Gary, I respect the hell out of you, but this observation is way off base. How could you say to a guy that just demolished everyone in Moto1 and held his own in the Moto2 slop fest to win the overall has issues? Win the red plate in dominating fashion after the first outdoor of the year and your solid advice is to sit the rest of the year out for a mental r&r?

That type of advice isn't going to do you any favors in the business.
Yeah, your right. I went over the top when I said, should take the rest of the year off. But after that I did say, I know that ain't going to happen. What I meant here was, the best thing for Ken's personal health and his life span as a top racer!

What’s up with Ken’s, I don’t know what’s wrong, but something is wrong? I have nothing but admiration and respect for any athlete at Ken’s level, so I’m naturally interested in what might be the misery problem with his low energy issues. Ken prides himself on mental toughness, and rightfully so, but everyone has a breaking point. Ken’s not at his breaking point, not even close. However, the physical and mental stress from his first major arm injury at A2 in 2016 put him at max out stress level. Then trying his hardest to get back in top racing shape as quickly as possible continued loading stress onto an already stressful situation. Then another major arm injury number 2 came. Then he put himself through the same stressful scenario, get back to 100% racing performance ASAP. There didn’t seem to be any consideration to heal his phyche. The mind and body cannot always do what the conscious mind wants to achieve. Without time and a balance preparation routine, there will be sub-par performance, at best. I believe the word “TIME” was not considered as much as it should have been. Now, it’s beginning to show side effects. The side effects are sub-par physical and mental performance. He doesn’t even recognize where it’s coming from, but it’s there, and it’s beginning to raise its ugly head! The best think Ken could do for himself is take the rest of the year off. Do enough moderate training to maintain some of his fitness, and have fun! I know that ain’t going to happen for obvious reasons.

When I heard he was coming back to SX in 2018, I commended on a post in Vital that it was too soon bc he needed more healing time, mentally and physically. I’m looking in from the outside, so obviously, I don’t know, but that would be my guess. What do you think?
Whatever happens, I wish him well.
His arm injury was in 2017. Get the facts right

Roczen said on Pulp he still feels like crap, so Gary is right in that even though he won, he appears to have a major problem. It's possible he might hammer himself into worse shape, at the front of the pack or not. Roczen is so good in mud he probably rides at minimum energy expenditure.
Winning races doesn't solve his health problem, and Gary knows all about training your way into sickness, if you have ever watched his MX training DVDs.
Thanks for getting the meaning of my topic!

Some of you have me mixed up with someone else, as I didn't say anything about Mitch and Austin.

His mental side seems to be solid. He took the time he needed and nobody cant say he hasnt been patient. Just the fact that he came back at all is mindblowing but it took a lot of time. I dont see why anything would be wrong with his mental game? He seems confident yet humble about the fact that he will get to a championship-winning level in due time and he knows more than anyone that the fact he´s not winning is physical more than anything.

As far as the recent SX season and the issues he´s had, I dont get what you´re on about. He has been very open that he has some sort of illness that makes him weak, and the doctors seems to have figured out that it might have something to do with the antibiotics he took after lime-gate. Exactly what they should do to stop it is still not figured out but its not like he´s dying every time he´s out there. Ken, more than anyone, realizes this and goes out and does the best he can while they are working on a solution.

I cant find any signs of Ken getting stressed about it or that his mental game is screwed up because of it. He seems to realize with a calm and collected mind that this is how it is. They are doing what they can to solve it and that he will go out and do the best he can in the meantime. This weekend he even pulled his first overall so that tells you something about how strong his mental game is. He knows that he´s not 100% but can still pull out a win, thats impressive.

Also, how are you the expert on when he should´ve came back? Are you a doctor that can tell exactly whats going on in Kens arms? Are you a psychiatrist that knows what state of mind Kens brain is? Only Ken can know when he feels good enough to come back, and there´s no real reason to think he made the wrong move. He exceeded everyones expectations last year both before the new injury and the outdoor season after. He held the red plate this year and if it wasnt for lime-gate, who knows what would have happened, but that has nothing to do with him coming back "too soon".

Honestly I think its all stress induced (physical stress and mental stress) with Ken. Prior to the injuries and surgeries he was the most confident individual and had every reason to believe he could win the race on any given night. Post injury the truth is he is not that same guy, hell he even admitted it on Pulp. The human body behaves in the most bizzare ways when subject to amount of shit Ken has seen over the last couple years.

Mxracer6y, are you retarded or excelling at being Vitarded?

When you have enough knowledge, experience and skill as a pimple on Gary Semics ass, then you can come in and be a Vitard.

Even Ken has said he doesnt know what is wrong, and that he didnt find or fix anything. He just felt good this last week at Hangtown in Moto 1.

Nothing has really changed from SX, He was fast in SX for about 70% of the races, and he only missed out on winning because Cooper was on one helluva redneck roll that could not be de-railed.

The first race of the Nationals is always a tossup, throw in a few guys coming back, some overseas guys, the weather, Eli being Eli, and KR being KR. It was his day to win a moto and the overall.

I dont think anyone including KR believes his troubles are over and that he is going to roll through the Nationals.

How about this theory?

Maybe the top 3-4 riders are so very close on bikes that are also so very close, and the results will vary from week to week just because one of them feels "comfy" on the bike and the other didnt get a good nights sleep?

