Weird YZ490 build

Looks like a 2wd setup with the 18" front wheel and chains. Steering maybe done by tilting the rim more up to down than left to right.

It looks to me like steering is traditional left to right. The A-arm, drive, and brake assembly pivot along with the forks, and do not appear to be connected directly to the frame.

The only purpose the A-arm serves is as the world's most complicated chain tensioner -- keeping the chain length the same, even as the fork compresses.

Moving the brake to a drive idler near the rider's body parts is certainly a terrifying-looking choice. I am sure the drive system on the other side of the bike is equally terrifying

remember, looks tight enough right now, but gotta leave enough space around that brake to allow it to move lock to lock with the forks, which is probably pretty far out there when at full lock in either direction.

Early 90s...might have been 1990. But I remember MXA did a story on a 2 wheel drive bike, I’m sure it was a YZ 490 and I think it was built by a French company.

True, it was a Savard 2 x 2. A few brands have tried the concept, and I was curious myself, but from what I heard from a top rider is the 2 wheels drive were feeling a bit weird, it could be sketchy and the front was feeling heavy & tiring. I would love to try one just to see how it handles.

I liked mine. And there are plenty of people that did. It was a simple layout, and easy enough to modify however you wanted. And fast enough to get holeshots against the mighty CR500 and KX500s.

Definitely HAD to modify them. No way to keep them from detonating with stock combustion geometry. I don't think "fast enough" was ever really the issue on pretty much any 500.
