they schedule this so that there are regular recovery breaks for the riders/teams. Bye weeks every 4th round or something. Super/Motocross is a meatgrinder as it is and everyone is injured at some point during the year. 31 events for elite athletes is a lot. What other sport has this type of risk/consequence and does 31 events a year? American Football is just as brutal and they do less than 20 with bye weeks and a long off season.

I'm looking forward to see the payout for 1st thru 20th for each event type. Pay the guys who put their @sses on the line every time the gate drops.

ML, I haven’t seen anything discussed as far as a rider that splits classes. For example it seems likely Jett is riding 450 outdoors next year. Is this enough to keep him 250 year round? I would assume his points wouldn’t combine if he was running 250 sx and 450 mx?
I'm not sure yet if they even know how that'll work. I don't think they'll let points crossover. So he either has to score enough points in 450 outdoors only to get into the 450 playoffs or enough points in 250 East coast Supercross to qualify for the 250 playoff championship.

Even if they did combine it would be a lot less than riders that race a full season of 450....and then you have the Justin Cooper situation....some interesting decisions will have to be made...

Thanks for the coverage, ML. I'm looking forward to this, and I'm glad the SX and MX championships will be stand-alone titles without getting the complexities of a "chase" added to them.

Why no mention from DC in anything? He’s been the face of MX Sports for two decades.

Is he taking a step back now?

I was thinking the same thing about jett.
Also I think this means eli races the full season as he said in a interview he is sx only unless something major changes. I believe he was eluding to this.
So I believe he will have a crack at the supermoto title then retire.

My opinion...Eli didn't know about this when I last asked...

What he meant by changes is he wants less races. Even if there's a ton of money involved, he seems at his end in terms of wanting to do full seasons. I'd say it's very unlikely he does Nationals next year...regardless of today's announcement.

Because he is busy at LLs this week. I am sure he will talk about it when LLs is over.

The money needs to be biased towards the riders at the back, not the Pros, I know it's not that simple, but it needs to change.

DC was supposed to be on the interview but lost his voice today, so Carrie did it with us instead.

Interesting he’s not mentioned anywhere in the press release. No quote. No comment.

He is MX Sports.

You know as well as I do these press releases are carefully crafted weeks in advance.

Just a curiosity that he isn’t in the Official press release.

Probably doesn’t mean anything. Or means everything. Or somewhere in between.

I'm curious how the points would play out if Jett races opposite coast on a 450? Will his 250 SX points count towards the overall series, or will it be 450 only since he's racing a 450 outdoors? Sounds like it's going to have some growing pains the first full year, but I'm sure they'll get it figured out pretty quickly and it'll be a cool series.

If they're going to create an alliance to promote SX/MX as one, the riders should race both series to qualify for the 3 round championship.
So, Maverick is a “Hardass”?

Nice!

So let me get this straight. You being your points from both series. The top 22 in each displacement get to advance to the two playoff rounds. Then a final. Is there a points reset? Or why call it playoff rounds. Its just 3 rounds.

So does the 250 SX become a "normal" class like MX? Otherwise the SuperMotocross (SMX?) championship seems to eliminate/disenfranchise the folks like Justin and Colt that pointed out of 250SX.

I agree!
Was never a fan of a playoff system within the current series but this new alliance solves that and with the increased purses and single streaming contract I'm in!....now that the ball is in WSX's court it will be interesting to see what their play will be as it is evident that with the manufacturers tied into the SMX deal their pool of riders just got a lot smaller and will be far from world championship caliber...

Not entirely true. Jett racing only 7 rounds of sx still would of finished 8th in 450 points for the year.

I sure hope that 250 points don't count towards the 450 standings.

Another fresh account with another shit take. Never realized shit posting could be an addiction but this board has proven otherwise.

Since this new format has quite a bit of the old ‘Grand National’ vibe, I actually do wish that they’d overlap the indoor and outdoor schedules just a bit. I always thought that the Grand National series was fantastic. Road races, flat tracks, TTs, etc., mixed up throughout the year. Specialists may have won their share of races, but the guys winning titles had to be at least decent at everything.

1. The riders are already very unhappy with the schedule being to full. RV told me that he had always the feeling to be stuck between a rock and a hard place because you are done with SX and outdoors is there. Luckily they had some time off between outdoors and SX... Now they fill that place up too?! Can imagine they are jumping from joy (not).

2. Is Infront read the Luongo family IN, in this all? Because Supermotocross was a brand name of them and I can't imagine they gave it away for two dime and an apple.

3. Neither Feld or MX Sports are working with the FIM, so how can this be a world championship? So I go back towards my second question, Is Luongo, former Youthstream now Infront Moto in to this?

4. It feels a bit like acting in panic. Like you tell a girl you leave her for some one else (Ken Roczen, Eli Tomac, Dean Wilson...) and she looks at you and says: "Don't forget what you are leaving behind", and she start kissing you, undressing herself and you in just seconds. You know like she only did after that first date and when you bought her that new car. You're hesitating to leave but you know everything is going to stay the same... Here I feel that is the case too. Riders will still be strangled in a very busy double season, only SX or MX teams will ask themselves where the hell they need to find those sponsors to do both series to give their rider a better chance in the playoff...

I'm curios; is the 250 SuperMotocross Championship considered a regional or national championship?

So only Europeans can label something as a world championship in your mind? They don't need the FIM.
