My only ride right now is a 2004 YZ125, and it's a blast to ride so that's my choice.

I also would say the YZ250 is the best choice, even though I suck on 250 2strokes. So I'd throw the YZ125 in there too, since I prefer 125s to 250 2strokes. As far as pre-'12 4 strokes that I like, honestly I love the Suzukis. Had a few and they were great. That would maybe be my choice.

I want my '82 YZ490 back soooooo bad. Here's why ...
It did nothing right!!
Cornering was great if you had a 2ft tall berm on the furthest outside of the corner ... you might rail it, might not.
Suspension was equivalent to 5 sealy mattresses stacked on top of each other. "Plush" is too confidence inspiring. More like soft serve on 98degree day.
Brakes ... you could out brake a fully loaded 121 car freight train ... most of the time.
Power ... did I mention it was a 490?
Better be pointed where you want to end up.

God it was fun!

I did the same when the alloy frame yz’s came out after reading all the reviews. I could not stand the ergos of the yz and the power being to much hit. Either lights the back wheel up or try’s to stand up

I’m in the minority as well. The 02-07 CR250r is a much better bike with some engine tweaks. Have owned a few YZ250’s from 02-11 models that were mediocre. Once dialed the CR will out shine the YZ in every category an mx bike is judged by.
I considered the 02-04 YZ a better option over the 05+ AF models.

Current ride: 05 YZ125
But to answer your question, I'll have to go with an 04 RM250.

I'd want my 03 YZ450 back. It had the motor of doom and I had the suspension dialed on the thing courtesy of Tech Care. It was a weapon on the sandy Michigan tracks.
with 4 gears and all that power you hardly needed to shift. Start in 2nd up to 3rd and you were good to on 90% of the tracks with zero fear of under jumping. Only issue was the shoulder sockets from the motor of doom.

From what I "hear" a steel frame YZ250 with 06' & up forks and shock outshine the aluminum frame models in every respect. Of course the guys telling me had them so.... take it for what it's worth lol That's a good score and worth hanging on to (imo)

09 yz450f- favorite bike I've raced mx on.

05'+ yz250- super fun bikes to ride on the offroad AND mx, 10+ year window of interchangeable parts, easy to make look modern, bulletproof motors, etc..

Thanks, this is my 3rd 04 Yz250. I sold the other two because I was not riding them and regretted my decision both times. Not selling this time around. I will be doing the suspension upgrade. The steel frames are way better in my opinion. You can feel it. I’ve owned 3 aluminum framed Yz250s. The last was a 2018. The steel frame turns better and absorbs the feedback from the track way better. I think the extra weight of the frame helps the bike feel more planted.

2012 KTM 250SX. Read all the reviews, most people agree it's the year KTM passed YZ 250. It came stock with Hydro clutch, oversized rotor, and V-Force reed valves. It has 50+HP. It was the first year KTM went with linkage in the suspension. It has dual ignition maps and variable power valve so you can easily tune the motor to exactly the feel you like.

It's the oldest bike you can buy that has all the current tech (except the counter- balance shaft).

Once the motor was dialed with some head work and port work, vForce, the motor was just awesome. The YZ motor is good, but not as good as the CR after mods. Do some mods to the YZ motor and look out, it's an excellent motor too. The ergos on CR feel better and the bike just feels right under you. The handling is by far better than the YZ. Turns better, and is as stable at speed as anything I've ridden. It inspired confidence. The harder you ride, the better it handles. The YZ is a good bike, but for me, the CR is heads and shoulders better.
