I see very many people aren't too happy with them this year based off what I have seen. People want more out of a bike these days and the YZ is lacking in terms of “updates”. These bikes can't complete with the husky/KTMs anymore. When will Yamaha learn that a 15 year old design is not cutting it anymore. What I don't get is why people buy these bikes new, when you can find a 06+ YZ125/250, completely rebuild it ground up, and come out at half of what a 2020 costs. Anyways, good luck Yamaha!

I've become a die hard Husky fan over the past few years , but there is nothing wrong with them YZ's at all. It really depends on what you want to do with it , and if MX is what you want to do , some mods can make the YZ's very competitive. They are a proven and solid design. Their chassis and suspension is excellent , and the motor can rip if you have some coin to invest into it. Hell , my 18' TC250 was probably the most mellow " stock " 250 I've ever ridden. I put some money into the motor , exhaust and suspension and now she freakin' rips. Just saying that the YZ's aren't much different in that aspect. Not much to change on something that in it's own right , is a pretty badass bike.

Yeah but compare it to the huskys/KTMs. The YZ, to make anywhere near what those bikes make stock will need LOADS of motor work done which a lot of the “average racers” cant afford to spend just to hang with the competition. Not saying the YZs are not awesome bikes (owned 3) but after 15 years, i say its time to redesign it. Shave some pounds, change some stuff around and add e start! No reason they shouldnt.

I bought a 2005 YZ125 from a friend a few years ago and it was at the time, my absolute favorite bike I had owned. With that being said, I just don't think I could talk myself into buying a new one when you could buy an older one and completely rebuilding it with the components that you want and still be cheaper than one off the showroom floor. They just need a complete revamp for me to even pay attention to them. I have a 2019 Husqvarna TX300 now and love this bike. I guess as long as the Blue sheep keep buying, Yamaha will never change it.

It aint that better a price point. The ktms a better value when you actually look at the components on it. Odi grips, brembo brakes, hydro clutch, aluminum throttle housing, steel braided brake lines, chain that doesnt stretch instantly like the jap bikes, better air box design, lighter, faster, longer lasting clutch, better brakes, actually updated regularly. All that for a measly few hundred over comparing retail prices vs yz.

Well.....the motor's are the easy part. You can get some good power out of a YZ. And they also have some great KYB suspension under them , which is a leg up compared to what we have with the AER stuff. It's kind of a give and take really. Also , some guy's prefer the cockpit feel of the YZ's , which is understandable. It's not all about HP really , as it's more important to feel good on your bike.....the motor stuff can come later. Just my $0.02.....

eh most average racers don't need the extra power, just better technique.

retooling costs a ton of money, and would raise the costs of the bike. you'll see them stop making them before you get a redesign i think.

A averagerider cant even ride a YZ, let alone a KTM/HUSKY/TM to its full motor potential stock, so its quite the moot point. And are people really that f'ing lazy you cant kick a 2-stroke???

It’s getting fucking rediculous, there are extremely cheap and simple upgrades Yamaha could do to these bikes to really help them out if they ever got off their asses and gave them some attention.

1. Get the damn four stroke style swing arm on these bikes for God’s sake! It would save them money since they can share parts between bikes, and all it would require is a change in the machining done post process to the extruded piece the linkage mounts to. It’s simple as hell and honestly it’s almost insulting they can’t make this simple yet extremely effective change for better handling.

2. Bring the rake angle in a bit. The four stroke swingarm helps, but these bikes still push the front end. A little bit of a steeper head angle would help out a lot, and would require very little manufacturing change.

3. Please, can we please, I beg of you, get rid of the Phillips head hardware!!! It’s 2019, holy hell man how hard is it to sub in some button head Allens in place of these?

4. This one is asking a lot, but nobody should be kicking their bikes to life in 2019, please put a starter on. I’ve given up on this ever happening unless I do it myself but I can wish.

I’m just happy they still make them. If they were to change anything, I’d like a new frame. My 04 yz250 turns better than the 08 I had previously. As for the engine, a bone stock yz250 has more than enough motor for 90% of people who will buy them. All this nonsense about needing more power is just that. Yes, I like to buy pipes, silencers, reeds etc as much as everyone else, but I’m honest enough to admit it’s just vanity! If you think you “need” more power out of your yz250 you must be winning races at a regional level. I’ll take the KYB suspension of the Yz any day over a KTM or husky, with maybe 1-2 more horses which I don’t need.

I see very many people aren't too happy with them this year based off what I have seen. People want more out of a bike these days and the YZ is lacking in terms of “updates”. Jerry Robin spank a bunch of people asses on a 30 year old CR. Dont give me this crap how these YZs can't compete. If you can't win on these YZs, you were not going to win on a Husky/KTM either. Also RC2 just went toe to toe on with against a kid on a KTM that probably weighs a good 60 pounds less. So your "YZs cant compete" argument goes out the window.

Nobody wants an 06' Craigslist special that some teenager has "rebuilt". I have bought plenty of them. You will spend another $2,00 fixing it.

