I have a chance to buy a 2009 v twin Aprilia 450 for 9k. I'm sure I can get it for 8.5k
These bikes are super rare. Have you ever seen one at the track? Have you ever rode one?

No. They are massive piles of shit that blow up all the time, are costly to rebuild and so poorly designed you need to remove the swingarm to replace the front sprocket.

they are cheaper down here, and taht says a bit as nothing is cheaper down here,

as a mx bike they were no good, as a super motard bike they were pretty good, but as above, very unreliable and not easy to get parts for,

also the 550 is the rarer one,

My buddy and his brother both bought them (supermoto). I never rode one, but they are both moto guys and street guys and loved those bikes. Apparently there's some kind of ECU swap or ECU mod to get the European spec which is claimed to be in the 80HP range. That's nuts on a bike that light.

As a concept, this bike is awesome. If Honda made it, it would be such an awesome supermoto/dual sport/adventure machine. Unfortunately it's built by Aprilia, I'd steer clear unless you enjoy heart ache.(lots of first hand knowledge)

So what is the collectability of shitty bikes that are rare, technologically significant or historically important? I am seriously asking this.

I mean, this is high tech, high power bike from a hugely important manufacturer in the larger sport of motorcycling.

But it does (apparently) SUUUUCCCKK.

There is probably going to be a point in the near future that a crated Cannondale will fetch 10s or 20s of thousands, no matter what giant POSs those things were (or maybe because of what giant POSs those things ere)

Raced one for two seasons,, rode it as an MX bike and it wasnt great , too heavy on the front, and didnt turn. Did 2 races on it and then we set about converting it to an SM bike , 5 speed gearbox with motor changed to screamer mode bespoke ECU package and motor upgrades, lightweight wrist pins, DLC coatings and reworked crank. Fastest 450 i have ever ridden , and we had the fastest SXV 450 before that . Made 74bhp , on pump gas. Had one motor issue when a valve failed, which did zero damage.
Common reasons for motor failures were people messing with rev limit, or setting them up on the Dyno for max numbers and melting them cos they were way too lean, ( a common problem in SM where people chase numbers on a chart instead of usable horsepower, and grenade the thing in the process) whereas we had them running that rich guys who bought the ECU and map pack would run out of fuel 2 or 3 times before they sussed out what was going on... you dont get bikes to go faster by putting less fuel in, its when you put it in that matters.

Killer bike, And NOTHING sounds as good with those pipes .

Is it worth $9k... thats your call. The guys we supported in the US with SXV's with parts and info loved them but the MXV just never took off.

If you have $9k for an ornament you can ride , and you want it, why not.

I know where my old racebike is, in bits , because it blew up , after a 'genius' decided it was too rich and leaned her off .. made 4hp more while it lasted . which wasnt long.

I say buy it and put the engine into a 2018 450 frame with a blown engine.

That engine in the right chasis could be killer. Would be a ton of work though

May as well put a V8 in a CRF chassis ... not possible. Its a Steel trellis frame with cast beams. The MXV motor wouldnt go in an SXV frame.

Buy it with conditions, demand unlimited free parts and labour also push for a good med aid sceme and thats if you are a c class rider.

B class rider-same as above but you want an additional back up bike for your 8.5k

A class rider - same as above but you will now need everything for free, a huge salary, fully equipped semi with Mike Williamson as crew chief...lastly a huge bonus for finishing races.

If these negotiations fail go buy something with a happy button...kicking is so "yesterday"

interesting advice... but i kinda got lost when you mentioned Mike Williamson.

I think that Weston Peick approves that kicking is so "yesterday".

I bought a road bike from a shop that sold them back in about 2007. They were a monumental failure, the mechanic at the shop did nothing except fix them up, over and over. Rear cylinders wouldn't last a day or two. Don't know what would have happened when the warranty ran out!

I really wanted the SXV550 Supermoto version. They sounded so good and made crazy power. Neat bike. $9k would be a no for me though.

Allen Noland at Noland Trans World Cycles is the man for these machines. AF1 Racing is the dealer source.
You are on an MX forum, but these bikes are a fail for that purpose, other than collecting or novelty there is no good reason, but they are super cool. $9k is over MSRP on a 10 year leftover, if you want one to ride there are much cheaper options that are already sorted.
There is nothing better for tight road race tracks, and there is much knowledge out there on them if you dig.

Knew a dealer and rode the 450 et 550 off-road quite a few times.
Not really what I'd call efficient but not unusable either and tons of fun, especially the 550 which made my 525 feel like a novice bike...
From what I know, if properly used and maintained, they're reliable for the most part...
Probably would do a killer street legal supermoto...
Not an MX bike at all to me, though...

MXV, SXV or RXV?

The MXV is by far the rarest. A few years ago an employee at AF1 told me that brand new ones, still in the crate, could still be obtained.

The MDK Motorsports shop I was at sold Aprilia and everything Aprilia, including the scooters, were constantly coming back for warranty repairs.

That said, I did get to go to an employee demo day at the Thunder hill supermoto track with a fleet of the supermoto dual sports and they were fun as hell!

Do you have a picture? I’d love to see it. My brother is always talking about wanting one of these. He said they are badass bikes & hard to come by as you mentioned.

To answer your question, I’ve never seen one at the track or in the woods for that matter. I’d buy it!

I've always had a thing for exotic bikes. I found an MXV 450 a year or two ago for sale in the crate. I google searched it and ended up on an Aprilia forum and someone posted an Ebay link to the bike. If memory serves guy was asking only like 4 or 5 grand for it. It was cheap enough that I messaged the dude ready to buy the thing but he had a change of heart and ended up deciding to keep it.

A 2000 Husaberg FC 501 as well as a Vertemati were on my wish list also lol.

Buy it. In a few years when you take it to a meet or show, you'll be the only guy in a sea of 450 crfs with one there.

Kinda like waterfront property. They ain't making it anymore.

I rode one that was a dual sport, not sure the specific model it was. Thing was fast.

If you like exotic bikes....buy that bad boy.

Super cool concept... Needed much more development time. It seems a decent number of them were converted SM. I would love to have seen one built for AMA Flattrack or TT...

Yep. A quick search for them I found one new in crate for 6500. Still wouldn't pay that. Just got a new in the crate 07 kx250 for 2500 and the matching 125 for 1250.....Whistling
