It would be pretty awesome if an American rider set aside greed...

There's No need to set aside 'greed'.

Just have an ambition, and the nouse to get out of ones comfort zone.

If a US rider gets off their arse, and goes to Europe , and does very, very well, they'll make a Huge amount of money.

But, they'd have to beat a fair few other riders, going for Fortune and Fame. But, that's the case, wherever they race.

It's like this - only a very few make Massive Euros or $$ from this sport, be it in the USA, or GPs, then you've got those that make a lot, then a very reasonable living, and so on, ever further down the scale.

I find the belief that there's no money to be made in the GPs (I'm not talking about 'prize money' - we all know that f**kwit Luongo so needs money to "help the sport" - that's sarcasm, people) , and European Internationals, to be bloody comical - no, bloody idiotic. But, (mostly) American 'fans' just don't seem to think anyone other than an America based rider makes the "Big Bucks " or Bonus's . Whistling
Most Americans don’t think that at all. Like not even a little bit. Most of us know the top guys in the MXGP series are making good money just like the top guys are here.

Most “Euros” think just because they finally have a leg up on the American MX series that means all Americans should wanna go there and race. I got news for you, most Americans wanna stay here and race here. They wanna be able to travel freely and do as they wish. They don’t want to worry about going to random countries and worry about different laws, crime, cultures etc. I know that’s extremely hard for you to believe and regardless of what you see on the news this is still a great place to be. Go talk to any 16 year old kid and say hey, do you wanna stay here in your home country, make good money to ride a dirt bike, be on live TV and racing in stadiums in front of a lot of people and be relatively famous or do you wanna go travel to different countries, still make good money but be completely unknown to basically everyone in your home country. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which is more appealing.

Remember in the 90's and early 2000's no one went to Europe, not because of greed, it was because all of the best competition was right here in the US... If anything the Euro's were wanting to come here. No one held the FIM Championship in high esteem... It is becoming that way now, but nothing like in the 70's or 80's. It may never be held in that regard again. Is it important? Yes. Like it was back then? Not even close...

My 2 cents

If Herlings had a couple race series in the Netherlands that paid him as much as he makes now, he wouldn't be racing the MXGPs, either.

Greed: selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed.

Who decides what’s excessive? You OP? 🙄

It sure would be cool if some hack, libfuck, semi-journalist would give up his cushy income to go cover the GP series for less than half of what he makes stateside for doing the same thing. Stop being greedy, Bauer. Go do it.

No doubt. I love how he thinks because HE wants certain riders to do what HE wants and not what THEY want that means THEY are greedy. Lol pretty sure OP is the greedy one.

I get what’s posted here by Bearuno & I also think that Bauer’s original post reads a little more “agro”, to some, than I think he’d intended.

It would be pretty damn cool if one of our fast guys chose to race the GPs as an early career choice; but, realistically…that’s also on the backs of the OEMs & sponsors both HERE & in Europe to create an avenue for rider development for the GPS that is comparable or at least promoted, over here, as an option for the riders we’re developing..:again…developing “here”.

When riders and their parents are looking for support/sponsors…here…no one among the sponsors seems to care about anything other than SX & MX (AMA) titles; and, that’s what we do “here”…so…
KTM/HSQ/GG
Honda
Kawasaki
Yamaha
Suzuki (hey, it could happen)
Red Bull
Rockstar
Monster
Etc., etc., etc. …
They -all- need to be involved with the push to get an American “Star” to go the MXGP route early on in their career by GIVING that option some “street-cred” here in the U.S.

As someone that was a childhood dreamer and eventually a rider in this sport, I know the era that the OP (Bauer) raced in and have the fondest memories of the Trans AMAs when Europe’s bad asses came here and made our guys “work over-time” racing & attempting…attempting to beat them. It literally was the best-of-times in Moto. Believe it or not, you could see the worlds best race an SX on one day and then see them at a Golden State Series race the next…that kind of “getting back to racing” would be nice to return to…also.

So, I get what Bauer is saying…& I know that he answer is a bit more complicated.

Unpopular opinion-

OP may have been heavy handed with the greed comment but the fact is, the best outdoor (not talking SX!) riders are in Europe.

If a racer wanted to prove they are the best outdoor rider, they need to do the GPs.

Yeah, I get the pay and food and blah blah, but if they want to prove they are the best outdoor rider, they need to do the GPs.

Wouldn't it be nice if TC and Herlings set aside their greed and came to race SX? They really should put their economic well being aside and come here for my amusement. See how stupid that sounds? 😖

I'd say the spectator turn out for the 2016 SMX event in Germany, might be quite an influential 'deal breaker' for any SX promoter thinking of holding a SX in any large European / British stadium.

The losses on that, must have been enormous.

