First time I saw him on the RN Suzuki at an early 70s Trans Ama, i was hooked on MX. Went home and put a 15 number plate on my SL Honda, and still run that race number to this day. As someone said, the original MX Badass, but a humble, wonderful person off the bike. Farewell, Champ.

A true legend. To win 6 world titles in the time he did it, with safety equipment and bike technology what it was, and with his unique lifestyle is just amazing.

However, Not to take anything away from him, but I did find this interesting

Wasn't J.N. Roberts the rider that did that jump in the great escape?

What a gift to have seen him race in his prime. Wow, what a talent. I was at that 1968 race at De La Veaga Park in Santa Cruz too, and remember it clearly, he just smoked the field. What a rocket, all aggression.

This is how I first 'met' Joël Robert... Went on to actually see him race in the latter stages of his career, riding a Puch.

RIP Joel, I never got to see him race but back in the early 80's at a USGP at Unadilla if I remember right he
took a parade lap on a SWM which was pretty cool to see.
Here is a photo I took of Joel at the 2006 MXdN at Matterley Basin , I think he was the team manager.

I saw him at Oran Park in either 1972 or 1973 ( I think he came over both years) with Roger Decoster, Bengt Aberg and a few Brit GP riders.

Went with my Dad and 2 Brothers. The Old Girl - Mum - was being the nasty piece of work she was (and, still is) and decided it was the one Sunday we had to go to 'Sunday School'.

The Old Man - Dad - knowing how she'd carry on, just got us into our Sunday clothes, and kept driving past the bloody Church and onto Northern Road, straight down to Oran Park (now it's just another enormous Suburban development) . The Old Girl, of course, wasn't going to Church.........

We got there, took off our 'good clothes' and watched an awesome day of MX.

Now, I was already a 'lifer' when it came to 2 wheels, and, I was the only one of my Brothers to really stay in the 2 wheel fold, but seeing the GP riders just hammer in the mud and enormous heat of that day, stunned me.

It's what got me totally hooked on Motorcycles for the rest of my life, and why I spend so much, getting overseas to see racing at its Highest levels.

Great story. Reminds me a bit of my Mums' antics. She wasn't an mx fan and whenever my Dad used to want to come and watch me ride she either found something that "had" to be done that day, or she'd insist it was going to rain and it was pointless him going (even in a heatwave).
In the end he just used to take her for a day out, and accidently-on-purpose end up near the track. "Oh, there's some orange arrows pointing down that lane, I wonder if that's where the mx is.?" She'd realise what was going on but it was too late lol..