$6300 for a brand new 125 is not a bad deal. 10 year old clapped out YZ on Craigslist is going to cost you $3,000 plus all the 10 years of needed repairs. Your better off to buy new and buy once, cry once.

Lol! Most of the guys bitching about the YZ not being competitive with the Husky and KTM couldn’t ride any of the 3 better than the others. I could easily jump on a KTM or Husky and turn close to the same lap times that I would on my almost 15 year old YZ250.

As far as why people would buy a new YZ instead of a KTM or even an older YZ, well you save some money vs a KTM, get better suspension right off the showroom floor vs a KTM and when comparing to a used YZ you can never beat a fresh bike! I love my 05 and plan on keeping it for as long as possible, but I wouldn’t hesitate to add a new YZ125 or 250 to my garage.

Why does everyone think the YZ is severely down on power? Pretty sure the Husky is more mellow and the KTM makes a whole 1hp more at peak? Speaking of, the KTMs peak is much sooner, so you basically decide if you prefer the mid range (and short shifting) KTM or the high revving YZ.

As far as which bike takes to engine mods better, it's probably the KTM, but Derek Harris could answer that.

If RV can be competitive on a YZ250 vs KTM 300s at straight rhythm, you can win your local C class races against anything. I know I do. Hell I've pulled 450s down plenty of starts too... A lot of guys don't like turning their throttle all the way (including my slow ass, but I make an exception for starts).

The YZ could definitely use some small frame and swingarm updates... I'll agree with that. No e-start on the MX models. Get out of here with that BS. The X models, maybe.

My exact thoughts. You can take an 06+ and completely rebuild it like the builds on youtube with every bling part possible and still come out cheaper than a new YZ that is fully stock. As much I hate to say it, I think Yamaha is trying to possibly "get rid" of the YZ. They keep updating and making awesome changes to their 4t bikes it is only a matter of time. Look at how Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki died off. They completely quit doing anything to them.

Some people don’t give a fuckk about money. They want a new bike, ride every once in a while and had a Yamaha as a kid. They buy a yz250 because they have kids and all kinds of other crap. Not everyone is hardcore moto looking to save money by buying a clapped out 10 yeAr old bike.

The Yamahas have more over rev

You seriously can’t compare a BRAND FUCKING NEW bike to a 14 year old clapper, the 06 you’re looking at on Craigslist has over 100 hours on the frame and suspension most likely

Anyone that needs e start on a two stroke is noodle legged idiot

Most of us are just as slow with the extra power and gizmos

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

Yamahas are the bees knees go fuck yourself OP

Would be interesting to know how many new YZs they're selling compared to how many 2 strokes KTM is selling.

butthurt much?

About the e start statement: Imagine yourself on the side of a slick steep ass hill....with no way to gain balance or traction enough to kickstart the bike again.

Also you CAN compare a new to a "fucking 14 year old bike". Its called ground up rebuilding it. Same shit except for half the cost. lol

Your whole comment shows your MASSIVE ego. Thanks for sharing bud.

Took ktm 15 years to catch up to the performance of a YZ250, and they are still not very far ahead.

Wonder how many they’d sell if they didn’t spend another nickel developing them, made the price $4.999’ otd, and called it an entry level race bike cash cow. Like a full size pw50. Pump em out by the thousands. Better out of the box than 99% of the people who’d buy them anyway. There’s the affordable race bike of the future, a modern day Ace 100. 😂 never happen I know but nice to dream

In Australia the yz 250 makes the top 10 sales list for mx bikes, the ktm 250 sx does not. I don't know exact numbers though

To the OP. I was in the market for a new 250 2 stroke at the end of last year. My 2010 yz 250 was great but it was in need of a full over haul, I jumped on the phone to my mechanic and asked how much for suspension, all the bearings and motor gone right through, he replied around $3,500. Now I know from previous experiences that when he gets going on something he can't stick to a budget, you get an awesome result but it stings the wallet. I know I could have done the work but between running a business, family time and actually riding I just couldn't be bothered.

So I figured that the money I could get for my bike in current condition plus the money I would put into it for a couple grand extra I would have a nice fresh bike with all brand new parts including frame and suspension.

So, which one would it be? KTM or Yamaha. I read all the reviews and broke them down into sections. The brakes on the ktm are better although with a 270mm rotor on my yz I rarely need more than 1 finger on the front brake. Chassis was better on the ktm but once I had the suspension on the yz revalved it turned much better than stock and was still stable. Motor wise the ktm is stronger off the bottom and mid but signs off where the yz pulls longer up top with only a 1hp deficit at peak. Suspension on the yz is better and at 35 my knees were swaying me that way.
Then I started talking to guys at the track, some loved their ktm/husky's, some loved everything about them except the forks. Again I talked to my mechanic and he said he would do a spring conversion which would cost me around $800.
In the end I chose the yamaha, the better suspension was enough to win me over, I picked up the yz for around $1000 less than the ktm and I'm still running stock suspension minus some clicker changes. Also my bike came with a GYTR pipe and silencer which gives a nice boost over the stock yz pipe

If you cant beat someone on a new YZ, you just cant beat them. The bike is fine for your average rider, no question about it.
