I didn't know he had an addiction problem, I just thought he was a dick.

Now that I hear this I feel bad for the kid, I don't think he had much guidance growing up from his parents from what I heard.

I hope he can accept some help to get well before he becomes Nico Izzi. That poor guy is in deep:

You still don't know if he has an addiction problem. Some anonymous poster named ROKKET just said so on an internet forum.

Did you see his videos from about 3-4 years ago. What did you think he was battling at the time ?

Two things don’t override all the shity things he did do to so many people.

They put themselves in that situation. Is all love and respect for recovered addicts, yet, people who have remained cleaned all their life, never get the recognition for their strong character and will.

You want a participation trophy for not doing drugs dude?? Go find your local DARE chapter.

Lots and lots of people start off on medicine prescribed to them and end up on smack.

Show me someone who's never done anything their entire life. Don't forget to include alcohol. People high and mighty because all they do is drink.

I know nothing about him anymore, but I hope so.

I really liked him as a kid and then around 16-17 he started buying into his rep and went overboard.

That's going to be a rough 4 years when "they" find out he's there for beating a woman.

Even those who have recovered will tell you it doesn't come down to strong will and character.

Suddenly it seems like Jlaw is an addict because some anonymous dude said so. It amazes what people will believe based on nothing but hearsay.

It actually does come down to a strong will and character. Finally getting to the point of saying enough is enough, and asking yourself, am I going to let this shit dictate who I am. Then making a choice to say I’m done with it all and becoming a better person. I’ve been clean 24 years and never once relapsed. It was my choice to move on and leave that shit behind. Unless you’ve struggled with addiction yourself, don’t try speaking for others. It was my will that made me want to be a better person and my character that said fuck no and fuck you time and time again.

Not that it is any of your business, but I have struggled with addiction. While a person has to want to stop, stopping does not "come down to a strong will and character". Besides that statement being an outright insult to the millions of people who struggle with addiction, it is contradicted by what science and evidence says about addiction. I can address that if you'd like since there is a large body of evidence to go by.

As far as character is concerned, almost 80% of women, and nearly 70% of men who have struggled with addiction report that they were either sexually or physically abused as children or young teens. Many people with PTSD, such as veterans, will turn to alcohol or drugs. In essence, there is a strong link between people who have experienced severe trauma and those who will turn drugs or alcohol. Did you know that abuse and severe trauma also changes the brain? It is ignorant to think it comes down to will power and strength of character. Besides the science that disputes those claims, go tell some person who was molested as a child that they just need to have more will power and a better character.

That statement was not meant as anything personal. It was the statement of even those who have recovered will tell you it doesn’t come down to strong will and character. I opened up and , used MYSELF as an example because you made a blanket statement. It took will to get through it and saying I’m out. I actually left California at 19 for Oregon to get away from friends and family that were putting coke and meth in front of me. I moved there to only become homeless and camp in the forest for four months to continue standing on my own two feet because I refused to go back. Nobody told my young dumb ass construction was seasonal and good luck in the winter. Plus, it rains every damn day. Never once did I think about drugs. I fished for food and gathered wood while living off $85 a week unemployment at 20 years old. I don’t need a pat on the back because those past issues made me who I am today.
My statements were about myself. If I struck a nerve an apology is in place but, the blanket statement seemed unfair.

There is no apology needed. I understand and commend you for what you have done, and perhaps I could have worded my statement a bit better. It certainly doesn't apply to everyone, but I would be comfortable saying that it applies to a good majority of addicts, and the evidence bears this out. There will always be different experiences and views. Thanks for your thoughts, and for sharing your experiences. This subject can bring out a lot of emotions for all of us so if I upset you, I apologize. Also, I am glad you are clean and did what you needed to do to get there. It's not easy. Smile
