The best one I saw was team Honda having like 5 guys around the spot they wanted so it looked like the spot was taken.
If you're not cheating you're not trying hard enough. The reality is it's not that hard to count out the spots and know when you should load. Dan is just going by my life motto: "Act like you own the joint, eventually someone will pay you rent."
There's a famous story about old time NASCAR tuner Smokey Yunick got around fuel cell size limits by running a 6" diameter fuel line from the tank to the engine. There wasn't a specific rule about fuel line size so he got a few more gallons.
You can spot Dan pretty easy by the gates. Biggest clown at the races.
"The credit for that old saying generally goes to NASCAR legend Richard Petty, though it just as easily could have come from Tom Brady, Gaylord Perry or pretty much any of the millions who have thrown, pitched or hit a ball since people started playing sports.
Blurring the line between legal and illegal, then figuring out how to get away with it, is as old as keeping score."
So I guess Richard Petty was a cheater. Personally I think Truman just outsmarted the people that didn't tell hi to move.
One of my favorite feelings is being called to pick my gate first. Hearing that guy call out "Nine Ninety One!" and then casually pushing past the guys I beat in moto 1 is a BDE move, for sure.
Pit Row
To be clear, this happens EVERY weekend at races all around the world. Next time you go to a Pro Motocross race, look at how many riders are standing on the gate before their bike is pushed up.
I don’t back AMA / MX Sports in all areas, but I think they do a pretty good job in this specific area. For some of you who don’t know, once the field has qualified, you push your bike to the starting gate and they hand you a signal pass. Only the rider and the mechanic with a signal pass can enter the start area. For the last two years it’s been one rider and one mechanic only behind the gate.
At Lakewood, Joey’s mechanic got really sick right before moto 2. The teams crew chief was gonna step in to be Joey’s mechanic. While he was changing backpacks and getting everything he needed for the moto, I stepped in to help and told MX Sports what was going on. John Starling, who runs the gate area, said “no problem, when his mechanic gets here just step away.” I said “ok, will do”. Joey held his bike in line (they are lined up by how you finish the first Moto rider or mechanic can hold the bike). I said I will go look and see if there are any gates left on the inside. As riders file into there gates, they sometimes don’t even go look on the inside. Also, the official is standing behind the gate holding his fingers up with how many inside gates are left open so every person doesn’t have to walk down and look. If the rider and mechanic don’t know to look at the official, or to walk down there, that is their fault.
At RedBud MXoN 2018, how do you think #4 and #6 lined up almost next to each other in the best gates (inside)? The answer is because they just had the mechanic stand there and everyone assumed it was taken. I was standing above the gate and team USA never even looked at it. They just assumed it was taken and then lined up way outside. These guys had gate picks that were 21 spots apart.
I have worked with a good number of teams and riders. I have a pretty good reputation in the sport. I would disagree that it’s cheating. Remember when Chad got that great start in 2018 at Ironman? Eli could have taken that gate. We asked AMA “can Chad go on the grass before picking the gate.” He said “yes it’s still in the track.” RJ did it the moto before. So, maybe before starting a thread and calling people out for something, you should know the rules and get the facts straight. There are lots of things in all sports athletes do to gain a small advantage that is within the rules.
IMO, mechanics should not be standing in the gates unless all the riders have already chosen and are now on a parade lap. No rider or mechanic should be allowed to enter the starting area before his number is called. I must admit I don't know what the rulebook states, but it should have some kind of rule to this effect. If not, holy crap, they are missing an important clarifier.
