Help for taller riders on newer Yamaha's?

I'm looking for suggestions on what taller riders have done to improve the openness of the cockpit on the newer Yamaha's.

I do believe the Yamaha's are one of the biggest bikes, but the footpegs sit high up compared to other brands and it has a super low seat. So it's kind of deceiving because you would think it'd be the best bike for taller riders but not for me. I've been riding a 19 250f and love the bike and power but, I do feel a bit crammed riding it. I'm 6'1 so anything you guys have done to help let me know.

Sounds like taller seat foam is pretty well liked by tall guys on these bikes. I tried the low pegs and didnt like em, Im like 5 11 tho

Kevin Windham bend Pro Raper handlebars. 1 notch forward, clamps all the way forward.

The 1 inch seat foam helps but I don't use it cause it looks pretty bad.

I'm 6'3" and my son is 6'4" it's what we both run and really don't have much issues.

I'm 6'3" and my son is 6'4" it's what we both run and really don't have much issues.
Cool deal I'll have to give those bars a try if they're taller than stock.

I feel the same thing on Yamaha. One thing that worked is cutting the bottom sptlrin collar off the footpeg and welding it to the top....it effectively lowers and rearward fhe foot pegs around 10 or 12mm

What are your specific complaints with the cockpit? You don’t look cramped in that picture…

Yes it does/did feel cramped for me as well.. I have Vortex SX high bars in the all the way forward positioning of the clamps, guts tall foam and Flo lowering pegs. It definitely helped me feel a bit more comfortable.

GYTR tall seat option helps open up the cockpit, as you're hoping. Personally, I'd start there. Tall seat may not look the most attractive, but it's quite beneficial on the latest generation 4T Yamaha's.

If that isn't enough, pegs may be worth a try (see link below). Most cost effective option for down/back relocation would be Bruce372's suggestion above, and it only costs the price of stock pegs...Best of luck and please keep us updated with your results.

I’m 6’2 and always run my bikes stock. I think the super tall bars and seats mess with the handling to much. Adjusting technique is always better.

You are correct on your assessment. This has been covered many times. I’m 6’5 and run the Fastway low pegs and GYTR tall seat (3/4”). Bar mounts in forward position. Bike was unridable for me otherwise.

Fastway lowered pegs. I am a little over 6’1 barefoot and had a 2019 YZ250F that I was struggling to make the transition from sitting to standing and these pegs made all the difference. They also made me feel more connected to the bike when standing. The only other adjustment was moving bars forward but did not get taller bars or seat.

I had the same gripe after riding one of the new gen Yamahas. Flo makes lowering foot pegs for people with longer legs. I believe that to be a better option than raising the seat height as that changes the comfort of reach to the ground as well.

Another vote for the pro taper windham bend. I'm short but even I much prefer them over stock. Stock yz bend is a low bend.

I'm 6' 2" and back in the day when I was younger I had to have the Windham bars and taller seat...Looking back I was always searching for excuses. I just recently purchased 2021, left bars stock, seat stock, suspension stock etc and just ride it. I feel like it's really easy to get going down the "comfort" path and lot of money can be spent. Just focus on enjoying the ride and your technique and any discomfort in ergonomics youll forget about. I dont think Benny Bloss even runs different bars, seat, foot pegs and he is 6' 7"! But if youre still not comfortable, the seat is the biggest change you can feel instantly imo. 😎

6’2” and my only change is the gytr tall seat. I really like the stock bend and used to put it on my Hondas. I have a 21 450 and moved the bars to rear mounts because braking had a weird feeling on the front.

The tall seat had an added benefit of making the bike feel a little narrower because of where your leg is in relation to the shrouds on corners.

I think the gytr tall seat is $170 complete with pan foam and cover, so it a pretty good bargain. If you decide you don’t like it, you still have a spare pan to put firmer foam on which you’ll want because the stock seat foam claps out really fast.

Lower pegs is the first fix. 10mm lower pegs doesn’t sound like much but makes a big difference.
For me lower pegs have a negligible effect on handling while keeping the weight down low.
A tall seat seat disrupts handling a little bit more. Yamahas didn’t used to be scrunched up but the new ones are.

