1984, Saturday Saddleback got the hole shot in the 250 pro moto got passed by Ricky Johnson in Webco about 25 minutes into the moto I got passed by RJ. At the 45 minute mark I get the white flag and the flag man has the checkered flag in his other hand went through the finish turn and got passed by Jim Tarantino. I got back to my truck after the race and asked my brother how far back was RJ when I got the white flag? He said that RJ was about 5 seconds behind Jim Tarantino! It blew me away that if the moto was 46 minutes I would have been lapped twice and Tarantino would have been lapped once.

Man, I get lapped at every Canadian national. But am always amazed at how fast the top guys go. I always learn something from them.

Back when at Carlsbad and I am in the Vet Int. class on the second gate. All Pros are on the first gate and Damon Bradshaw happened to be in town.

"Cool!" I thought. I'll get a chance to see him go by and learn something in that 1/10 of a second.

As it happened, I fell in a snotty turn over in the back section. I'm laying there in the mud, trying to get up, IN the racing line, right as Bradshaw comes by. He never lets off, misses me by inches and just ROOSTS THE EFFING HELL out of me. Hahahahahhahahahahahahah

Andrew McFarlane, Micky Cook and Takeshi Katsuya all in the one race haha
But the real story was
It was 1996 (ish) I was about 18, riding 250's and it was my first race in 'B' grade which happened to be a Queensland (state) title race which they were running B and A together.. I was also racing my big brother for the first time, he was in A and he told me not to be surprised when the leaders come around to lap me, and to not to freak out when he did (he was serious not talking trash)

Cut to the second lap and I was going around the outside of him on his old bike to finish 8th overall and first in B grade haha.. Beat him, nay flogged him! Suck shit ya dickhead haha Still get mileage out of that..

But anyway still got faaarken hosed by the pros and still remember being shocked by the noise of Sharky's bike revving it's tits off, cause I surprised when the leaders came around to lap me haha I got WELL out of the way for the others

Oh yeah forgot about Stanmore, never rode it, missed a few years on the scene around them. Thought you might have been talking about Tivoli. Certainly remember Sharky, Cookie & Taka doing some laps though 👍

In the mid-70's I decided to go race one weekend in California. I went out with a buddy for morning practice at the Saturday Saddleback race.

I thought I was doing pretty good until a pack swarmed me going waaay faster than I was, rocking me to death. I caught a brief glimpse of the backs of some of the jersey with names like Hart, Mosier, Karsmakers. DeSoto, etc.

I quickly returned to reality....

Early 2000's, at Glen Helen, wasnt jumping the big table due to all the ruts that formed not just on the lip but on the landing. You were landing in 50ft long ruts! No thanks! I was an expert 125/250 rider hoping to turn pro in the near future...Well as I was braking into the face of the table, I heard a screaming mini behind me.... and then on top of me! I look up and this little dude on a kx80 just jumped over me, clearing the table and railing through the ruts on the down side. I glanced at the jersey and it said "Villopoto". Needless to say, I almost quite racing for good that day.

2012 Montreal SX, I had a hairline fracture in my wrist from qualifying but I wasn't turning down the chance to race with those guys. I was running in a transfer spot during the heat race but had a collision in the whoops and went down hard. The entire top 5 lapped me. Thomas Brown was nice enough to tell me I was the best lapper out there though, the only guy who got out of the way. So that's something...

Not lapped in a race (although it would have happened if they let him out there), but a little dude on a little green bike rocking the 259 humbled a lot of guys in FL in the mid-to-late 90's. My intro was during a 125 practice session while he was on a 65, I believe. He came blowing through the field, standing up in nearly all the corners, and put everyone to shame. I didn't know who he was, at the time, and was surprised to see a little bike out there; when I saw how fast he was going, it made more sense. To say he is naturally gifted is a massive understatement.

Glen Helen 1999. Was in peak physical shape, and ripping the crap out of my buddies YZ 250 passing anyone and everyone in my path on an open practice day. I felt ready to go all in and make the jump to try and be a pro at that point. Then all of a sudden, I heard something behind me screaming. My bike was screaming to the rev limiter, yet this scream was something like blasting a Slayer album at maximum volume with your ear up against the speaker.

