You cannot be serious? If it is so simple, why in the world are you typing BS on Vital? You should be the head engine designer for an F1 team. Or go work for Mitch, his riders need some help clearing Larocco's Leap.

You strike me as being about as intelligent as a bag of hammers.

As someone that works in the automotive engine world doing engine system simulation, calibration, and testing - what you said was about as overly simplified as saying "working out makes you more athletic". That's easy if you take a couch potato (or engine, like DRZ400) and make him run 3x per week. But what if you're starting with a pretty high performance athlete (i.e. a high-strung MX bike) what would you tell him to do to increase performance?

There are a lot of "rules", like increasing compression ratio = more efficiency/power, more valve lift/port area = more airflow, etc that don't work in real life. There are a lot of counter-intuitive behaviors of engines that take more than a "guess and check" approach to testing, and actually take some analysis.

The Dunning Kruger effect comes to mind... Plant that flag and fly it high!

How much money in ruined cylinders, heads and hacked pipes would it take to learn to do it yourself? Way cheaper to pay someone who knows what they're doing. Not to mention you would need a dyno and maybe a flow bench. I can't imagine those are affordable for the average racer/ rider mechanic.

I'm with the guy that obviously couldn't figure out his 4cs forks. Macgyver once built a world class supermini with nothing more than a chisel, medium sized paper clip, soldering gun, and 3 gum wrappers.

Hmmm....interesting societal observation this Kruger Dunning work. Think we see this often referenced with "here, hold my beer...". Ha! Wonder how the dirt bike enthusiast focus group came out?

Engineers at Honda, Yamaha, KTM right now: "Wait... MORE air and fuel? Genius! Why didnt we think of that?"

Interestingly enough the jetting spec I was provided for a Harris yz250 cylinder to start was around 10 points lower than stock.....

I’m not saying the cylinder and ignition spec wouldn’t of made good power that way, because I wouldn’t know due to my issues but none the less.

Im currently 10 points greater than stock with the builder I ended up using.

Whatever dude. I am a very successful business man that got successful by knowing my own limitations and knowing who to hire to fill in my knowledge gaps. This is clearly one of the times to outsource to someone smarter than me. Our current KTM 105's are making 33hp (Dyno Proven) on VP race fuel and a modified HGS pipe. Stock internals. It is all port and exhaust work. Feel free to grind away and fab up an exhaust and tell me how it works out.

They run the best right before they melt a hole in the piston! Lean 'er down for that dyno chart!

Lots get over ported cylinders that are now paperweights. Then the builder says it wont run because you don't know how to jet it, bla bla bla, you're using the wrong gas, bla bla bla.

I know a guy who could never get a bike to run right at all.

He then sent the cylinder and head to a "Big Name Place" They measured it all out and called and said this thing is junk. You'd be better off with a stock jug.

I'll say this about Derek as I've had a few interactions with him.

I posed on here a couple of years ago looking for some boot recommendations. Derek posted up offering some advice and said there was a promotion going on with one of the specific boots I was looking at. Come to find out that the promotion had just ended, however he went out of his way to offer to sell me these boots at the discounted price anyway knowing that he wasn't going to make any money on them. Not only that, he hand delivered them to me at Dallas SX and had fits doing so. He was just going to bring them into the stadium for me and they wouldn't let him in so he had to bring them back to his van. Then after the race in the mess of everyone leaving, he met up with me to hand them off. Why, for what? To do all of that for no profit is much further than most people would go.

Additionally, I've had several conversations with him about bike setup and I've never spent another penny with him yet. I was looking for a new 85 for my kid earlier this year and was really interested in the TM. Derek did everything he could to get us a test ride on one before I made a purchase. Due to racing and my work schedule, we couldn't connect in the time frame I needed and I bought a different bike. Still after that he has helped me out and answered questions on the new bike. I told him I was bringing the new bike to him when it's time for a top end to let him do some tuning and I still will, soon.

Derek has gone far above and beyond in my dealings with him and has been very professional. The guy knows engines too.

Same here ; I created a thread to try to help a fast privateer and he offered good advices while he knows we are in 2 different continents. He also shared some good knowledge with many guys here, one that comes to my mind is for instance in a bearings treatment & ceramic thread. S... happens, it happens, time to get an apprentice for the non strategic work to improve the service but overall my viewpoint about him is still very positive.

After all this. I'm glad I kept my cylinder stock and just sent it to Millennium. 2.5 week turnaround.
