I have always loved the 1999 McGrath bike and was searching for close to a year for a cheap donor bike. I found this one on Craigslist for $500 and the engine was locked up. I show up to the kids house and take a look at the bike and it has an old AMA Pro Racing sticker on it. I’m located outside of Charlotte NC. I get home and start researching who’s bike it was. Had zero luck on researching the tech sticker. The bike was essentially a roller with the motor already out of it. I tore the engine down vapor blasted it and rebuilt it and left the chasis alone. This was supposed to be a winter project then I had to have knee surgery so I was out of the count for 8 weeks. When I got better I dove into the chasis when I pulled the seat off it has Neese wrote in sharpie under the seat so I’m pretty sure it was Jim Neeses old Supercross bike. I started trying to get cool parts and tracked down a GYTR subframe, than found the billet clutch perch and levers, bought a set of KYB forks that McGrath used, then the build got a little out of control. (Having surgery left me with a lot of time looking for parts)

Anyways it’s on the home stretch now and here’s some before during and where the bike is

Like pics of strip downs when they also have the rebuild pics as always frown at the mess some bikes are in, scares me that people are riding with them in that mess

Yeah this was in bad shape. When I went through the older pictures now it’s hard to believe anyone was riding it. Forks were pogo sticks with blown seals and blow wheel bearings. It was in pretty rough shape but was a good donor bike

Where did you source the subframe and forks?

Sweet build.

The '99 was my favorite looking McGrath Yamaha as well.

The white airbox was 2000 though.

Awesome!! I wanted to do something similar with my 98, but decided on a Bradshaw tribute. Can’t wait to see this finished

Great job! The 99”s were really good bikes....I had one brand new. Did you vapor blast the airbox? Where did you get the clamps attached to the bench holding the loose forks? I have been wanting to do this in my shop forever.

I did Vapor blast the air box with aluminum oxide. Those Fork holders were at Art of War suspension. I had Johnny go through the forks to make sure they were right. That was a picture he sent me when they were ready. I can ask where he got them.

That's so nice, I'd be afraid to ride it!

Everybody should have a YZ250 or 2. So park that one somewhere in the house just to look at.

Then find another, make it about Half as nice, and have your way with it.

Yeah that’s the plan for this. It’s going to be retired to my office. I had art of war Suspension go through the forks and rebuild them and he told me the fork seals in those forks are unobtainable so if they blow out it will be tough to get new ones. I have a pretty legit Barcia championship Bike in my office. This bikes new home will be right next to it.
