Want to leave California. Where should I go?

If your leaving CA don't sell your house rent it out if you can. You'll thank me when you move back. Furthermore, you have four kids. Wherever you go they will not have the growing up opportunities for them that CA has. I moved away and came back mainly because of this. Ten years ago my house was 500k now its 1.5M. Go and try someplace new but leave yourself/family a way to get back in .
This is great advice

I believe New York in 2020 had the highest number of people fleeing there state. For many obvious reasons. My wife and I talk about leaving all the time. The pros and cons. We live upstate NY

PROS
-Great schools
-Beautiful lakes and parks including the Adirondacks
-Fairly low housing comparative to some other areas
-No life threatening weather besides lots of snow
-Some great skiing and snowboarding spots
-Mostly friendly hard working people in this area
-Wine country, Niagara Falls, NYC, and more

CONS
-Taxes
-Politics
-Winters are brutal (lack of sun is what gets me)
-NYC and most metro areas crime rate is going up
-Potholes and weathered infrastructures in decay
-A lack of opportunity and good quality jobs

For Moto this area is great by the way! Within two hours there’s a dozen or so tracks. Plus Unadilla, Southwick, High Point, Budds Creek all within a reasonable drivings distance to enjoy
What’s good in Niagara Falls?

This is good stuff. I've moved around a lot and always sold because I didn't want the hassle of renting the house (and needed the money to be honest) but there are several places where I've owned nice houses that I'll never get back into now. SoCal is one of them.

I built a house on a 5 acre lot and I'm itching to move in 2-3 years but I'll rent it out this time because my kids might want to live here one day and I know that this place will be way out of reach for them (or me) because it's a desirable location and the urban sprawl is simply out of control.

Your pension alone is worth more than 99% of Vital will make in a lifetime dude. TX firemen don’t get paid anything near to what you guys make in CA. Yeah you won’t pay state income tax here, but if you own a home in Carlsbad, you’re probably paying close to nothing on property tax there either.

Dude, you legitimately live in what I consider the nicest part of Southern California. I honestly have to wonder if you understand how perfect of a spot Carlsbad is.

I get that culturally, CA has become kooky, but it’s still a great place to live.

My $.02 as somebody who packed up and left in August.

My issue is with safety and quality of life for my kids. I do own a home, and can walk to the beach which is pretty rad. The problem is I won’t let my kids walk to the beach because of the homeless who live around us. Human shit in the parks next to my house, creepy homeless living in the bushes where we have hiking trails, and the cost of living is going though the roof.

As mentioned in a post above “I’m not getting what I pay for.” I would love for my kids to have the freedoms I had as a child. Where I live now I cannot give them those freedoms because I’m scared who they may encounter.

I’d take a pay cut in a heartbeat to give my family a life based on the values we hold.

I probably won’t move, but it’s been pretty cool researching the towns many of you have mentioned.
Your allowed to shoot people on your property in NC.

With all due respect to my Keystone State friends, it is a lovely state with fantastic people, however, trying to find a store to purchase beer in Pennsylvania - is extremely frustrating. Do NOT move there if you like easy beer access. *Worth mentioning, that Troeg’s Perpetual IPA, out of Hershey, is an exceptional fluid. Absolutely tasty shiiiiii

Had to drive all the way from high point into WV for beer once.

Moved from So Cal almost 30 yrs ago. Live in the Southeast, a small town outside Chattanooga. Plenty of riding and other outdoor sports. Cost of living much cheaper, and safe. We are getting a lot of transplants from Cali.

I do miss the Diversity that So Cal offers, but that's about it.

Everybody talking about wanting to leave California, and I'm over here counting down the days until I can move there. My wife and I took our honeymoon in California, and we couldn't get enough of it. Been hooked ever since. I have lived in PA my whole life, and I completely hate it here.

It’s not even nice for a visit anymore. Everything shuts down early and you have to pay and get tested to get into Canada… very miserable place to be.

Well, you belong of a pretty damn good FD; but, some of your local politicians are weak POS’s. You FD types need to get involved in local politics and fix this shit. Ben, one of yours and a good friend of “me’s” (we, me-n-Ben, can’t use that other possessive word for fear of having to do endless push ups), needs to run for office AND keep his “Fire Boss”’job.

Stay here and get to work on that shit. That’s an order! Grinning

If you think you are going to beat Carlsbad with any quality of life factors besides cost of housing you are tripping. When I travel all around the west I’m constantly amazed at how good I have it at home.

FWIW, NC has a growing and vibrant MX and offroad scene, cost of living is moderate and year-round riding is pretty reliable, especially in SE part of state. I'm between Durham and Greensboro and there must be a dozen good tracks within 2 hours. Across the VA line we have the Bailey legacy at Lake Sugar Tree. Near Charlotte, we have ex-JGR Reed and Brayton apparently settling in, and Reed opened his track, Moto X 40, this year. Jimmy Weinert Training Facility near Jacksonville, and some other good sand tracks near the coast. Plenty of GNCC, enduro and hare scrambles too.

Same. Saint Catherine’s is a blast for a couple 19 year olds. We used to head up all the time. We’d wear Chive shirts up there because for some reason Canadian girls loved the Chive. Many fun times we’re had just from wearing a shirt!

I like nor nv/ca. I don't hate on all parts of ca. Some I prefer, some I don't. Wished they'd split the state, but they won't. Ca will eventually make a more business friendly climate in next few years. They will out of necessity. Maybe that's being hopeful, but the resources that state has are undeniable. All states these days get you one way or another on some tax/fees. I just would look at climate/job and let the rest sort itself out. Just my 02.

Have you considered just moving inland and turning off the news? I’ve spent over 30 years living at the beach and it’s always had crap areas and people but now it’s just much worse.
CA politics and people are bad but I’m more concerned on a national level.
We just moved. Dropped a ton of debt and liability, live well within our means, good schools down the street, still surf, still good weather, trails everywhere, great tracks close, plenty of elbow room. Not necessarily a step down and we are happy.
Maybe there is a better life closer than you think?
