Has anyone ever seen one of these were the guy actually looks proficient ? I’ve had a couple projects lately and I YouTubed them just to see what I was in for, and it seems like 90% of the videos it’s some guy that’s doing it for the first time and figuring it out as he goes. it seems like they make mistakes, have to do stuff over, braek fasteners, and pretty much do all the stupid shit that I’m trying to learn how to avoid. I looked up how to change the battery on a Yamaha XT 250, just to see, and the guy breaks one of the knobs off the plastic where it pushes into the little rubber grommets 😂. Are there any how to YouTube channels with guys and actually know how to do it ? Hey Boomslang maybe a niche for a proficient mechanic ?

I've seen lots of sketchy "how-to" videos, but I absolutely LOVE the 1A Auto Parts DIY stuff. I have actually ordered car parts from them for a little bit more money than other places simply because their videos are so helpful and I want them to keep being able to make them!!!

I second the A1 Auto stuff. Use em all the time and buy the parts from em too. Those videos are so valuable I don't care if I'm getting the best deal on parts.

I don't necessarily mind the n00b how to vids. I am watching to see what to do, and what not to do, and how hard it is - the vids provide all that information. It's far better than no resource at all.

I agree, there are some pretty rough channels out there with sketchy videos. The amount of people trying to get on YouTube is astronomical because everyone wants to make an easy dollar, so a lot of people are inexerienced with mechanical work as well as doing anything in front of a camera. Most people think they can just slap a video together and make money on there.

I've been making videos for years and got started with the YouTube thing more seriously about 2 years ago. I've spent a lot of time on it, too much time but at the root of it, I just like making videos. It doesn't really matter to me the topic. My channel will never succeed because it has no "niche" but I don't care, I just enjoy going back and looking at the videos.

There are some solid channels on there with some really good information. With moto it seems most of the good ones are honestly channels done by companies such as Rocky Mtn and the like. I do like the "Dirt Bike Channel."

As far as my other interests such as Toyotas and Music..the good stuff out there is infinite.

That was a bit of a ramble but I like talking YouTube. Hope you can find what you are looking for on there, and I agree, I bet there are some guys on this site that could do some amazing How-to's/DIY videos.

Not a how-to channel, but watching this guy do a variety of repairs is pretty cathartic.

I always watch a few different videos for the same task and look for the commonalities before I begin.

My sons an expert on everything after watching YouTube.
I told him awhile back, wait and, I’ll help you do your brakes.
After watching YouTube, he did it himself. He found out the hard way, on a Mustang, you don’t press the pistons in the calipers. You spin them in. Well, all four calipers were now seized. Expensive lesson but, whatever. I just hope he watches a few electrical clips since he’s out on his own now. 😂

Monetizing brought out some good and some bad. You can find some pretty good how to's but there are a lot of bad ones. Especially in the trades. Just bad advice.
I get on kicks watching different things.
Woodworking: Tamar, Stumpy and some of the East Europeans building cutting boards. They don't talk though.
Metalworking: Abom79 is good if you have a lathe. This old Tony is fun too.
Funny stuff: AvE is a hoot. Canadian slang at it's best.
Music: Wings of Pegusus is pretty good. Rick Beato sometimes.

I like most of Beato's videos, except the ones where he is whining about the artists who don't let him use their stuff.

While I wish that they would let their stuff be shown, it's their intellectual property in the end so his rants get a bit tiresome.

He's got some good content otherwise, though!

I love Rick Beato.

Park Tool has a great YouTube channel for repairing bicycles.
Most of the How-to videos I've seen are at least "good enough." I must have missed all the doofuses.

For the most part that's true but it kind of depends on the type of work. I think most of the car repair vids are pretty good along with some specialized stuff like replacing certain parts on certain tools. Where it starts to get jankey is home improvement stuff. Maybe it's because that's what I do that makes me so critical but some of the stuff is just wrong.

If you like tearing into tools to see how well they are made, try AvE. Look for vids that have BOLTR in the title. He's crazy. That will be obvious, but he must be some kind of mfg engineer because he knows a shitload about how power tools are made. He'll take two cordless drills and lock the chucks onto a common shaft and lock both triggers on until one starts to smoke. He trashes tons of expensive shit. You guys that like to tinker, this is your guy.