True, haha!

True but I think the outdoor series is secondary to a lot of the riders . I'm not saying outdoor motocross is not at all important to them but it takes a back seat to Supercross.

Maybe, just maybe, they wanna prove they’re the best SX rider. Or the best SX/MX combined rider. It’s only been a few short years since the MXGP series has been “better.” Most of these kids probably have never watched a MXGP race in their life (yes, they’re missing out) but I guarantee you they’re watching every American SX and MX race they can and they’re aspiring to be there someday.

Assuming any American rider decided to go race in Europe, he'd have to Beat Herlings, Prado, Gasjer and the rest. I don't see that happening on their own tracks in today's MX world. I'm giving Tomac or Cianciarulo less than a 50/50 shot at the title. Who else in America is faster?
It's not like it was in 1986, when Johnny O could go go over there on a 125, lap the field on their 500s while he was eating a sandwich with his clutch hand, and daydream about how he was going to spend his purse money. The Euros are fast now.

More dirt bikes sold in the USA , although it is said the pay checks at the top are now similar

Also , the fact that the ama supercross series is the most prestigious title in dirt bike racing means that anyone with a good ride in that will very likely not leave it to join the gp circus

It would take a guy coming into his prime and he would have to be willing to forego the temptation of racing SX in the states, which would no doubt mean making less money.

It is kind of crazy that the first, last and ONLY American 500 World Champion was Brad Lackey. It took him ten years to get it done, and he and Lori sacrificed plenty to make it happen, but it remains as elusive now as it was then. Fair play to Danny LaPorte, who won the 250 title his first year over there...but the 500 championship was then, and still is a whole other beast.

I remember all the 'merica yahoos in here thinking Villo was going to go there and romp...hahahaha! Going there at the tail end of a career is not gonna ever be enough to land that bad boy. We don't have an American driver racing F-1, no rider racing MotoGP and diddley-squat in MXGP. Where's all that USA pride? Who will step up? Sadly, no one.

Oh well, just thinking out loud. Carry on.
So… after that long winded whine, you fail to even list the LAST AMERICAN 🇺🇸 to do just this.

There’s only one guy that won a SX title, then went straight to the GP’s and contended for a title. Came close in the 250’s a couple times, but did win the 125 title.

He is also the last American to win a GP title… he just happens to be a good friend of mine and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments.

None other than Bobby Moore……. 💪🏾

Always have been . Even during our initial 13 year MXdN win streak there were times we needed some luck to get get it done and also times when the fastest rider on the day wasn't an American.

Just like Glen Helen is the World Vet Championship, in name only. How is it a world motocross championship when they don't even hold a race in the United States, the country that purchases the most motocross bikes?

Probably because your tracks are to easy, manicured freeways. Wheres the challenge for them? Thats why those euros excel at MXDN time.

The SX championship is the most important championship in MX racing. It would be a step backwards for an American rider to go to the GPs Ask Roczen, Marvin, JMB and others that have came here in order to compete for the SX championship.

A top rider in the US will make the same money here as in Europe. Herlings is the KTM groups highest payed rider.

But back to why they won’t go.
1 they like sleeping in their own beds
2 they like eating their food
3 they like their training facilities.
4 they like decent weather.

Why they don’t go.
1 sleeping in a motor home for three days at a track.
2 never knowing what food the area will provide.
3 food poisoning
4 horrible travel schedule
5 riding on wet sand somewhere in Belgium in 35 degree weather.

I’ll be honest tho, if my son was a top amateur, I’d send him to Europe for two seasons to teach him how to survive, because they are definitely tougher than the American riders.
Food poisoning??

Haha Jesus it’s not a 3rd World Country!!

You forgot a huge reason why they won't go...

The young guys who would go when they're "in their prime" are afraid of the possibility of having their asses handed to them on tracks that aren't perfectly groomed & made of SX-centric obstacles by guys who are used to going fast on them. They can stay here and race on tracks like they "came up" riding and training on.

I'm all for a top American heading over to give it a run, but leave greed out of it.

I mean, if GPs teams weren't so "cheap" they could pay more to steal a top American over, right? It's all how you choose to cut it.

Given how shortened careers can be no rider should take less to race anywhere unless that racer' wants to and believes that that goal transcends the financial opportunity cost. That's purely a personal decision. We're probably three-plus generations of top riders not even born when Brad completed his journey, and there's no buying into that 70's romanticism about the GPs and their status 50 years ago relative to baby US motocross when all the best riders were in the GPs and some of them showed up in the fall to prove it during the Trans AMA.

I love to get drunk on those memories, too, but it's not even close to the same business today and the riders are the last ones that should be thrown under the bus for that.

Food poisoning is probably the wrong word. Some American riders got sick from food they weren’t used to.
