My 2021 Husqvarna TC 250 (Two stroke fans only!)

To the guys that have current generation 250sx/tc, did any of you own older ones like a 2014/15/16? I own a 2015 250sx and i just can jell with it. Are the newer generation bikes wayyy better than my 2015?

Ive adjusted the powervalve, jetted the bike, changed the gearing and put a fly wheel weight on it. The bike also has a pro circuit system on it and factory connection revavlve for the previous owner. The previous owner weighed a little less than me, so I put in the proper springs for my weight and set the sag.

My 250sx feels like a power house lol. It feels like it doesnt give up much to my 19 kx450 lol. I will say that the tank/shrouds are much wider on my 250sx compared to the kx450. I will admit that I never spent much time on 2 strokes over my 15 years of ridding. When i got into racing 15 years ago, it was on a yz250f. Id considered myself a decent A/B vet rider, so i honestly feel like a dork when i try to ride my 250sx on a mx track lol.

The current generation feels incredibly refined. The 19 and up body work feels much nicer in the radiator shroud area to me than the 17-18 since it’s a bit narrower. Power delivery is really smooth and easy to ride for a 2 stroke, more of a mid-top motor than a top end screamer. The bike just does what you want it to with no surprises. If you like 2 strokes you can’t go wrong with the current 250sx. Definitely a more comfortable bike all around than previous generations in my opinion. I think the shock on my 19 is great as is with correct spring. The forks were just okay, depends on how picky you are. I haven’t tried the 21’s with revised aer’s but folks online seem to like them. if you’re considering buying one, go for it!

I had "12 ktm and a '14 husky (250ts) neither were comparable to the 2020. I do not know why, just that the 2020 is the only bike that was even close to my '08 YZ.

Thanks for the input, Jeffro. Did you have any difficulties / feel like you had to be way more aggressive on the 250 to keep up with the 450s? I know with the 450 I can be a little lazy or overcome mistakes but still clear jumps with that power--any decline there? My last 250 was an -04 CR250R, which had a big hit in the midrange, loved it until I hit my mid-50s, but then I found myself having to work so damn hard on it to keep up with the 450s that I went over to the dark side. Then last year I went to a dealer and sat on a TC250 and just fell in love.............

Yes , I did have to ride more aggressive ( Especially on the 125 ) to get a good lap around the track......But.....it gave me something in my rides , I had been missing for a long time. I couldn't push myself like that on a 450 , without gettinbg tired or damn near killing myself. My lap times were great on the 450 riding like that , but in a 20+ min moto? I felt like I was in survival mode for 14 minutes!

I can ride harder and way longer on my 2 strokes , then I can on the 450's. That is a fact. Some people are exactly the opposite of that. It all depends on your riding style I guess.

If I could put it one way , if I was to race myself on my 125/250 vs 450 , this is how it would go. Myself on the 450 would smoke myself on my 125 out of the gate , and probably the first 3 - 4 laps. Then by about the 6:00 mark , my 125 would start matching or beating my 450 lap times. Minutes 10 - 15 my 125 is reeling my 450 in by quite a bit per lap. By the end of a 20 minute moto , my 125 would be a good half lap ahead or more than my 450.

Before I hurt my hand at the big vet race last year , I was able to go full out for 20 mins strait. The 250 definitely not that long , but definitely way longer than my damn 450's. I have always been an aggressive rider , and I think that's why I fell back in love with the 2 strokes. The 450's , at my age , would not let me ride them like that , without almost killing me. The 450's are awesome , super fast machines. But here is the thing...........why do we need 60HP , when a lot of us only use 30 of it? That whole " Point and shoot " type of riding for me , got boring. Make me work for it , is what I was missing.
Did you prefer the white bikes to your RM and if so, why?

Both Seth 505 and I had 2013 KTM 250SX's that were pretty well sorted. Both of us now have current-gen bikes and agree they are head and shoulders better than the previous generation. Motor, suspension, power, handling, all of it.

I have a 2017 TC250 and Seth has a 2017 250SX fwiw.

