Why does "the sport" need to pay more attention to riders getting hooked on pills? I hate when people spew that nonsense. It's not "the sports" responsibility. Nico is a grown man, it's his own damn responsibility to care for himself. It's the sports responsibility to ensure that no rider is using pills or whatever to gain an unfair advantage. That's it.

If I become a junky and my employer finds out I'm using banned controlled substances I would most likely get suspended for the first violation. If it happens again, I would be fired. They have NO obligation to coddle me or intervene when I fall on my ass.

I apologize for coming off like as ass, but just read what you wrote and actually think long and hard about it. Take into consideration how it is absolutely 100% impossible for "the sport" to intervene in any way, shape or form other than drug testing them and suspending them. Our sport is not big enough to be able to send riders to rehab or counseling and quite frankly it's not their responsibility.

Take responsibility for his own actions, lean on family and friends for support, enter rehab or whatever he's got to do to get clean. That's what needs done. "The sport" doesn't owe him anything just because he can ride a dirt bike really well.
You know, man...you're pretty much right on target. Take it from a guy like me who's been clean/sober 15-years last month...Nico Izzi will ONLY GET/STAY CLEAN & SOBER IF HE WANTS IT MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN HIS LIFE, MORE THAN RACING,MORE THAN FAMILY, MORE THAN HIS DAUGHTER & MORE THAN THE MONEY.

If Nico wants to get & stay clean for any other reason than himself...he'll get high again, that is a 100% guarantee. And, no...the racing community doesn't owe Nico shit. He needs to humble himself, walk in the front door of a 6-month residential treatment facility, and learn how to deal with life instead of having numbing himself with opiates.

All this is IF Nico's problem is using.

This sport needs to pay more attention to the issue of riders getting injured and hooked on pills. It is well documented with Austin and Izzi.
Izzi was on his way to the top until he had to step off his Suzuki in Supercross and broke his heels. He said the team never even got in touch with him in the hospital- he had to call DeCoster. That might be a sign of how riders are tossed away and left to fend for themselves.

There is a nation wide epidemic of opioid addiction.
It usually follows a prescription from a doctor for pain following a sugery or injury. Mx obviously is filled with injuries, and prescriptions for pain. Does mx owe anything to Nico? Shoot, hell if I know. I'm not even sure he has or had a problem with this. But I've been in the ICU a number of times, and had the prescriptions, and I can't believe that the mx community (DC, VITAL, TRANSWORLD, MXA, ETC.) haven't covered this for the good of unsuspecting mx injured riders. This medication takes over. I plead with the prior mentioned to address this problem.

Looks like he's going to be in South Alabama at the end of the month if anyone wants to take a class.

I went to the doctor a year ago for a bad case of poison oak(thought I could treat it myself) and they gave a steroid shot, cream, and a perscription for 30 Vicodin.....with 2 refills......for poison oak. I couldn't believe it but took them anyways to have in case of emergency. Once a few people found out I had them I was getting offered $6 a piece for them. I can imagine if I went in for a legitimate reason to need them what they would've given me. Crazy. They are fun and can see how people get addicted quick.

This shit has gotten the better of many racers. Hopefully one day they find a better alternative.

They secretly stopped basing hospital reimbursements on subjective pain control, so that's a start. It was part of the Affordable Care Act and it basically kick started the opioid epidemic

I think the Sackler family and their company Purdue Pharmaceuticals with their lying sales force has everything to do with the opioid crisis, but you know what they say about opinions.

Three biggest lies 1) I will call you right back 2) Checks in the mail 3) Affordable Care Act replacement plan will be here in 2.5 weeks and it is PERFECT

Good to see Izzi is back doing motos. As a racer, I’ll never shit on someone that ends up in a bind with pain pills. All it takes is a few injuries happening in a row and all of a sudden you’re in a pickle without realizing.

I broke my femur in 1998, and thinking back on it the amount of pills they gave to a 13 year old was unreal.

I don’t think it’s an either/or.

-Big Pharma (especially Pfizer and their sales folks)

-Government critters in the pocket of said companies, looking the other way, until they can’t, then fining drug companies an amount that sounds big to citizens, yet only amounts to a few weeks’ profit for the company.

