Just to start off I want to say that I know all bikes have problems and that Yamahas are known to be reliable, I understand that I just got a lemon. I want to see if anyone has similar experience and what Yamaha did to help. With that said my 2019 Yz450f with 34 hours on it since I bought it brand new just completely shit the bed to the tune of 6300 bucks. The dealer said it was so mangled they can't even tell which part went first. Oil and filter were always changed at no more than 5 hours. I was wide open in an uphill roller section when the bike locked up and threw me otb, no real warning signs before it went. I should hear back to see if Yamaha is going to help tomorrow, but I'd like to know how much they have helped others in my situation. If they're not gonna help at all I guess I'll just part it out and buy a KTM, sss forks anyone?

Not a 450 but this is a yzf250 2019 with 17hours , Yamaha wouldn't warrant anything

I’m a Yamaha guy but how the hell does that happen in 17 hours?

Competition motorcycle, sold "as is" with no warranty. If Yamaha does anything, it will be out of the kindness of their hearts.

If you carried insurance on it (which is a must nowadays with bikes running $10k) I would just go through your insurance who will then total you out

Uh that’s now how insurance works 😂😂😂. Sudden and accidental, not mechanical failure. Might need to read your policy again.

Seems to be quite a bit of 19 YZ250F and 450F issues going on lately. Wonder what has changed If anything cause usually Yamaha are as solid as a rock. But the new 250F is quickly getting a bad rap as unreliable by many accounts. The 450 on the other hand other than battery and starter issues have seemed pretty solid.....odd too see so many Yamaha issues

Big problems with 19 250fs I also know a guy that had 2 timing chains snap on 19 250s with less than 30 hours and a complete gearbox go, no parts available in the UK or Europe he had to wait 10 weeks. Both guys have bought ktms now, one had to sell the bike as a rolling chassis as it needed a whole new motor

With no reported changes for 20 you can expect more of the same I would think. It’s just strange cause they are arguable the best 250F in class and so sought after, but if they are prone to blowing that’s rough.

34 hours is a fair bit of riding. Not saying there was anything wrong with your maintenance but from the mfg point of view, you can do a lot of damage in 34 hours. Unfortunately for you i dont think there'll be much of a case for warranty on this one.

Yamaha isn't going to warranty anything with 34 hours on it.

Unfortunately your more than likely right. Although no stock 450 should blow at 34 hrs. Even with a modest maintenance schedule they should last much longer with no issues in today’s bikes.

Yamaha dealer told a friend of mine buying an MX bike is just like getting a wife. They may be pretty, a blast to ride, but come with no warranty. You get it, it's yours......and getting rid of one usually comes with a good loss in order to move onto the next one.

That may be Yamaha stance, and I’ve read many accounts of Yamaha telling them to stuff it. But I have personally seen Honda, and Kawasaki footing the bill for mechanical failure on bikes and standing behind their product. But I do believe dealer/customer relationship played a key role in the outcomes. But non the less they took care of it. But I have heard Yamaha is less likely to play ball when it comes to “warranty” work.

Blows my mind that a company wouldn't hook it up on parts (and even a discounted shop rate) in a situation like this. Eating the cost on some parts, which would cost the customer thousands, would go a long ways at making them want to keep buying $10k machines. A lifetime customer in a niche market for a few hundred bucks seems like a no brainer, especially considering there are many equal or better options.

As much as i like my Yamaha i agree. From everything that i have gathered, Yamaha is not the best with these kind of situations. Although getting help after 34h of riding is a stretch.

But if this happens on a KTM or Husky, you'll get a new engine.

Yamaha replaced my '15 motor that had 91 hrs when the rod snapped taking out both cases, crank, cylinder, piston, counterbalancer shaft and parts in the transmission. Amazingly, the head was untouched. They even upgraded everything to 2016 parts and added the oil sprayer for '16 and the counterbalancer weights, which were changed between yrs. When I told them if they send me the parts I'll put the motor together myself, they jumped at that in a second.

I get that every situation is different and not all issues are going to be resolved the same or satisfactory to one's liking... But, they certainly did me right!

Call Yamaha direct & start a claim, don’t be an asshole to the customer service rep. Give them an opportunity to help you, even if it’s a parts allowance, it’s better than nothing. I had a 2 year old 2006 Yz450 grenade the transmission, after a few phone calls, we agreed on a parts allowance at my dealer, it covered the parts, I handled the labor. Needless to say, I spent a few years back on a 2 stroke after that....

Where are all the people who say the 4 strokes are reliable. Where are the people who called me out for riding 2 strokes due to the cost.

Sorry about your luck. I had an issue with a new 2004 YZ250. Yamaha canada would do nothing. Not even a parts credit. It was my last Yamaha.

They are reliable. .5% of bikes that grenade in less than 50hrs dont hold any water for an argument that theyre not reliable.

At 34 hours ? You sure about that ?

Maybe at 1-3 hours. But I don’t think ktm or husky is “giving” you an engine at 34.

I have seen it with my own eyes, a friend of mine got one when it (sxf250 2016) exploded at 30h. But like i said, 30-35h is a stretch.

Anything under 20h and the chances are good that KTM will take care of it if the failure isn't down to user error.

You would be very wrong in your statement about KTM not giving an engine! Technically, yes, but they do rebuild the whole engine with new parts.

Write a letter.... email it to a Yamaha CO, explaining what happened. Be sure to tell them your love for the brand... CO would then contact local Yamaha rep to handle everything through your local Yamaha dealer.

This is a proven route, just search out the right contact.

Yamaha is going to want to work with your dealer. At best, they'll cover parts IF you pay the dealer labor. Plan to be without your bike for a while unless the dealer wants to be top notch with you. From what my roomate went through with his 2018, if i were you i'd have the bike fall out of the back of my truck, claim it, and go buy another color.

We have run Suzuki's and Yamaha's for over 30 years from amateur to pro with no major engine failures. The failures we see are from people using a cheap oil, not changing oil often enough and not keeping a clean air filter in it or not servicing and checking the bike often enough. See the chart posted earlier in this thread. That's not to say there aren't problems because with anything mechanical there will be failures.

Yamaha has been good about helping with parts and we have gotten customers help when other dealers either couldn't r wouldn't. Calling Yamaha customer service is a good first step but Yamaha will want the bike at a dealer so they can inspect the bike and get their take on what happened and why.

Good luck.

My 18 YZF450 went through a motor at 6 hours. Put in a whole new motor straight from Yamaha and within 10 hours the starter clutch went. Another 12 hours the timing chain skipped timing and was completely warn out, the cylinder needed to be replaced, the valves were all out of spec, and it needed another starter clutch. I repairs/parts/labour almost cost what a new bike was worth. It was the biggest pile of junk I’ve ever owned (previously owned 8 new Yamaha’s before that).

My vet riding buddy also went through a very similar experience with his. New motor, several starter clutches, etc.

We got F all from Yamaha.

I’m now on a 19 CRF450 and he’s on a 18 FC350

I had a similar experience as well on my 2018 YZ 450. Starter clutch went at 10 hours and my engine made it to 20 hrs before the oil squirter decided to break off and wreck havoc. Yamaha did cover the parts cost except I had to go through a local dealer and pay labor.