This is my TC250 a bit ago. I've since added the full REP linkage along with factory wheelset and a bunch of bling shit. Next up will be factory triples & A-kit suspension. I decided last year this will be one of my 'forever bikes'.

Can you guys compare racing the TC250 to racing a 450? What is better, what you give up, etc? Almost pulled the trigger on a ‘19 TC250 but at my age (60 next year) wasn’t sure if I had to scream the 2T or am even able to after 7 years on 450s.

Hey Graybeard, figured I’d put in my 2 cents since that’s an interesting question. On the starts, with everything else being equal, the 450 rider is going to be in front at the turn. Secondly, you will have to ride two stroke style lines, less inside, more sweeping, and don’t slow down ever if possible. If you get sucked into riding the four stroke lines, I find they will beat you at that game. I feel like it can be really fun to ride a different kind of race than everyone else, but it can be difficult given that these days most of the lines and ruts favor four stroke bikes.
Duncster speaketh the truth. Lines can be tight on a two-stroke. I have pulled plenty of holeshots on 450s with my RM250 though.

The 2017 and newer feel way refined compared to the 2016 and earlier. I had a 2013 and with PC exhaust, minor mods it was a savage beast. Was a blast to ride but felt like it wanted to toss me just for fun when I got a little out of shape on it.

How do the newer bikes feel compared to the YZ? Think it would make a good woods bike?

I had a yz before the KTMs. All great bikes but I’d take a new ktm or husky over the yz with zero regrets.

Sooo before i completely gave up on the bike, i did some more reading as to what people were doing to this generation of 250sx. My jetting was spot on from Diggers recommendations. The next thing i looked at was the pro circuit exhaust system that i had on the bike.... most said to avoid the shorty silencer and thats what came on the bike. Luckily i was given the stock system with the bike, so I put the stock silencer on. It made the bike wayyy more rideable and not so abrupt. I have ridden this bike soley the last few times ive ridden and ive had a blast. I havent touched my 450 since.

One cornering issues i had in the past was the front end pushing too much. While doing some research, I found a few guys that said they were running 100mm to 102mm of sage. I was running 105mm and switched to 100mm and it fixed the push in the corners.

Aside from the wide tank/shroud area, im really enjoying this bike. Ive gotten so comfortable on it, that ive been hitting some trickier jumps sections on my track that I never did before with the smoker.

That bike is certainly worthy of "Forever Bike" status. The best-looking gen, in my opinion and once it is set-up like it sounds like yours is, why start over? Love the exhaust btw.

Why thank you. I got that pipe, silencer, skidplate, and tank cover off Jeffro. He laments selling it elsewhere in this thread :-p

Yeah on the 'Forever Bike' thing... I'm at an age and place in life (41) where I can now look at bikes in a new way. I can keep bikes I like and not have to sell every bike to fund the next bike. Helps I have a humungous shop/garage too. I look at that TC250, which is sublime, and look at the mods I already had in it (nothing crazy at the time, but still) and it's like.. do I really need to sell it on the used market $4,500? $5,500? Not get anywhere near the money I put into it back?

I look at a badass built 2005 KX250, or like a rad 1998 CR250. When they are built right and taken care of, they are still a joy to ride 20 years later... so that's how I'm now viewing the TC. I'm throwing the works at it, slowly (hell I bought the bike in 2016...), and in the end will have a bike 14 year old me only dreamed about. That's pretty cool and the reality is 5 years from now I'll be 46, 10 years I'll be 51... I'm pretty sure my loaded TC250 will still be blowing my socks off.

Shit I have a 2006 Yamaha R1 that's 15 god damn years old and it's unreal. Granted it's fully loaded also.... but every time I ride it I'm amazed at how ridiculously good that bike is. I track it too. Hangs just fine with 'modern' bikes for all but front of pack expert level racing (which I used to do on an R6). That bike gets more looks when I roll out to bike nights because it's unique. That's a neat feeling.

Anyway, cheers.

