If I remember correctly that is what they did when Brian Moreau broke his spine, "Just asking them to get up" and drag him off like a rag doll. So I'm sorry that I have my doubts with the way they handled Forkner when he landed head first into the berm.

So you were on the track with the doctors and Brian? Yeah, I didn't think so.

I agree with this post. You weren't there.

Those guys check for that.
Are you educated on that incident at all?

Does anyone have an update? The lack of news, Is not always positive. I really hope the spleen rumors are not true.

Which is the outcome of a splenectomy? Is it a full recovery with normal life?

Forkner needs a new coach, someone needs to reign him in a bit. Clearly the fastest dude on the track but also most consistent crashes out of the top guys. Would be good him to see him take 1 step back on speed and I bet he lasts longer and ends up going faster in the long run. I think Nick Wey would be a great fit for him on all fronts.

The dude was going WFO trying to win the race to win a championship. I say kudos for trying to get er done.... I would much rather crash out trying for a championship than just sit in 3rd and do nothing.

Hope Forkner has a quick recovery and is back up to speed and winning again soon.

But are not going to talk about the 6 pack shaved into the belly hair?

Can anyone with industry friends make some calls and at least find out if he’s okay? I understand radio silence from being bummed on losing the title, but a lot of people are worried about the guy

Crazy to think that Webb and Forkner's crashes were virtually identical but the result was so much different

Lets all hope he is just mad and bummed about it and keeps silence, and will be fired up for outdoors just like AC last year.

Outdoors will be some much better with him on the line.

Just a little question: Why don't we put all riders who stay down on stretchers, fully immobilized from head to toes? How many spinal injuries do we need till that becomes the norm?
Probably not a bad idea just for extrication purposes.

When they were discussing taking mine out they basically told me that I could live pretty normally, but because the spleen filters your blood my immune system would be compromised. This is going back over 10 years now so there may be other complications I’m forgetting about, but I think that was the main concern.

Crazy thing is I can still feel the scar tissue on mine stretching occasionally. It’s gotten less and less frequent as time passes, but still every now and then I get a weird pain in that area that pulsates similarly to it did when it first ruptured, just not nearly as intensely. Internal injuries are scary as hell and can be a roller coaster ride day to day at first, still hoping that was false news.

mine almost took my life, i didn't go to the hospital for about 4 hours after my crash. my ribs were sticking out like i had a basketball under my shirt, i was bleeding out internally and Dr told me i could have passed out at any minute and not woken up.

as for the recovery, it was over a year before i felt physically fine on a bike. about 6 months of intense pain when i did anything besides lie down.

i really hope a splenectomy wasn't what he has gone through.

Splenic bleeds (arterial) can be life threatening. If the spleen has to be removed, you will live a normal life but with a slightly compromised immune system.

A ruptured spleen killed our niece at 19. Quad crash, bled out internally before they could get her to a hospital. Our boy bruised his at 9 when he got taken out on a start. That was the day we decided that racing wasn't in the cards for us. Not worth it.

Damn thats rough.. I would be thinking along the same lines for my son if i had to endure that. Dont worry big man, as long as they are still riding they are still getting the "thrill".. I dont race anymore either for the same reason.

Had my spleen removed in 2009. It’s not anything anyone wants to go thru. The surgery wasn’t too bad but the recovery sucked. And still makes me a little nervous when it comes to flu season and making sure i keep my immunity up

I ruptured my spleen in 2018 and was in the ICU for 2 days while they monitored my hematocrit level. If it continued to drop, the spleen would have to be surgically repaired and possibly removed. I was fortunate in that mine slowed the bleeding and "fixed" itself. 3 months with noting strenuous and had to do ultrasounds to determine when it was healed completely. 4 months later I was able to mountain bike again.

In summary, if Forkner ruptured his, he is definitely not doing outdoors which would be a bummer.

I had a stage 3 laceration to my spleen in a novice pile up at a CNY sand track. Sucked balls, was on my 17th birthday and ruined my senior year of football.

I got hit by a car by a crazy old man and thrown about 25 feet just after I turned 12. The guy got out, said "Stay down there. That's where you belong!", then drove off. The only reasons I can think of for him doing that were that he was either drunk, on drugs, or in 1974, didnt like the fact that I had long hair.

Besides my other injuries, they kept an eye on my spleen for a few days. The doctors said it's like butter, and if it's damaged, it doesn't repair, they just remove it. I got lucky and got to keep mine.
They never caught the old man.

While I agree Reed would make a great coach, I can’t see him gelling with Forkner’s seemingly entitled attitude.

Perhaps that would change after a few months with a self made man...