Personally I would steer away from the bars in the forward mounted position. It messes with the handling and doesn’t allow a proper lean angle. Neutral bar positioning and maybe run the 2020 mounts that are 5mm taller. Lower pegs drag in ruts so your better off with the GYTR tall seat foam

I never felt comfortable with the rider triangle on my YZ450F 2020. I tried the taller seat, but still felt cramped. I don’t know of any pegs that lower the new ones much at all. I kept hoping System Tech would make lowering brackets for the 450 like they do for the 250 2-stroke, but they are still a ways out they said. I sold it and got another Husky.

Also, most of the euro riders run a taller seat than the stock seat, even those under 6”. Glenn Coldenhoff is 5”9’ and runs a taller seat than 6” Ben Watson . Even Jeremy Seewer, the smallest guy on the team, runs a higher than stock profile. Here’s a video of GH’s bike and the main page has a pit bits of JS’s bike posted today. It’s really the seat the bike should’ve shipped with.

The handling dynamics of the tall seat actually feel better for me than stock because the pocket is a lot flatter so I don’t have to struggle to get far forward on the bike with my legs pretzeled up.

I posted earlier about this but got the price wrong; looks like the gytr tall seat is $150 and comes with pan, foam and cover so you don’t have to gamble and rebuild your stock seat. You can swap em out and ride back to back.

In case I’m not being clear, just buy the fucking tall seat. I can guarantee you’ve wasted more money on way more useless upgrades that cost you more time and money to undo. You could even sell it if you put a few hours on it and decide it’s not the play.

Flo down and back footpegs. Yes the hang in ruts easier. Pick a shallower rut.

Generally speaking (not directed specifically at the OP) Sometimes I think dirt bike riders are the most unnecessarily picky people in the world…an inch here or there doesn’t make a difference…just ride the bike.

Riders will strain at a gnat (my seat is a half inch to low, my tires had 2 psi to much, I had a soft terrain tire on intermediate terrain, etc etc) and swallow a camel (technique is so far off) all day every day. I chuckle…

Tall seat can actually make the cramp feeling worse because it brings your hips and knees closer up and closer to the bars

Same. Once you starts messing with tall seats, taller bars, bar risers and lowering foot pegs you usually end up going in circles because everything feels so off and funky.

I’m 6’4”. I have a 2018 YZF450
I made some lowering brackets for the footpegs.
They push the pegs down 1 1/2” and back 1/2”
Bike feels comfortable.
I don’t recommend taller bars or seat I’ve tried everything and they really affect the cornering in a bad way.

You’re right. We’ve all seen that go who shows up 40 lbs overweight, standing on his heels with his back looking like a freshly boiled shrimp that complains about 1 click on the suspension and his pegs being 8mm off. But this bike ships with a really thin seat. The tall seat puts it more in line with other bikes’ riding triangles. For 150 bucks you have an option to switch up ergos trackside faster than an air filter change. What’s the downside here?

Everyone is going to say don’t mess with the ergos and stuff, but my friend, this is your bike, you customize it the way you want to make you the most comfortable.

Everyone says “Don’t raise the bars, lower pegs, ect” but it’s fine for everyone else to use different bars unless they are taller people lol.

I threw a pair of RC High Renthals on my Rmz450 because I always felt cramped, and my friends agreed I looked cramped. At 6’3, the RC high bars opened the cockpit up, and I feel I turn the bike even better now, and just feel so much better. My opinion is start with the bars.

If guys 5’9 are running tall seats then the stock seat is super low, and it looks like the taller seat doesn’t raise it up too much. It also would give your legs something to grip.

On my RMZ I don’t see how anyone would want to make it “bigger”. I would like to try a cut down subframe to be honest.

I made my own “winged” seat cover like the one guts sells. I read reviews that said the winged portion of the cover would go soft and get worn quick. I could take pics if anyone is interested. Cost me 30 bucks and won’t wear out.

I agree, I used to screw with the ergonomics of the bike too much when I was a kid.

I realized that every pro rider would leave the ergonomics close to stock, even the super tall guys.

The way I look at it is there is a bunch of super smart Japanese dudes getting paid to set these bikes up, he probably knows a little more than me.

I might try to live with the seat. I ran tall seats for a long time but then I started living with the stock height because of the lower cg it allows when you tuck in for a turn. The bars and footpegs I would definitely explore.