They are all so close, and they all are trying to win. Only one can win each week, and the many variables and moving parts from the team, the bike, training, the tracks, and the psyche of these athletes are huge factors that can effect the outcome of the race. The days of Ricky, James and Stew winning 24 straight are over.

KR, Eli, Webb and Marvin are the fastest we have over here and are trying to beat each other on equal equipment/tracks. Unless one of them starts missing podiums with 20 sec deficits, then its just called Good Racing.

Gary Semics is pointing out why KR doesnt feel 100% every time he gets out on the racetrack, thats all.

This win will help Ken a lot mentally. Yes he’s already so mentally tough but a win like this that came so easy will show him that he still has that old Ken speed (maybe not all of it) and he will continue to ride like this

I'm guessing some of the pups here don't know Gary and his credentials. It's a productive question and not fish bait.

I agree with the question and theory. It's the same question that's been discussed all Supercross season. He's had sparks of speed, but nothing consistent, in alignment with the KR we've seen in the past. Here's hoping he's building strength and stamina to get back 100%.

Losing the pro biotic in your gut changes the way food is digested and fuel is distributed. Basically trashes your bodies function so that you feel like you have the flu all the time. I have been working around it since 2008 and still have to watch my diet very closely.

When they nuke the infection with a heavy antibiotic they also nuke the good stuff.

Great guess.

They figured out the antibiotics he has been on have been killing his immune system because it killed off the good bacteria in his digestive system. It’s a common thing in people who have been sick and had extended stays in a hospital. Hard to diagnose and horrible for an athlete because they thought it was mono.

He’s on a special diet now and he is getting better.

If he's dealing with C-diff then it would explain alot and I really feel for the guy. It can really interfere with your bodies nutrient uptake. I had a family member who struggled with it for months; it's not pleasant to deal with and can take considerable time to clear up. They do have a transplant procedure now that I think can sometimes clear it up quicker but I'm not gonna explain it here.

Yup, a major win is as good as it gets. Gary raised valid points but I think the timing of his post is off.

Ken is in a good place with that Red plate.

CDiff? When you’re sliding into first and your butt starts to burst....

Man that’d be rough - that would explain why he’s being coy about it. Dude just won a National though. I think it’s all in his head, personally.

The comment may be a bit premature but I think a lot of the information is accurate. Given the situation Ken has not allowed his body to properly recover. The worst thing that can happen is he doesn't allow his body and mind to recover resulting in another injury. He was significantly faster than the rest of the field at round 1. Let's give it a few rounds and see where he is at.

If at some point he starts to drag again he could lower his expectations, reduce the training throughout the week but stay on the track each weekend to keep the gate drops coming.

Also, to the people bashing Gary. He isn't just another Vitard so don't treat him like that.

Seems to be covered at this point so I’ll raise the question... Which Vital topic is a hotter take?

Ken Roczen needs to take the year off after winning the season opener.

Or

Adam Cianciarulo should retire from racing after getting 2nd in the SX championship.

Wow Gary, some pretty off the wall observations you have concluded to. I believe Ken said last week they have found the cause of his “energy” problem and attributed it to the high amounts of antibiotics he was forced to take from his burns from the lime incident. I am sure stress is also playing a role, but I don’t see taking a year off as a logical solution. He will continue to get stronger all year, they have a plan and winning the first round was not in that plan, but it sure was nice.

That sounds very likely. We hand those things out like candy in the ER. Modern antibiotics are so powerful that they wipe out all of your good bacteria and it can cause big problems, especially for a hardcore athlete like Ken. He needs a good gut bacteria transplant. You can Google to figure out how that is accomplished.
Poo transplant!

Kenny was rather forthcoming in his interview on Pulp. He was pretty clear about the gut/antibiotics issue, but he also alluded to being in a better frame of mind. My take was he still feels he has things to work through, but that it’s pointing in a good direction right now. I think he’ll be fine. Kenny does not lack for courage and determination! ...and talent!

He needs to figure out a way to introduce good bacteria... its known to cause fatigue and lethargy... Maybe introduce probiotics twice a day or something?
He has to take Ultralevura to replace the intestinal flora.

If he has C-Diff, he and everyone around him should be wearing masks, gloves, gowns,,, the whole bit. Super contagious.

We're traveling down a rabbit hole now, but he was most likely given a ton of antibiotics throughout all of his surgeries. Maybe they gave him more after lime gate. I bet that he didn't have any kind of fever or any obvious signs of infection from those burns. But he went to a doctor, he's young and naive about the down sides of the over prescription of antibiotics. So they gave him antibiotics to cover their own asses so he doesn't end up with a very unlikely horrible infection from the burns, and now he's facing the consequences of the over-prescription of antibiotics.

Antibiotic resistance is already a very serious problem that will just get worse, I'm pretty sure that super bugs like c diff will eventually wipe out the human race. You heard it here first on vitalmx.

This looks nice. I mean, really nice. If I really had to choose, I'd say I'm more a fan of Eli. Overall, I'm a fan of the sport and I really hope the crazy German is on his way back to 100% health. That's what's good for the sport.

I did find his behavior a little odd after he took the overall. It was almost like he was doubting himself that he can do this, but his talent and training on a sub conscious level took over and he got the win. He just seems like he's down on confidence a little, hopefully that comes back as the season goes and we also see a happier Roczen.