I'm riding a 2019 KTM 250SX and have put 310 hours on it doing local hare scrambles, enduros and a few motocross races. It's such a versatile bike. Here are the mods I've done which make the bike just perfect (for me):

- SXS brake calipers, incredible modulation, pairs perfectly with the instant on/off power of the 2 stroke
- Factory split triple clamps, provides the perfect amount of fork flex for the stiffer frames // sold mount bars
- Xact Pro (cone valve) fork/ Trax Shock. I'm pretty sure these bikes were designed with this suspension in mind
- Talon Ultralight hubs / A60 rims - the mud cleanout really works as advertised
- .75 base gasket - smooths out the bottom end, mid hits hard, top end is a joy to ride - perfect for HS/Enduros
- Pro Circuit exhaust
- V Force Reeds
- Guts lightweight seat (thanks Matthes for the discount code)
- Ti rear axle to try to offset some of the extra added weight
- A few other Ti bolts on things I frequently remove as it's easier to clean off the old Loctite and they don't corrode

These are "can do anything" bikes. Ultra fun.

Makes sense to me. I'm getting to that point myself, as I approach 40. I think the newer KTM/Husky 2strokes are the perfect bikes to mod however you want and to hold on to them. (you can even make a case for the YZs, which I own)

FWIW, I have an 06 R6 that I bought with the new redesign (have the book that it came with explaining the redesign etc) and I never want to sell it. If I get something else, I'll just add a new R1 to the garage. The 06 R1 will always be a looker.

I've done around 4 piston changes. Doing one next week.

Only one major rebuild at 255 hours:

- OEM Cylinder
- OEM crank kit (all the bearings)
- OEM gasket kit
- OEM piston and all the minor things like wrist pin
- OEM head and new washers/orings
- Vforce reeds

The guy who did the bottom end said that everything looked great and it did not need a new cylinder, crank, head or reeds. I did it just as a precaution.

I grease the linkage when I swap the suspension and try to do swingarm and steering head from time to time. I've gone through 3 seats as they sag after some time. Really it's been a great bike. The carb recently started giving me issues probably because of something I'm doing wrong. I know there's a gasket which goes bad--that's not the problem. I just ordered a Smart Cab to test.

Which silencer are you guys running on your SX and TC 250s?

I am looking at Pro Circuit and trying to decide between going with the Shorty or the regular length silencer.

Has anyone compared both? Curious on your findings.

Thanks!

PC regular length seems to be the popular one.

Shorty silencer kills the top end power. Longer silencer is better

PC 304 full length silencer on mine 18SX. It made a noticeable difference in overrev, just what I was hoping for. The performance increase was great, but I will say the fitment was horrible!! Like it missed an operation/bend on the stinger section. I got 3x different silencers from PC and all three where the exact same. When connected to the pipe, the rear silencer mount was almost 1.5" to low. I took the pipe off and mounted the silencer just by itself and the stinger inlet rubbed the cases at the kick-starter. PC was no help at all, they claimed my subframe was bent. I even sent them pictures of 3 different OEM silencers, an FMF 2.1, and FMF turbine core 2.1 mounted to the bike, all fit perfectly! Ultimately I made a jig and outlined the stinger section of my OEM silencer, then used a pipe bender to get the PC to mimic the OEM silencer. Guys at the track have said the fitment was better on their 19+ bikes, but still not great.

I would still buy the PC for again, purely for performance, but would go in knowing that the fitment might be subpar.

Thanks for the feedback !

What about the V Force Reeds? I know KTMs were coming with them stock for years but it doesnt seem like that is a thing these days.

Anyone tried the V-force 4R ? Any noticeable differences?

Rode the bike at the track yesterday and have to say that the way this bike finds traction is just amazing, it really feels similar to my 2017 450 SXF. KTM/Husky are doing something right with these 2 strokes!

I remember that there was some reed issues with the previous gen KTM/Husky 2-strokes when they came out in 2016, is that fixed now with the 2019-2021 bikes? Or would you recommend a VForce 4?

I'm kinda contemplating getting a leftover 2020 SX 250.