Low and behold, Jeff Emig rails past me as if I was standing still. I honestly had a moment of "what the F***K was that", followed by "who the F***K could be going that fast when I'm one of the fastest dudes on this track right now!" Only when I let it all out to follow him for 3 corners or so to the point where I clearly knew I was riding past my limit did I see the back of his jersey..."11 EMIG". Thats when I knew that I'd never be at that level. It was a real eye opener into how incredibly fast that next, pinnacle level of dudes were.
One month later, I crashed over a big step down double at a private track and completely tore my knee apart. Nail in the coffin for me and my dreams / ambition to try and go pro. I was actually relieved of that feeling/desire/fear that to get to that next level I HAD to go as fast as he was going that day because it's just incredibly humbling and scary. Decided to go to college. The end. Silly

I've told this story here before. It was a practice session for a District 36 MX up at E street in Marysville. Dick Mann on his TT 500 came up on me, passed me and was gone in the blink of an eye. I tried to keep up with him, but he was soon out of sight. That dude was FAST and he was no youngster either at the time - around 1979-80.

British championship rider at the time Richard Mike Jones in 2003, doing a local race to keep his hand in or something. It was actually really depressing, I mean he was just so freaking fast it was unbelievable.

The track was garbage really. Blue groove (real blue groove) all the loose dust pushed wide and ridiculously slick everywhere else. It was his corner speed. He'd go wide and use the powder as you'd expect but could also sort of 'speedway' the bike across the slick stuff at an unbelievable speed - and he'd somehow get the grip and just somehow get away with it... Idk. It didn't make sense to me with physics. Crazy to think that he was far from the best there was when you thought of the top GP and AMA guys at the time...

I got over any bs notions right then that I was ever going to make something in MX.

Ive had the chance to ride with some pretty fast folks, but the craziest story I have is probable when Robbie Reynard jumped over/passed me at his track in OK (this was before he bought it, think it was called Welston). There was a table top that the landing sent you to a downhill with a small roller at the bottom of it. I knew he was behind me but was figuring he had to shut off for the table top, like any common man would. I let off, his bike was still pulling. I will never forget landing from the table top, looking up at him, he's looking down at me, and watching him land perfect on the little roller at the bottom and rocket out of site. That was a "no way" moment. When you see what these top level guys can do it really blows your mind.

Living in the eastern great white north we do not get the chance often to ride with top american rider.
1- Back in 2013 I went to Socal for 4 weeks (turn out 2 weeks and a half after I broke my legs at the World Vet...). I went to Zaca Station. Josh Grant was there with the Transworld crew to film the segment with JG33 for the movie flow. I never felt soooo slow. I had the chance to chat a bit with Maeda and JG33 on the side of the track because the track was close to take care of a injured rider. I was amazed to chat like buddy with theses peoples. Later in the day in the second step up of the famous step up line of Zaca JG33 jumped right on my side doing an insane whips and looked at me right in my eyes... Pretty cool moment jumping side by side with JG33... He went then by me like my brakes were jam...

2- I thing in 2013 when Josh Hill did the Canadian National. There was a pratice the wednesday and couples of pro was there including also Alessi. Ulverton is.... was know to be a fast, natural (kinda of Unadilla of the great white north IMO). They both went by WTFO in a rough right turn while I was strugling to keep speed and it's usually the king of track where I look the best. I couldn't understand how their brains can process soo much so quick... Maybe they don't process anything...

Pretty cool experience.

I watched Taka race the nationals few years ago.. really cool dude! I remember on the start like his mechanic would start his bike. Give it two quick revs then just hold it on the limited for like 5 seconds and every was just looking at each other like wtf??? Apparently that’s the starting routine he does all the time

Not lapped but run over, Southwick 91 morning practice. Tucked the front end in the sand and went down, split second later I'm run over and rolled into a ball and dragged down hill. After the impact I'm getting up and look down hill and see the #2 Honda Jeff Stanton on the ground. Shot me a look ? My bad ......

Day In The Dirt a few years ago, Coup de Gras race, probably almost an hour into it, I think I’m going great, then Weston Peick and Zach Osborne split me in the s turns jumping across berms inside and out, flying past me like I was a damn hay bale!
