The pic directly above!! Wtf ?!!
Presuming it is genuine?

Remember seeing guys riding in like the 1950's with fags in their mouths but not so much motocross- let alone on what appears to be sort of mid 1970's machinery.

Looks like the smoking dude got quite a good start .... Laughing

Remember Barry Sheene here in the 70's - read somewhere that he actually had a hole drilled in helmet to pass fag through with his helmet still on and have a few draws before the races- not sure how true this story is but seems feasible given he often seemed to be smoking in the pits. Sure he never smoked whilst racing though!

I reckon that guy above also has a bottle of Scotch strapped to his body- to see him through if the going got tough... how things have changed ... guess that guy probably though was still quite a minority- even then.

Absolutely- worse still the vapours released of pouring the gas in the air- its the vapours that would rise- and really flipping set the whole thing off with an explosion pretty much before the fuel would also catch- doesn't bear thinking about- thank God he was presumably okay.

His flat cap would be a toasted pancake as well as his face- shocking really. I wonder if he knew of the dangers?
You would think so - maybe he just kept the dead fag in his mouth without sparking it up- hopefully so!

Also maybe worth mentioning- always watch those fuel vapours, when working in enclosed spaces- grinders and who knows what. Also charging Batteries- have heard a few horror stories with those and the gases that are released.

Doesn’t appear to be lit..the dude in the back with the beard looks out of place..like a modern transient time traveled back to 1950’s France.

You guys know you can't light gas with a lit cigarette? Not even if you try.

Also if you gave Steve McQueen an electric bike he probably wouldn't have been caught up in taking a side over some pseudo political social proxy war and he would've just rode it to see if it was cool.

My dad regularly operated my quick fill with a lit cigarette. It was a little extra motivation to make it a fast pit stop.

I thought the smoking guy on the Maico may have been rocking the number 1 but couldn't quite make it out- being the National Champion! Which sort of makes it even cooler! That post was by ex GP rider and winner Gordon Crockard who's Dads also pictured. Expect all those riders were fast.

Thank you. At least there are a few grounded people still left in the world.

Barry Sheene Helmet, with cigarette hole👀. Hole was covered by tape when racing.

You guys are so dramatic!! A cigarette will not ignite gasoline!

Go try it- pour yourself a small pan of petrol, take a kit cigarette snd go ahead snd stub it out straight in to it.

No dramas!

Possibly so- but its the vapours of rising into the air whilst pouring the fuel- that's the big danger- becomes like a gas and much more volatile- BANG!

Interesting- wouldn't really say though his vapour test was so convincing or proper though- i.e RISING VAPOURS into the air from bigger source such as enclosed fuel tank- as you actually pour the fuel and the vapours mix with air and rise. He just poured it into a dish- wasn't really at all vapours rising, i.e air pushing upwards as it would be whilst filling a fuel tank. Not at all the same. He just filled a dish and held it over it- assuming there was vapours! Filling a tank will push AIR and fumes out- totally different thing to holding a fag over a dish... needs rising air as would be the case of the tank filling up. He just filled a shallow dish and held flame over it- air wasn't rising as it would be as the tank fills up under pressure.

I aint gonna try it! That's for sure.... 'Flame on ...'- excuse the pun!
