KLRs I assume?

One of those, if I'm honest, fits the bill for me - the model with panniers is within my price range, and, it's just that nice level above a true 'Doof Doofer', such as a Himalayan. Though, there's rumored to be a (very different to the 400cc Hima) Watercooled 450 coming, in various Indian websites, that usually get it right.

And, I've got an entire Kayaba front end from my CR to put on the KLR, and I'm sure I can make up a rear shock to give it a leg up on the most criticized part of the new KLRs.

You do Desert, TG? So I'm sure you are familiar with the 'BRP'. I've always put forward a BRP (XR650R), as they are so lovingly called by owners of them, as being a fantastic basis for a more 'spritely' 650 ADVer from Honda. Put that 700cc Electric Start engine from their quads in the 650s alloy chassis, with mods for a bit of carrying capacity, and there'd be a worthy Honda rival for the KTM690 - KTHusky 701. But, it will never happen...Sad

Here’s what i think is gonna happen. Hewitt will run the team. Scuba who just left husky and moving to the south east aka where triumph head quarters are. Then they hire a good 250 rider. Wonder if any other husky employees leave or if they take people from star since there already on the east

Triumph MXer chased me for a couple laps last month. They have been out for a while now. It was fast and the kid looked comfortable. But the 74 MX 360 took him in the end.

Call me old fashioned. I hate the idea of electric, it is the engines and the sound that gives us our sport. On the flip side, I know times are changing and for trails etc I think electric is awesome.

As he ( the presenter, and other MC Talking Heads and Journos are saying) it looks to be the first fruits of Triumphs and Bajaj's deals / contracts.

People, This is where Big Money is to be made.

The Small, Rough Roads and Commuter bike sales. A successful entry into this side of the market, means Thousands upon Thousands of bike sales. The Economies of Scale make for Big Profits. And, in the Real, Mass Sales markets for Motorcycles today, not the 'West'. Most here, just can't seem to grasp the size of the sales in Asia, India / East Asia, Africa and South America. And the potential for growth in those markets. And, if just a few people in those markets, get the bug for More from a Motorcycle, sales of our types ( competition bikes ) of Toys, could get a hell of a boost.

I've done the 'Land Yacht' thing, and I get, each year to do some serious mileage on a mates much modified HP2 (not for the last 2 years, what with 'things', but, this year, hopefully) and that thing, is just Bloody Fantastic. But, ridiculous. But now, for my own use / ownership / moth filled wallet, I want a middle / below middle capacity 'Doof Doof' bike for trips. And this possible / probable Triumph, might fit the bill, though the 'to come' 500??cc KTM Twin might be more what I want.

Anyway, this 'Doof Doof' bike will probably upset a few here, but WTFC............

Still, awaiting real news on the 'real' (as many would say) Dirt Bikes from Triumph, Cripes it was only a few months ago they were mooted to be coming into existence, but from many criticisms, you'd think it was years.

Great post.

Just picked up a coupl'a new 650s that fit the "Not quite a Land Yacht" segment that I really wanted for exploring The Eastern Sierras and Baja. I've convinced a few friends, via some fun rides, that this new "smaller ADV/Big Enduro" approach works.

Triumph has a pretty good history of exploring and excelling in the various segments they've gone in to. I wish them the best of luck and look forward to seeing them at the races.
Just raced the BRP at last-year's Vegas to Reno! (We won Over 50)

My KLR's are the Adventure model with the bags, lights and a little extra protection. They're a blast to ride and I actually enjoy wrangling them on single-track. They've got great range and once I get a Cogent shock and fork kit in'em, they'll be capable of a bit 'better pace' off-road.

I might be the only one here that agrees with you. While a new bike would be cool, this is the worst time and market for one. This is not an industry running rampant with demand. An overcrowded market can be very bad for ALL manufacturers and thus customers. Splitting sales further is only going to reduce profits and thus reinvestment. So we get less innovation and potentially even the demise of an existing manufacturer. In this case, I see Triumph ultimately pulling the plug. The only question is how much time and money they burn before doing so. I think this is a horrendous decision by Triumph management.
Quite possibly the most misinformed post I've ever seen.

Have you seen new dirt bikes languishing in showrooms with huge markdowns? No, you haven't because since COVID the industry's biggest problem is lack of stock in anything. Used bike prices are through the roof.

This is the best time since the early 70's boom for a manufacturer to jump into dirt bike manufacturing.

Correct. Maybe if he got out a little bit more and opened his eyes he maybe would be not so much a miserable bear

Everything being sold out is awesome. Going to be some good used bike deals in a year or two and hopefully if 1/3 of the Covid new comers stay in it we should be good for quite a few years for all things moto.

Were you the only XR650R at V2R? Think I saw the bike at contingency. Prepping my XRR for SS300 this year. It's still a phenomenal bike for this type of racing despite being 20 years old.

I mentioned in an earlier post the possibility that Triumph my be working on a series of electric off road bikes given the climate and trends that are apparent these days. To me it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to introduce another gasoline powered bike into a technology that is getting so heavily pushed against. We all know that electric off-road bikes are coming but with the exception of KTM all of the companies that are or have put out electric off-road bikes are small and not all that well established, thus apt to fail just as Alta did.
To lend credence to my "educated guess" Triumph just released there newest prototype motorcycle, the TE-1, which is an electric model shown below. Also you will find a link to a Cycle World article about this venture below too. This shows that they are serious about electric motorcycles and common sense would lead me to believe that is the direction that their off-road bikes are headed. Remember, you heard it here first!
Oh, also regarding projected horsepower, Triumph is claiming 174 BHP on the prototype model below!

