Can someone please explain to me what RC and Ralph mean when they compare Kenny and Tomac saying KR has raw talent but Tomac has raw speed?

I hear this comparison a lot and it’s never made sense to me.

They’re probably equating finesse with talent and aggression with speed. It’s a stretch, but might make sense if your job is to talk continuously for hours on end.

One is speed, while the other is talent. Both raw.

JS259 had both. When you look at talent but lack of speed Christian Craig comes to mind. One of the best styles out there but just not as fast as the titel champs

Don’t know how you can call either ‘raw’ when you’re talking about the skills of professionals who have devoted their lives up until this point to honing those skills.

The announcers are paid to talk. When they don’t have a logical or accurate description of an event, they make one up.

One rides the whoops in 3rd gear hammering them, the other rides the whoops in 4th gear floating through them!

It’s a completely arbitrary way of describing the riders in which the average viewer will have no idea what the fuck that means.

I don't know what is so hard to understand.

Raw talent is a guy that is smooth and flowy and hits everything textbook and precise. Sometimes that's Kenny's downfall, if the bike isn't right he has a hard time going away from a textbook perfect riding style/body positioning and overcoming it.

Raw speed is a guy that just blitzes everything and you wonder how the hell they hung on. Eli has raw speed and when it comes to a track that requires finesse he will struggle more than Kenny. To me that is what made Sunday's race so impressive, that track was slicker than owl poop and throttle control and smoothness was key.

A track that required fines and who won? Did you see how many times tomac was drifting the corners? I’d say tomac has great throttle clutch control when he needs it.

Tomac for a couple laps reverted to his old normal ways, started going backwards, but pulled it together and went to the front. You have to admit it doesn’t normally happen that way for him.

I think that was some coming of age stuff we witnessed last Sunday.

Usually when you hear raw talent, it's in relation to a rider being smooth, precise and fast, making it look effortless. Kenny does this but typically where his advantage is lies in lines in a rough track – I think it will improve on his next bike too.

When they talk about raw speed or aggression it's usually smashing in to stuff etc.

Weird thing with Eli is, people say he smashes shit, but I always felt you could see his MTB roots when he's really on, hops around, makes jumps out of things, moves his bike quite a lot and detroys turns with both feet up. He does overjump shit, but it's usually because it's faster. That little double out of a turn last round before the big double. Everyone is downsiding it, going slow. Eli jumped to the transition – didn't slow down as much, didn't lose any speed going up it and accelerated through.

For sure! And that could be a real problem for everyone else.

Everyone I talk to disagrees with the mtn bike side of it. I agree with you 100%. I think his downhill skills plays a huge roll in his riding.

They both rode a shit load apparently – I've heard Lechien almost dispute the talent thing because he just saw it as a result of ridiculous bike time, and wasn't Magoo famouse for burning fuel?

Just how it's delivered in the end, smooth or ragged, ala KW and RC, all rode an awful lot!

ET is smashing the face of the next jump constantly, Ken downsides smoothly. Which style is better? One looks faster at the moment..

Sillier than the comparison of talent/speed is a narrative in which the attributes of two of the most developed athletes in the sport, each with tens of thousands of hours spent refining their craft, are in any way "raw"
