Is Sexton ready for this title?

So obviously still a race to go but it's looking like this title is his.

Honestly, I like Sexton but is he really ready to move up the the 450 class after next year if he wins this title?

I think AC is pretty much ready to go but Sexton is still really young and seems inexperienced. I'm afraid that winning this title this soon will hurt him in the 450's as he doesn't have to seem to have the same speed as a lot of his 250 competition. If he does win this title I'm happy for him. Just hope that doesn't hurt his career.

I don't think Sexton will let Cooper have the six figure bonus that probably comes along w/ the title. So...think Sexton will be full steam ahead in Vegas.

He won't get pushed out.

Factories put up a stink anytime a guy getting bumped doesn't fit their plans, and voila the rules are changed.

I disagree that he wouldn't be "ready" if he were forced to though.

Sexton has only been in the class two SX seasons (he did race outdoors in '17). I think he is allowed two more years, even with a Championship under his belt.

I am sure he will graciously accept the trophy because of AF's injury..... But even he can't say he was the best in his class this year........

Not this year. OP is conjecturing next year (defend the title rule), but I think that is wrong, too.

I thought the rules where changed any champion had one more year to defend?

You have to be in it to win it. I get what you mean but at the end of the day the championship signifies who was the best.

I have high confidence in Sexton's 250 title contention. It's been 39 years since we have seen a FBI title holder.(Bomber)
Good luck and Kudos to Chase.

Well, not crashing out is part of this championship. AF got lucky a couple of times already.
The history books don't care who was the fastest, or Stew would be a little further up there...

Looked it up. I am off: Three years, not four years:

"A rider who wins a Supercross Lites [250SX] Championship will be eligible to participate in the Supercross Lites class for a maximum of three years total regardless of what year he/she won the title. (i.e. if a rider wins the Championship in their third year of Supercross Lites competition, they will be ineligible for the Supercross Lites class regardless of points and therefore not eligible to defend their Supercross Lites Championship title)."

He will be able to defend. If he has the most points at the end of the season, he is ready for the title.

He seems pretty mature and doesn't make crazy on track decisions. I think he'll be more than ready after next year.

Look, it's really simple: To get kicked out you have to score 100 points or more in three consecutive seasons, unless you win a title, whereupon there's a special rule that kicks you out the second season after you win your championship. This scenario puts you in "special kickout allocation B," which is to say you are doomed to race the 450 class unless you are employed by Pro Circuit Kawasaki or KTM, and then you get kicked out but you can actually keep racing 250s anyway. All this is, of course, null and void if you ride for a privateer team, in which case you can either be kicked out of the 250 class after making the main event three weekends in a row or be given an exemption for all time, depending on your team's connections. Also, anyone solidly in the top 10 or out of the top 30 in points may be accused of having sat next to someone on the bus whose aunt's great-granddad heard about someone taking methamphetamine once, which is an instant suspension of some amount of time yet to be determined, in which case you are kicked out of the 250 class but cannot race the 450 class. After at least two but up to ten (or, hell, 15 - why not?) seasons, you may once again race, and since you didn't earn 100 points in each of three previous seasons, you can race the 250 class again.

It's really quite simple; I don't know why you guys don't get it.

So, since he will probably only have 10 250 races after Vegas, does he jump on a 450 during the opposite rounds, or focus on defending his championship?

I'd really like to see him ride another year, but for no good reason other than he seems/looks young. Either way, I'll think he'll be fine.

Article from RacerX 250 Words - Pointing out of 250SX

CHASE SEXTON
Years Exceeded: 1
Sexton is currently in his second year of supercross which means, like Forkner, he can’t be booted to a 450 regardless of what happens on the track this season. He’ll burn a year this season (he’s got 125 right now) unless he gets injured before Nashville, which will leave him with a minimum of two more years of eligibility.

Im just stoked to see Geico get a title again and i think they are going to change the point rules for lites either next year or the year after. They see that they are hurting the sport forcing guys up to 450's.

No. Winning a championship no matter how you want to twist it is a good thing

And so is moving into premiere class. This is just another indictment of our overall structure that the thought of avoiding a championship or promotion is even entertained.

I think his style will translate well to the 450 class. He seems to ride cautiously and smooth. I am rooting for him in Vegas.

I think every announcer, journalist and podcaster in the industry called the Forkner injury before it happened. He was riding way over his head and going way bigger than he needed to (especially in practice). Sexton was being criticized for not having the same speed. He kept his cool, hit his marks, stayed within striking range, and now he will reap the rewards.

He is absolutely the best in the class because he can maintain his speed within control.

This guy gets it, but you left out being able to use equipment that is not eligible for the class.

Hurting the sport?

Having guys make a career out of a regional feeder class is hurting the sport. If you can't handle moving up, get a day job.

If you can't hold it together and make it to every race, you don't deserve the title. Winning a title that spans 8 races is about being there every weekend, and being consistent. When you're clearly the fastest, and don't have the piece of mind to back it down, you're not ready to be a champion.

Looked it up. I am off: Three years, not four years:

(i.e. if a rider wins the Championship in their third year of Supercross Lites competition, they will be ineligible for the Supercross Lites class regardless of points and therefore not eligible to defend their Supercross Lites Championship title)."

Try again.

"Riders who earn at least 135 points will cross the threshold, which means they’ll burn a year of eligibility in the class. Anyone who does that four times (it doesn’t have to occur in consecutive years) will no longer be eligible to race in 250SX, effective at the completion of that season.

There are some special rules that affect 250SX champions too, but we’ll streamline those for you. If a rider wins a championship, he’s got four years max in the class. The only exception to that rule is if the championship is won in the fourth year (and the rider hasn’t pointed out four times) he’s allowed to defend his championship for one season. If you’ve exceeded the point threshold four times, and win the title in your fourth year, you still have to move up. Also, if a rider wins two championships, he’s done racing 250SX no matter what."

I copied this From the AMA/FIM 2019 rule book covering the rules about 250 points - in the link below it goes into extensive detail under section 5.2 covering eligibility for those riders who win a championship:

5.2 250SX East/West Championship Guidelines, Section D: Effective with the 2007 season points, riders earning at least 135 250SX Championship points in a nine-race season, 120 250SX Championship points in an eight-race season, or 105 250SX Championship points in a seven-race season, in four seasons of 250SX competition will be ineligible for the 250SX class.

http://www.amasupercross.com/rules/pdf/2019/2019%20AMA%20Supercross%20R…

The one thing that throws me off a little is this year is there’s 10 west coast and 9 east coast, that’s including the 3 combined rounds, so I’m thinking a rider would have to earn 150 points in a 10 race series (points go up by 15 for each additional round)

Why try again? That confirms that he falls under the three year rule, not the title defense rule
