Dirt Bike Insurance

On a sort of related note.... if you have any significant assets, you should look into an umbrella policy that has coverage which at least equals your net worth. Let say your bike or auto policy limits are 100K. Your house is worth 300K. You hit someone in your car (or bike)....you get sued for damages/etc exceeding the auto/bike policy l imit. An umbrella policy steps in and covers above and beyond your auto/bike policy limits. These days, you're going to get sued if you have any assets. Umbrella policies are not that expensive.

I have progressive. As other have said it is void during travel To/From and during closed course riding areas/competitions. Geico said the whole policy is void if you even ride one practice day. I talked to many progressive agents and managers and they confirmed as long as your not traveling too/from or are actively participating on closed coarse riding the bike is covered. I would have liked better writing on the policy but this was the only company that would insure the bike at all in Michigan. All other companies I talked to flat out said no if I ride any closed course.

I contacted Progressive about covering 3 of my bikes. Although the price was really good, he said that if I had a claim such as total loss from theft or fire, the insurance company will determine the value at the time of loss. How can I be sure that I can get a fair value without a declared value policy, which they don't offer?

Progressive is great & you get a additional no charge $3000 accessory policy for your add on parts are covered. I had to use mine like 8 years ago when my Ktm got stolen. It's well worth the $90 a year I pay.
Did they give you current market value or did they make you whole?

Allstate $60 a year per bike. Nothing is better then taking front wheel inside when stored though.

They go by kbb value,. Better take pictures, keep receipts off any add on parts,. And bump your premium up. To get it all covered.

Mine is covered as part of my renter insurance.

I take extreme precaution when traveling with it. It never leaves my sight and if I have to spend the night somewhere, it locked up in a friends garage, or in the hotel room with me.

Anyone cover MTB’s?

If they use KBB value then all is good. How do I add to bump the premium?

Call them. Add value of parts ,add ons. Etc. If you dont have receipts and pictures. You will only get kbb .

I have Progressive for my dirt bikes and Hagerty for my roadrace bike (Kramer HKR 690). Coverage is very affordable. I have had 4 motorcycles stolen (the first one was a total write off ... a 97 CR250 that had < 5 hours on it). After that experience, have been insured. With Hagerty, I have the coverage for a specific $ value given it is a rare bike.

I contacted Hagerty about covering my 3 vintage dirt bikes and they said they don't offer it.

Man it must suck to live your life like that, assuming everyone is out to get you.

I called a local insurance broker. Ended up with Foremost for like $70/yr on my 14 YZ250.

As someone said above, please do not rely on oral statements from an agent or insurance rep on what is/is not covered. Your policy contains an "integration clause" that says the whole agreement is contained in the policy document. If something is not in there, it's not part of the deal, even if a rep told you the opposite. And you will never win that coverage battle with the insurance company.

It varies by state and insurance company
As others have stated, some will use KBB value (others will use NADA as a book value)
if they dont use book value, they use 3rd party companies to determine market value, who will use comparable vehicles for sale, or dealer opinion on the value

I've used Markel for years. I cross shop pricing every other year and they always offer me the best rate and are VERY reputable in the motorcycle world. The Markel motorcycle insurance business unit used to be bikeline.com and the only insurance they sold was motorcycle. Good outfit.

You’d be surprised how many people live like that. Some of my relatives are paranoid to the max!

I’ll vouch for Markel too. I’m an insurance broker and Markel is very reputable and easy to deal with.

@O&GDriller...That website wants your name, address, date of birth and SS number! I may as well give them my banking account number too!! I don't think so.

I called Markel and they gave me a good quote. $136 for three bikes.

Forgot to note, with my Hagerty policy, i added coverage for transport and anything that would happen in the pit. It basically doubled the cost from ~$100 per year to $200, but given the value of the Kramer ($20k+), well worth it from my perspective.

I've mentioned this before but State Farm doesn't care. My agent told me "racing for a trophy or a six pack, it's all good".

That's how insurance works. You won't get a stayed value unless it's something like a classic car.

What you just asked are both the same thing. Current market value is making you whole.

Yeah I wouldn't trust what your agent tells you either 9 out of 10 has no idea how those policies read. You better read it yourself.
