I'm so glad I could make you laugh and cry at the same time. But since I'm so stupid on the subject, I'll share something that's not propaganda that I've bought into.

I have a nephew that started with pot and is now a meth addict. Had to keep going for a bigger high, I guess. He is very intelligent in most respects and could have had a great future if not for his addiction. He goes between jail and rehab continuously. His wife is raising his 5 kids without him. He gets out of rehab and will seem to be doing great, then out of the blue he is right back to using.

So thanks for letting me know how brainwashed I am. I definately bought into the propaganda hook, line, and sinker.

Good for you. And intelligence has nothing to do with making stupid decisions.

I think you're just hanging out with some shitty ass people if that's what you're seeing from weed smokers.

Well, I would say it does...you don't have to be a genius to know that doing Meth is a shitty idea.

Anyway, I'm well aware I won't change your mind, that's fine...I don't have time to try anyway...due for a quick bong toke so I can finish up my work for the morning.

I didn't say it made you violent, beat you wife and kids, or any of that. What it does do is alter brain function. It's usually pretty easy to tell just talking to someone for a few minutes and listening to the speech patterns and observing their body language if they've been a heavy user. It also affects motivation, and many, not all, have trouble keeping a job.

Even worse it often leads to use of the harder drugs. As said in a deleted post, that is a self control problem, but poor self control is usually associated with pot. I know there are plenty of pot defenders on here, and many may be able to use responsibly, but they are the minority.

I also don't condone alcohol, even though many are responsible with that as well. Like I said, I'm not much fun, but I only have about twelve brain cells, and I'd like to keep them.

Myself, I'd rather hang out with people who are sober, than stoned or drunk.
Life isn't safe and our chosen sport is about the most dangerous sport anyone could choose. Drinking and Pot smoking can be bad, but our sport has claimed more of us than drugs or alcohol I'd guess. I'm not a pot smoker, used to drink a lot more than I do now but my biggest problem are past injuries from motocross coming back to haunt me now in my late 40's.

Sounds like you have some bad genetics in your family. Your nephew is a complete dumbass, and he probably got that from his parents. Sometimes it's hard to face the truth, and easier to blame something else.

I know a TON of pot smokers. None of them are lazy, all of them make a ridiculous amount of money from their professions, and none of them have ever smoked meth. And none of them would ever leave their wife or family.

I would venture to say way more people than you think use marijuana in some form, and then a proportionate amount live normal lives and a certain amount struggle with addiction in any form. I believe theres a stat somewhere that the majority of people who have smoked weed don't even try weed again, let alone spiral from there into meth.

About as effective as misinformation and small sample size anecdotal evidence.

I’ve been smoking weed for over 50 years and I have to agree about the harder drug use, quite happy with weed. As for the op’s nephew, you do know addiction is a mental disease and I’m pretty sure said nephew would either be a raging alcoholic or meth head, sadly that’s how addiction works.

There is no way our sports has even claimed a fraction of a percent of what drugs and alcohol have. Maybe I misunderstood your statement?

Pretty interesting perspectives from both sides on this. I am not bothered either way with what people choose to do with their lives. I did notice when it was legalized up here week one had line ups out the stores and through the parking lots to buy, now half the stores look like they have gone out of business and those I know that tried it because it was legal did it a few times and the novelty wore off.

Do you live full time in Yellow Pine? I've been there a few times on moto adventures riding the epic trails around your neck of the woods and stopped in for lunch at the Yellow Pine Tavern. What great slice of heaven you've got there.

I just meant inside of our sport alone, not general public. Maybe I'm wrong but I sure see a lot of gravely injured people in our sport. Just going to a supercross, the pits are filled with people in wheelchairs and crutches limps etc.. What other sport do you go to that a portion of the fans/participants are there in wheelchairs? It's dangerous AF. Pot, yeah maybe it will take someone deep into the addiction world but to me it just makes the average person a little less smart than they were pre pot. I just got news from my doc that in order to get a hip replacement that I need from a gnarly femur/hip break at Elsinore back in 2006 they may have to cut my femur to pieces to remove a stuck femur rod prior to the hip replacement surgery. Maybe a year of surgery/recovery. Pot never did that to me... Which I don't use marijuana but when I did it just made me not my best version not 7 surgeries and hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.
I do still race though LOL Going for the 50 expert wins in the Old Timer National series this year. I capped off the end of my 40 expert racing with a 5 moto sweep at the Boise Idaho round.

I think it is shame that people think they cannot go through life without being intoxicated in some way.

It's crazy, right? I've stood on top of cliffs before. Didn't jump, but I knew it was a bad idea.

As for the ones saying my nephew is an idiot, I agree totally. There are a lot of people in this world who have a high IQ and are idiots.

The funny thing is, last time he was doing well, he was at our house for Thanksgiving. Unprovoked, he started telling me how great marijuana was, and used the exact same arguments I'm hearing from you guys.

Agree, honestly its not much different to booze. fine in moderation, If it is abused daily you are probably in trouble.
When used in moderation I would argue weed causes fewer issues than booze. plenty of people are total dicks when pissed. drink driving and violent etc.

The only issue I have with pot is some kids start smoking regularly whilst they are developing. we had some bong rats at school and it really f**ked up their lives in a way that booze did not. But I put more blame on the parents, zero chance I would have got away with punching cones every morning when I was a teenager.

Smoking the odd joint is a good time, just like having a few beers.

Bottom line, don't let it get out of control, take responsibility for your actions, and most of all, don't be a dick

I would like to state that just because I thought he lost his cool and missed a prime opportunity to rub their noses in it, in no way do I think he's on his way to meth addiction.

The slippery slope argument seems especially silly if you live in a state where it's legal. Back when I was in college in Illinois and weed was illegal, I could also get coke, party drugs, hallucinogens and more just as easy as I could get pot.

Now that I live in Colorado, I have no idea where to get any harder drugs because I can just go to a damn store to get my weed.

All this talk of jobs and drugs. Drug abuse is prevalent in a lot of work, particularly doctors https://www.therecoveryvillage.com/drug-addiction/professions-highest-r…

There's a lot of 'classism' with regard to judging people who use dope and that kind of thing. When people find out plenty of doctors have substance abuse problems suddenly it all goes quiet
