Thoughts?

Right now, down voters aren't shown and only up voters are. Should it change for both to be public?

Or, should the whole thing be scrapped?

I’ve never understood why you can proudly be an upvoter but hide and downvote. If you want to downvote be proud lol

Or, third and best choice, should you leave things just the way they are?

I just think it’s funny how irate some people get when they see their comments get downvotes. It’s not that deep lol.

That's because people are actually sending mails to get their downvoters name and adress so they can get after them and kill'em.

Option 3 - Keep things as is. Only snowflakes care about getting downvoted.

I'm actually indifferent at this point. Most often you already know who the down voters are outside of some random troll or kids

It's fine the way it is, if someone is so emotionally fragile they can't handle that someone disagrees with their opinion, they definitely don't need to know their identity. It allows you to go "hey, not everyone agrees with that" without instigating an argument. Keep it the way it is or scrap it.

More importantly, when are things transitioning to the new site?

Expose the cowards. I want people to know I dont like their post. Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things. And dont make the votes merged. I hate that about Reddit. I want to see the ratio.

I appreciate the honesty, ha!

I think we have some serious serial down voters here who might be swayed away from just clicking down vote on everything if it's visible. I don't think it would eliminate much down votes overall though. Like in J. Sloan's case, who just often posts unpopular opinions so he'll get downvotes no matter what. It just might decrease the serial ones a bit. Also might make users reflect more on what they say if they visually see who is downvoting them. Or it might do nothing at all.

Due to the turmoil in the world and a bit of how outdoors streaming has begun, things are a little rough around here right now. But it's hard for me to just click people because they're being pissy and not directly breaking rules. Then we start trending towards the heavy-handed moderation I don't want to be a part of. In the same breath though, it can't just continue. So just kicking the can around on how we improve things.

Best to leave it like it is and keep the peace.

Some a$$holes have a problem and downvote nearly everything I post - I dont want to know who they are

I'll get an update but I know MTB is going live with the update anytime now. They're sorta the test to see how it goes and hopefully we transition a few weeks following.

Showing downvoters names won't change much, if anything it might just create more animosity and arguments. At first I didn't like the whole voting thing but it's actually grown on me. I think if you can't leave it as it is then just scrap it altogether like it used to be.

I'm not sure it helps, makes things feel a little more social media / approval seeking. If the buttons are here, then people should be willing to stand by them though. Anonymous down votes, when up votes are visible, is a strange situation. It's like the old "don't say anything about someone you wouldn't say to their face", which is golden advice.

That said, and totally contradictory, while I don't use the down vote button much unless something is just plain retarded or argumentative, I do like giving props to people when smart / funny / knowledgeable stuff comes out which helps me or the general discussion.

Keep it as is. No need to stir things up anymore than it is…. Or just get rid of it altogether as a last resort.

Keep it as it is. I sense that the only people who want to see the downvotes are the ones that want to try and waste energy changing opinions.

Arguing on an online forum?!?! What a terrible thing. Most people wouldn’t actually share their disapproval in person the way they do on here. Keyboard warriors

An anonymous downvote is like a sucker punch.

I upvote a lot of stuff, but I’m careful about downvoting. I‘d love to see my name attached to a downvote much more than to an upvote.

A post wishing someone's kid happy birthday gets a bunch of downvotes so how can you take any of them seriously anyway.

Could go the older Facebook route and just have up votes? Up votes are positive, anonymously shitting on each other isn't.

ML512,

Neither. Make the BOTH anonymous. This is the only way to get non biased data. For example, when someone posts something controversial and the vital pitch forks come out, there are a lot of people who want to agree with the controversial post but don't want to be associated with the controversial topic. So you are losing upvotes in this case.

This is why the results from a POLL and regular post are completely different.

So make both anonymous just like a poll if you want accurate data. Otherwise, the current system just invites negativity.

In my opinion down-votes suck, especially hidden down-votes. There's enough negativity in the world, why not make it only up-votes and if you want to down-vote something do it with a reply.

I’m definitely of the belief that downvotes are childish at best. They scroll through a post and click it without blinking. But they sure as hell won’t engage. Reminds me of a kid who stands behind someone else throwing punches.

The best possible option would be anonymous upvotes only, followed by both anonymous up and down votes.

The way it's setup right now is so whacked....
