Where's it in the rulebook that Dan can't go behind the gate early, scope it out and farm any gate he wants?

Any rider can come up during their turn and thank Dan for the superior gate farming and to the GTFO of here.

What am I missing?

That's because Dan Truman is an asshole career ball-washer. He's the reason I don't have any GET ecus on my bike. All you can really do these days is not patronize whatever revenue generating entity they represent. ..no one gives a shit about anyone's opinion, especially if it isn't flowery and chocked full of dishonest harmony.

Once at Muddy Creek in the early 90's, Wirehead Jones was running multiple classes and his son was holding a gate for him. Some guy, I think from Pennsylvania, on a KX 500 sporting a number one,,,, pulls up and roots the kid out of the spot. When Jones gets there his boy told him what happened. Wirehead walks over in front of his bike, grabs him by the helmet, drags him up over the handlebars and reads him the riot act, shoves him back on the seat and gets on his own bike. On the first lap, in the 180 right hand turn before the announcer tower, Wirehead ran over the top of ole #1. He didn't finish the race and loaded up and left. Probably a wise move. The moral of this story is, be careful who's gate you nick. Lest you get plowed into the ground.

Wirehead was a badass! Raced him a coupe times in NC.
Yes he was! Ron passed away a while back.

Pourcel was doing this sometimes, he would come to the gate 5min before the race and just choose his gate, which was a gate that already been prepped by another rider.
That is the most Pourcel thing I've ever heard.

Did anyone else hear Dan bragging on the pulp how he goes out before the numbers are called and steals gates for his rider. Not only is he talking about it on the radio but he says the riders are morons for not knowing better.

Imagine that you’re a privateer and you just busted your ass to get 20th and then you’re walking out to your gate and you don’t get to choose it because Dan already stole it.

He’s a representative for a major brand? He should be banned from the pits for cheating. What a scumbag.
You’ve spoke out against one of Steve’s disciples, get ready for the bashing and excuse making you’re going to take.

I ain’t going to lie, I’ve done it. I did it at a local race in the 80s, had the gate all nice and prepped and the guy who’s number was called before mine rolled up and his bike in there and thank me for doing it.

The best one I saw was team Honda having like 5 guys around the spot they wanted so it looked like the spot was taken.

It's called gamesmanship and has been going on since the first race.

If you're not cheating you're not trying hard enough. The reality is it's not that hard to count out the spots and know when you should load. Dan is just going by my life motto: "Act like you own the joint, eventually someone will pay you rent."

There's a famous story about old time NASCAR tuner Smokey Yunick got around fuel cell size limits by running a 6" diameter fuel line from the tank to the engine. There wasn't a specific rule about fuel line size so he got a few more gallons.

"If you're not cheating you're not trying hard enough." That is only said by people who are cheaters. Someone with honesty and integrity wont say that shit.

You can spot Dan pretty easy by the gates. Biggest clown at the races.

Only said by cheaters???? You spelled winners wrong.

"The credit for that old saying generally goes to NASCAR legend Richard Petty, though it just as easily could have come from Tom Brady, Gaylord Perry or pretty much any of the millions who have thrown, pitched or hit a ball since people started playing sports.

Blurring the line between legal and illegal, then figuring out how to get away with it, is as old as keeping score."

So I guess Richard Petty was a cheater. Personally I think Truman just outsmarted the people that didn't tell hi to move.

Yet another AMA pro racing failure. At every single race I've ever attended larger than the ones at Chicken Licks Raceway, the starting gate referee calls you out by number; it's by order of your signup, random tongue depressor draw, or other qualifying method. They do it again in order of 1st moto finish when the second moto comes around. You literally cannot cheat (unless you can push a motorcycle past the gate ref without him knowing it... good luck with 39 other competitors standing around.) Why is this so hard to do in the pros? It would be easy enough to simply require the riders to line up in order they qualified and then let them pick gates.