I watched a few for tight repairs with difficulty seeing what your doing. Some video mechanics r pretty bad. I,ve beaten there times doing it my way. When your doing the repair I,m thinking of the people using the yt way and all the extra not nessary steps. My record repair b4 yt is changing a3406 Cat engine with a custom fabricated air clutch that can b operated by hand or remotely 800 ft away in a survey trl. Changed it to 480 pin 24 volt for faster operation. Engine change and running in 2 hrs flat. It was powers a industrial high pressure mud pump for a hhg rig. When finished I threw my tshirt away and hv a coworker spray 2 can of brake guard on my back to clean it.

Lotta good content on YT. Just have to have an open mind or opinion of what works and don't before looking it up.
Skip through the idiots till you get on someone that has been through it like yourself. Then your on to something

Haha I can't handle the noob videos. You have more patience than me. I want to see Ok here's the tools you need, start here do this do that watch out for this make sure you do this thanks for watching have a nice day.

Not, Ok were gonna fix this today, Start by taking this piece off........

........... it looks like..... oh yeah there's a bolt down there that must hold it on....... it's a .....looks a like 7/16 tic toc tic toc.... oh it must be metric...take a few sips of beer...... ok now this panel must pull off, ........or ...maybe.... slide off, or pull out then slide off..... oh the little plastic piece broke off, that's ok we don't need it......

I get it it's entertaining but if I'm trying to figure something out that shit drives me nuts Laughing

I want to hear from the guy that's done 100, Not Stoney Mahoney stumbling through it for the first time. Fuck at least stumble through it first on your own time and then make a video so it at least seems like you know what the fuck your doing Laughing Laughing Laughing

The YouTube VID that is going nuts right now is the
Trevor Jacob Plane Crash Vid
shit ton of folks capitalizing on his failure
The word Schadenfreude comes to mind.

I like Trevor, just don't know where his head was at making the VID.
Hope he is OK

Definitely have to take them with a grain of salt, and caution. I used one just a couple days ago to get at the blower motor on fathers Edge. Thought I had it cased except discovered the vid was for a slightly older model and things were a little different when I got at it. But I got done what I wanted to do.

I watch Beato for his music reviews and top lists etc. His music theory stuff is over my head . There are plenty of good guitar lesson vids on the tube though for just about any song you can think of .

100%. Beato is definitely a super talented guy-- just to be able to play all the instruments as well as he does , but his technical knowledge blows me away. I don't understand most of what he explains (so he could be full of shit, lol) but I do enjoy his channel---except the bitching about the artists that "block" their material.

Another good music channel is the Adam Reader's Professor of Rock . Great stories behind the songs.

Project Farm is also a good one for all of us "garage mechanic" type. Its great to see what products work and which ones suck. Saved me from making the wrong choice many a time

I hadn't heard anything about this until seeing your comment. Holy Christ, what an asshole! He needs to pay for removal of that plane and I hope he gets heavily fined for that crap!

I watch automotive how to before starting a job to see how it's supposed to go . Some different machining videos that I half ass pay attention to and critique to myself. The one I just watched that was a multi part and a really good watch was how to build a cross kart, complete with a 1000 cc street bike engine . That was a cool video to watch to kill time.

Beato is legit with his music theory. It's sometimes even a little advanced for me, and I have a B.A. in music!

I really like his takes on the music, though; he often describes something I noticed before myself, and I concur. Or, he'll point out something I never noticed and it makes my enjoyment of the song even richer.

I just discovered David Bennett Piano YT channel last night. I thought it was excellent. I downloaded Beato's full course recently too. Slogging may way through, trying to learn how to play guitar correctly after playing for 30 years. lol

There's plenty of good info and "how-to" videos out there but, so much shit you have to wade through.

EDIT: I know you weren't looking for suggestions dood but, came across this guy when trying to fix my push mower.

My best mate got me onto Essential Craftsman a few years ago too.

Just a random one that is not related (but awesome) to what he does.

Further to this, I've watched videos from people with 100 views that have helped, gotten the basic idea of how to do things, and winged it. Laughing