I think we were the only one at V2R last year. The one we raced is really well prepped and runs like a Swiss Watch.

It's not like developing a gas off road bike now isn't going to help them develop an electric one down the line. Triumph knows how to build a motorcycle. I hope we see them at A1 '23 with a 1 year works exemption if they don't have a homologated production bike by then.

Why waste time developing a new gas bike, unless they chose to power it with an existing engine (meaning the engine from another manufacturer) if they intend on going electric? If they come out with a new gas powered off-road bike, they'll be at the tail end of a well established market. If they come out with a competitive e-bike, they can position themselves as a leader in a new field that the world is heading towards...
They've already been talking to the AMA and Feld. The change is coming, I'm just not sure when.

Triumph want to use racing as a key marketing tool for their product. So you build whatever is being raced and obviously Triumph feels the 450s will be around for a while yet. And what spec electric bike do you build? How is that going to be regulated. Triumph would've started this project years ago too.

Motorsport also exist off the back of paying fans as well. I am still not convinced that many motorsports trust that electric racing can generate big money from hosting fees and/or ticket sales, not yet anyway. If the biggest cheer in SX is for a guy making a main on a 125, then you don't have to be a genius to see why championship organisers are concerned about removing the sound entirely.

Why waste time developing a new gas bike? Why did KTM develop and introduce an all-new bike? The expected life cycle of the product exceeds the expected time for widespread electric adoption.

It's admirable, the loyalty some of you have to what is quickly becoming our collective romantic past, but regardless, the future isn't nearly as curious about who will debut the LAST big-selling 250 or 450 motocrosser as they are about who will debut the FIRST big-selling electric motocrosser. The buzz of any new ICE bike, regardless who makes it (Triumph or whoever), will be quickly swallowed up by the buzz of what's coming NEXT. Triumph can build whatever the heck they want to, they're a company run by grown ups, after all, but if the bike they're building makes a lot of noise and has valves and/or a piston, it's a just another dinosaur wondering what that giant flaming rock in the sky is.

Let me put it this way: if you were given a choice between reading a glossy, beautifully made, well-written, well laid out, newspaper that had last month's news in it, or a simple black-and-white newspaper that had today's news - which would you choose to read?*

*It's a trick question: nobody reads newspapers anymore. No matter how good they were or weren't, they're all relics of the past now, seemingly overnight, and that is precisely my point. Good luck, Triumph.

Anybody catch the Pulp show this week/Moto 60 show? Steve kind of teased that Zacho had been asked to ride a 250 outdoors (Monday's pulp show) and that the Triumph race team would be 250 only to start with Bobby Hewitt (spelling) Steve Westfall, and Zacho involved (Moto 60 show). Pretty cool if any of that is the case!

Yes, that's right, I'm just a silly dreamer and YOU have a handle on the future. There's just one problem with that: reality. I'm a car nut as well as a bike nut, and my favorite show to watch is the one called, "Auto Mundial." They preview all the planned new vehicles as well as critiquing the latest offerings, and all you have to do is watch that show to understand the wave that's coming. Right or wrong, it's coming. You're like that dude who hears of a gargantuan volcanic eruption a few miles from shore, who then looks out the window of his beach house and says, "The waves looks fine to me, they must all be wrong" Just because it's not tomorrow yet doesn't mean tomorrow isn't coming.

For the longest time, guys on here would breathlessly speculate as to whether Suzuki or Kawi or Honda might go back to building two-strokes. They even said Triumph should build one. Funny, isn't it, how all that speculation suddenly stopped once the Stark Varg broke cover? Denial is a precious thing, for it offers such lovely comfort to those averse to change - this I understand - but ya gotta know when to wake up and smell the coffee.

Don't know if it's already been noted but I was on Googlemaps planning a trip and now under "services" it shows EV charging stations along routes. A lot of them Tesla but others include Charge America, Charge Point, Sema Connect and EVgo. From my house to Indy there were around a dozen charge stations. Those ain't just unicorn farts!

Your tax dollars at work no doubt.

Another item you might want to take note of:

Ford sez Full speed ahead with EVs!

No one is denying the market will change, but you are acting like you know 100% what it's going to be.

The FIA set up a WMSC Electric Motorsport committee to set out regulations for electric racing..... in 1990. It took another 25 years before anything of merit actually happened on that front.

In 2001 the FIA announced karting was going 4-stroke for its classes because the wave was upon us. Guess what? We're still racing carbed 2-strokes. What happens on the road doesn't mean the same will happen on the track.

There's a heavy cultural element to motorsport. Removing sound and smell from something so fundamental to the culture of bikes might have unintended consequences that might not be a good thing. The lack of sound might make it hard to sell out stadiums, or charge the same as before. There's so many little things. Dirtbikes is a specialist market too, this can't be forgotten.

I don't think anyone predicted 23 years ago when Napster appeared that we'd have a market now with vinyl sales growing AND old music making up 70% of the market share.

It's funny you say 'wake up and smell the coffee'. It demonstrates the acute mechanism within our brain to correlate certain smells with emotion

Only time Zack for podium worth of points in 250 was 2017 when he won title. Same goes to his 450 Nationals just one title and other seasons not so great. Is he best rider out there for Triumph for 250?

There’s been LOTS of electric car infrastructure here in California in the last 5-7 years. I’m not for it, but it’s coming whether we want it or not.

Off those not under contract , can you think of anyone better

And if you had a offer from a big team already , like star , pc or ktm/gas gas /husky or honda , Would you take the triumph deal with out a bike in production ?

Why not a hybrid bike. Electric motor but a small ice to charge itself as needed. Could be easily done.
