Alpinestars don't last for shit though, I generally get a year out of my tech 5's and then replace them
I went otb after overshooting a jump and landing into the face on the following roller
Lacerated my liver and was bleeding out internally, was rushed to trauma and spent 5 days in the ICU
Lesson learned - I’ll never ride without a chest protector.
Make sure to save some boot & helmet money for vital organ protection as well.
We wear the best boots made and the best knee braces and we brake more femurs and dislocate more hips than ever before. The natural give in our joints are there for a reason. Maybe our bodies weren't designed for stadium whoops but the laws of physics says energy has to go somewhere. Maybe our body protective gear needs to be designed like helmets, not stop the transfer of energy but slow it down to a manageable level.
Obviously, high end boots cost more partly because they have the latest technology from a safety perspective, so theoretically, I agree it's a good investment to get better boots. As others have said, spend your money on boots, helmet, knee braces, gloves etc., even if it means sticking with the stock exhaust system.
HOWEVER, there's a few counterpoints to consider.
1. A boot that's too stiff or doesn't fit correctly may make a beginner crash more.
2. A top-of-the-line boot from one brand may not be as safe as a mid-level boot from another
3. The biggest factor, just like helmets, is buy the best one you can afford to replace. I've seen too many guys who buy an $800 helmet, and then keep racing in it for years through multiple big crashes because they invested so much. Boots are the same.
I'm not an A grade rider but I got every jump on every track I go to. One thing is I don't ride on the balls of my feet, especially when jumping. I always have the arches of my feet on the pegs when jumping so maybe this helps when landing off a big jump in less stiff boots.
Pit Row
This is what happened to my son's foot while wearing alpinestars
The stupid looking hinged plastic braces on the sides of the inner bootie are annoying, the inner one in the right boot was digging I to my ankle bone so hard I could barely walk..I had to hacksaw through the rivets and get rid of it...fixed that problem..
I was really struggling to decide what to buy...had a pair of Jett boots for many years, but they are falling apart and I can't find parts and can't find new ones except from the USA via eBay and the cost was way beyond reasonable .
I just bought the tech 10's out of frustration..can't really walk into a shop and try any on around here..
Anyway the tech 10 clod hoppers weigh a ton and are super stiff..they are run in now but they are just too much...
I just can't ride my 125 properly with those things on...just makes my gear shifts too clumsy.
Was in a shop this week and they actually had a set of the new Thors in my size...tried them ..bought them..
I haven't actually weighed the boots but they are noticibly lighter than the tech 10's and significantly less bulky
While the tech 10' are without question more protective...they are just too restrictive and heavy for me.
Will have my first ride in the Thors tomorrow.
The tech 10's cost $750 and the Thors cost $399
Also did a track re water both days,, dragging hoses around , in them...all good, but most importantly, I can ride my 125 so much better in them than the tech 10's ,it's ridiculous! It's also looking like the sole on the Thors are going to be a lot tougher and resist footpeg wear a lot better...
If I were going to be casing a big triple on a sx track ( never gonna happen ) yeah... I'd rather be in the tech 10's, but for general motocross use...I'll take the Thors all day.
For me...the tech 10's have been nothing more than a $750 mistake 😥😥
I'll never go the cheaper route on safety equipment ever again.
