What do you make of the way they force abled men into the military? Personally I think it is every mans duty, and it would be unthinkable to flee, even with family. But that is easy for us to say from a safe distance… quite interesting, sort of like what we heard from ww2 Stalingrad and Karkiv, no?
Likely people with nothing to fight for (socialists / communists / those that rely on the govt) will flee. Those that have sometning to protect that they’ve built on their own will stay to the death to defend it.
I have 2 kids under 4 and the thought of saying goodbye to them and going into battle under these circumstances is so difficult, much harder than the thought of leaving just my wife to fight.
My brother in law's 90 year old grandfather lives near the Romanian border, he talks with him almost daily, he said last night grandpa got drunk and listened to music. Grandpa didn't come to his recent wedding in the US because with all the restriction and stuff he didn't know if he could make it to the US and back. He said he wanted to spend the rest of his time where he lived surrounded by his friends. This was before the invasion. My heart sinks that his remaining time will be amid this.
Poor man, lived through the entire Soviet era, only to see this happen at the end of his lifetime. I can´t imagine the anger they must feel...
NATO promised Russia not to expand it's (NATO's) boarders and has repeatedly broken that promise.
The US spent billions influencing Ukrainian politics and eventually the US/NATO facilitated the coup in 2014 changing the Ukraine government from a pro-Russian one to a pro-European/West one.
From what I understand, the regions that want to separate from the Ukraine are primarily of Russian ethnicity and speak Russian.
Under the USSR, millions in the Ukraine starved due to their food being stolen from the USSR (communism isn't a very good economic system and tends to produce poverty and famine).
Basically a lot of history and politics going on there. Sad to see war being the result, but things like coups and broken promises can lead to war. No innocent parties at this point as far as I can tell.
5 billion US$ spent meddling in Ukrainian politics:
