"First thing" means it would be when they were first starting out and were slow on the track so I told them to keep to the sides of the track and let the faster riders have the main lines. Most importantly, if a faster ride is about to over take them, ALWAYS hold their line, NEVER try to guess where they are and move out of their way, and let the faster rider find their way around them. #1 safety rule IMHO for a new rider starting out on a track with other riders.

Well, I just introduced my kid to MX...first thing I taught her was "don't touch the pipe...it's hot!".

Am not a father but first thing would be basic controls, don’t panic and have fun.

Also very important; when on track hold your line and don’t try to dodge faster incoming riders. This happens every day every track and is dangerous but easily avoidable

Take two laps to look at track to see how it’s changed through the day and hold your line if they are faster they will go round

Very important. I took a trip to the ER and got some new hardware because a lapper tried moving over for me

Also, I think having patience is very important. I want to teach my gfs daughter technique, but I also don’t want to put too much on her too soon. Right now I’m just letting her get a feel for the controls and once she starts braking and shifting faster, I’ll start giving her pointers. It’s frustrating because all she wants to do is jump lol

I downvoted that on the Ryno theory of fundamentals before "after the crash" protection.

Not opposed to protective gear all the time just think preventative is always best.