-Doctors who handed out pills like chiclets, either due to kickbacks or ego of “knowing how to prescribe off label” because “I’m a doctor.”

-a society that wants a pill to fix things every time they visit a doctor (not talking severe pain, I’m talking whiny people who have a mild discomfort and see a doctor demanding they be prescribed “something,” lest they feel their doctor visit cheated them somehow).

The first three are in view plain as day in Pfizer’s failed pain meds that caused nasty side affects like skin falling off. Pfizer only got a narrow FDA approval due to some study results. They then sent an aggressive sales team out, paying doctors to be “consultants” and encouraging off-label prescriptions. The government ultimately touted a 2.3 billion dollar fine as if it were really sending a message-Pfizer paid it in one wire transfer and moved on.

Just remember-there’s no money for big pharma or their paid-for politicians in a healthy America…

Just remember, Dr. 's work for the patient, insurance co really, so patient wants script, Dr. wants happy patient to go away and worse gets ding'd by insurance co if patient comes back, because after all Dr. needs to help patient get better, so Dr writes script, patient comes back, Dr says no, patient goes to new Dr...rinse and repeat. Don't blame Dr.'s or pharma for that matter, blame CMS (Medicare) and insurance companies. Remember, Dr.'s are doing a job too and need to run a business. When insurance pays them to make patients go away, they will do what the customer (insurance co) wants...and now back to the moto convo...that Swap series looks pretty cool with current and former racers.

Thanks for the Pfizer information as I didn't know they were part of this. Fines mean nothing to billionaires, so incarceration is the only real deterrent. The pendulum has swung so far in the other direction that people are suffering now with such low quantity of painkillers for post-surgery. Ohio's dipshit governor thinks people should just tough it out with their pain.

For everyone's sake, I hope Nico Izzi never returns to our sport. Guy had a gazillion 2nd chances and burned too many people.

I don’t completely disagree, but I would also point out that there should be a big difference between a businessperson who sells things to people and one who treats people. The latter took an oath to do no harm. They can’t (or at least shouldn’t) be able to claim “because profits” in their rationale for prescribing unnecessary pills and/or unnecessary quantities.

Yes, I also realize this is rather idyllic and ignores the reality that they have to stay in business, or we don’t have doctors anymore. But there must be a balance somewhere.

I don’t want to hijack this thread totally but I will leave this last comment on scripts, big pharma etc-disclaimer I am in healthcare on the sales end for the past 25 years-never sold pharma just OR based implants-it is fairly accepted that reps don’t sell Dr’s on anything. Dr’s sell Dr’s and peer acceptance is the biggest influencer of all. Most MD’s are the worst sheep you’ve ever seen. None will act without knowing others are too. Pharma marketing and Dr’s taking huge consulting fees to speak at conferences is really an issue that has been curbed significantly and again, just look to insurance companies and frankly factory medical care i.e. Kaiser, Intermountain Health, name your local hospital “system”. Again my apologies for the hijack.

With how our “Justice” system works he could easily be out by now on good behavior. I hope he took the time to deal with his problems and is riding moto for fun.

He was paroled 6/27/22, cannot leave the State of Michigan without permission from his parole officer, and likely still has an active warrant in California.

What are the name of the Pfizer drugs you are talking about causing skin issues?
I’ll have to check. It was on an episode of the show American Greed. One was Celebrex and the other was something similar. One was Pfizer’s and the other was from another company that I believe Pfizer bought.

Essentially, study data caused concern. FDA told Pfizer approval was limited to specific issue treatment (as I recall, RA and something else). Pfizer sent the sales team out with (allegedly) marching orders to sell it however necessary including encouraging doctors to prescribe off-label (ie for conditions other than what it was approved for). Numerous doctors received healthy “consulting fees” to attend conferences and help sell the product. Patients began having blisters, rashes, and skin molting like a reptile.along the way, a whistleblower was fired for what sounded like trumped up allegations of theft, which his peers said never happened and wouldn’t have been in character for him (straight laced, high integrity). Ultimately the government fined them 2.3 billion which Pfizer paid in one lump.