One of my favorite feelings is being called to pick my gate first. Hearing that guy call out "Nine Ninety One!" and then casually pushing past the guys I beat in moto 1 is a BDE move, for sure.

Its pretty simple actually, if the bike isnt in the gate, pull in it. This isnt local racing where a rider might be back to back. If a rider isnt on time, he loses his gate pick (by rules). Once in the gate, you cant move gates, so again, its simple....IF THERE IS NO BIKE IN A GATE, IT IS AN OPEN GATE. If riders/mechanics cant figure it out, then thats their own fault.

My own Vital thread, that’s pretty neat. Some of you hate facts. I pulled the audio clip from the PulpMX Fantasy show, I have no idea how to post it. If someone would like to post it I will send it to you. I brought up how lucky some people got for picking 94 in Pulpmx fantasy for FFL bonus points. Remember, he DNF’d moto one and then got 40th gate pick and was still able to lead the first lap. Steve then brought up that a listener had sent him a message saying somehow Kenny got a good gate. Steve then said maybe they pulled the old Honda trick, Paul said standing in front of the gate, I said yeah it happens all the time. I did it for Joey at Lakewood. If riders don’t notice it, that’s their own fault.

To be clear, this happens EVERY weekend at races all around the world. Next time you go to a Pro Motocross race, look at how many riders are standing on the gate before their bike is pushed up.

I don’t back AMA / MX Sports in all areas, but I think they do a pretty good job in this specific area. For some of you who don’t know, once the field has qualified, you push your bike to the starting gate and they hand you a signal pass. Only the rider and the mechanic with a signal pass can enter the start area. For the last two years it’s been one rider and one mechanic only behind the gate.

At Lakewood, Joey’s mechanic got really sick right before moto 2. The teams crew chief was gonna step in to be Joey’s mechanic. While he was changing backpacks and getting everything he needed for the moto, I stepped in to help and told MX Sports what was going on. John Starling, who runs the gate area, said “no problem, when his mechanic gets here just step away.” I said “ok, will do”. Joey held his bike in line (they are lined up by how you finish the first Moto rider or mechanic can hold the bike). I said I will go look and see if there are any gates left on the inside. As riders file into there gates, they sometimes don’t even go look on the inside. Also, the official is standing behind the gate holding his fingers up with how many inside gates are left open so every person doesn’t have to walk down and look. If the rider and mechanic don’t know to look at the official, or to walk down there, that is their fault.

At RedBud MXoN 2018, how do you think #4 and #6 lined up almost next to each other in the best gates (inside)? The answer is because they just had the mechanic stand there and everyone assumed it was taken. I was standing above the gate and team USA never even looked at it. They just assumed it was taken and then lined up way outside. These guys had gate picks that were 21 spots apart.

I have worked with a good number of teams and riders. I have a pretty good reputation in the sport. I would disagree that it’s cheating. Remember when Chad got that great start in 2018 at Ironman? Eli could have taken that gate. We asked AMA “can Chad go on the grass before picking the gate.” He said “yes it’s still in the track.” RJ did it the moto before. So, maybe before starting a thread and calling people out for something, you should know the rules and get the facts straight. There are lots of things in all sports athletes do to gain a small advantage that is within the rules.

^ Of course Chad can go in the grass. That's not even a question. It's not roped off, bannered off, or made inaccessible by track markings. That was a genius move on Reed's part that day.

IMO, mechanics should not be standing in the gates unless all the riders have already chosen and are now on a parade lap. No rider or mechanic should be allowed to enter the starting area before his number is called. I must admit I don't know what the rulebook states, but it should have some kind of rule to this effect. If not, holy crap, they are missing an important clarifier.

Have we ever met? Please share this terrible experience. What bike do you ride? The other guys make a great ECU also. Mostly comes down to mapping with ECU’s though. You can make any ECU bad with the wrong mapping. Hope you are having a good day. 😀
